I'm considering buying a new (Android) smartphone but unfortunately I can't afford anything high-end since I'm paying its price in full (no subscription discount).

Anyways, here are the ones I'm comparing between:

1) HTC Wildfire S (1900 EGP)

htc-wildfire-s.jpg

  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA support
  • 3.2" 256K-color TFT capacitive touchscreen of HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) resolution
  • 600MHz Snapdragon MSM7227 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU; 418MB of user-available RAM
  • Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) with HTC Sense 2.1 UI
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n with hotspot functionality
  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity; digital compass
  • 5 MP autofocus camera, LED flash, geotagging and face-detection
  • VGA video @ 24fps

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor
  • Gorilla Glass display
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Light and compact
  • Turn-to-mute, lift-to-tone-down, flip for speakerphone
  • Smart dialing
  • XviD video support
  • HTCSense.com integration
  • HTC Portable Hotspot
  • Ultra-fast boot times (if you don't remove battery)

2) Samsung Galaxy Ace (2000 EGP)
Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-s5830.jpg
  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA support
  • 3.5" 16M-color TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen of HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) resolution
  • 800MHz ARM 11 processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset; 278MB of RAM available to the user
  • Android OS v2.2 (Froyo) with TouchWiz 3.0 UI customization
  • Swype text input
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash; Geo-tagging, face and smile detection
  • QVGA@15fps video
  • microSD slot (up to 32GB, 2GB in box)

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor

Another one to consider, mainly 'coz it's pretty cheap:

3) LG Optimus One P500 (1600 EGP)

  • Android OS, v2.1 (Eclair)
  • 600 MHz ARM 11 processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset

On the other hand I found something that isn't really "Budget" but worth mentioning due its reasonable (albeit a 'lil expensive) price.

5) Motorola DEFY (2600 EGP)

gsmarena_004.jpg

  • World's first durable Android smartphone
  • Scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass screen, dustproof and water-resistant (no official certification)
  • 3.7" capacitive TFT touchscreen of WVGA (480 x 854) resolution, 16M colors
  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE, HSDPA 900/2100

  • microSD card slot (up to 16GB), 2GB card included
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and geotagging
  • VGA video @ 30fps
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (with A2DP) connectivity
  • Built-in GPS receiver, digital compass
  • microUSB port, charging enabled
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Accelerometer for UI auto-rotate
  • Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic
  • Nice social networking integration
  • Swype text input
  • Web browser with Adobe Flash Lite
  • Very good audio quality
  • Awesome web-connected music player
  • Video player has Xvid video support

The DEFY is very tempting but it's still ain't exactly cheap, I know it beats the previous 3 phones hands-down (specs-wise) but the question is, is it worth the difference (in money)?

I think the HTC Wildfire S will be faster and more responsive than the Samsung Galaxy Ace. Wait, you sure the Wildfire S is using a Snapdragon CPU? I think those are 1Ghz. Anyway doesn't matter, the Wildfire S is the better and faster phone and that's the one I would pick. It should also have better battery life. The gorilla glass is something to want as well.

both fones are good in there specs but which qualities u prefer more eg. some people want better camera and muzik and some others want the browsing and other stuff if u want a good camera and music then go for samsung but the battery life is worst but i am sure if u want to do multitasking then HTC is far better than samsung

Yeah, I think it was a typo on GMSArena, it apears to have a Qualcomm MSM7227 SoC with a 600MHz CPU and an Adreno 200 GPU.

Music and camera are secondary for me, I'm looking for performance and functionality.

Read some where HD Games don't run on HTC Wildfire S :(

Sadly, yes. the Wildfire S will not run most (if any) 3D/HD games due to its lacking CPU and screen resolution which is irritating at best but I can't afford to pay extra 1000~1500 EGP just to play better games *sighs*

Right now I'm using the Samsung Jet which is not bad hardware-wise but its software is crippled (it's not even Bada!) that's why I'm looking for an upgrade.

Edit: can anyone comment on the visibility in the sun in either phones? 'cause I HATE when I can't see a damn thing outdoors.

Motorola looks nice. It's only phone from your list that supports Flash, at least light version. It's upgradable to Android v2.2. Plenty RAM and nice CPU. I would go for this, if you can afford it.

Cheers ;)

worth mentioning Motorola Quench XT5 ^_^

Only thing it lacks is Android OS 2.1 :frusty:

I was considering it but I think the Wildfire S is better and their price is close here. Anyways, I'll add it to the list for reference :)

I have Motorola Defy, i love it, especially since they released Froyo in Europe. Very good smartphone.

I've read that there rumors that Motorola is working on a Gingerbread update for the DEFY, there even leaks out there.

Edit: Anyways, I'm still considering the DEFY but I will most likely *not* buy it since 700+ EGP is still a lot of money and I'm not sure it's worth it. So, I would appreciate it if you guys would compare the first 4 phones against each other and the DEFY just against itself (whether it is worth it or not).

Thanks for all your help.

i wouldnt trust Motorola about Gingerbread update for Defy... they said that the leaked Gingerbread was a test for a new Defy v2 phone...

Anyway... my second choice would be Samsung Galaxy Ace.

  • 1 month later...

I wouldn't recommend you buying the lg optimus, since it has a resistive touch screen!

Not according to GSMArena. In any case, I already bought a smartphone and ironically it wasn't even from the list I was discussing above :D
