Office 2010 now available on MSDN/TechNet

By Tom Warren, 18 hours ago

Microsoft has released the final build (4763.1000) of Office 2010 to MSDN and TechNet subscribers today.

Microsoft said on Friday that its new Office suite, due in May for businesses and June for consumers, had reached the released to manufacturing (RTM) milestone. The build leaked shortly after the official RTM announcement last Friday. Volume License customers with Software Assurance will be able to download the RTM bits on April 27

Microsoft is currently running an Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. Neowin revealed Microsoft's plans for the guarantee program. Customers who purchase Office 2007, or a new PC with Office 2007, and activate it between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will be offered a free upgrade to Office 2010. Copies will be available online, via download, at no additional cost.

Microsoft is holding business launch event for Office 2010 in New York on May 12. Consumers will not be able to purchase the product until June. Although Microsoft officials will not confirm the exact date, Neowin firmly believes this will be June 15. In January Microsoft announced Office 2010 pricing. The professional edition will retail for $499 boxed. Office 2010 will be released in at least five different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will include Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Professional and Professional Academic.

Thanks for the info. :)

From ZDNET:

Anyone considering an Office 2010 deployment should be testing both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. But if you’re planning to use the software in production environments for normal business use, I strongly recommend installing the 32-bit version, even on 64-bit Windows installations? There’s no real advantage to using 64-bit code unless you expect to work with very large Excel files, and there are potentially substantial compatibility headaches caused by add-ins that aren’t 64-bit aware. Microsoft agrees with me:

[T]his additional [memory] capacity is needed only by those Microsoft Excel users who require Excel spreadsheets that are larger than 2 gigabytes (GB). The 32-bit version of Office 2010 provides the same functionality and is also compatible with 32-bit add-ins. Therefore, the 32-bit version of Office 2010 is installed by default.

Office 2010 also provides support for 32-bit Office 2010 applications that run on 64-bit Windows operating systems. Office 2010 lets users continue to use existing Microsoft ActiveX Controls, Component Object Model (COM) add-ins, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which are primarily 32-bit because no 64-bit versions are available yet for many add-ins. Supporting 32-bit Office 2010 applications that run on 64-bit operating systems allows for better compatibility with controls, add-ins, and VBA.

hi Jalaffa, can you tell us if the hashes of the files on Technet match the leaked versions?

Edit: Maybe it's better to reply in the Office 2010 thread? :P

I have not bothered comparing with previous leaked ones. One peculiar thing noticed is that they come as executable installers. That's unusual.

Edit:

Come to think of it. I have not seen a Professional Plus Edition of Office 2010 earlier...

Ah, I think only the VLK version of Office 2010 RTM was released which is different to the Professional Plus Edition. I guess we'll have to wait and see if Microsoft will put this VLK version on Technet or when it goes to VLK corporate customers, I think that's in May but not sure...

Edit: Executive installers!? Yeah that's strange it's usually an ISO image I think. :s

Those installers aren't the same as the leaked ISO, they extract the install files to temp folder (much slower than running off ISO or extracted folder), though they install the same office and should be the same build (RTM).

Some earlier builds came in this format, if you want the installer files and not a EXE that dumps to temp, run it, let it extract and setup open, then use task manager to go to setup.exe location.

You should recognize the layout of the files if you've ever clicked the exe manually or looked in the ISO. Copy all files/folders where setup.exe is to another folder, and optionally add all of them to an ISO.

I did this for the RC, as I got it in EXE form.

These EXE will not match any past leaked build hashes as those were all ISO format.

If you find a direct single link to the exe, then that's probably one of the fastest ways to DL Office 2010, if you haven't already got it yet, but you'll want to do what I said so it doesn't take 20 minutes just to see the setup screen.

It sure took a long time to have it installed using those installers :D

In the long run, its better to have the ISO/extracted ISO, but its the exact thing if you do the process I mentioned, but you wouldn't ever have to do that if you DL'd the ISO to begin with.

I've seem ISO's floating around that just include a suite or app, so if the only thing you want is Pro Plus, you could get that. The best solution for anyone who wants Pro Plus, Visio, and Project is to get my release, as if you DL their ISO's separately you DL lots of the same files in the ISO, as the only thing in Visio/Project that isn't in Pro Plus it the *.WW folder and *.en-us folder for Visio/Project.

Apps don't match the 14.0.4763.1000, this is normal, build 14.0.4763.1000 has Word at that version.

@DKT27: Thanks for that article from ZDNET. :)

You are the first one to notice it.

Jokes apart, this makes me feel that I may well go for installing Office 2010 x32 on my PC. What do you say?

I am living without Office on my PC from more than 1 month now. Haven't installed older Office as I'm waiting for this one. ^_^

You're right, I was the first one to mention your ZDNET post.

Before reading your ZDNET post, I was thinking of installing the x64 version on my PC, but I wasn't sure. But reading your ZDNET article convinced me to install Office 2010 x32 on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC. The ZDNET article pointed to Microsoft TechNet that concluded:

The recommendations for which edition of Office 2010 to install are as follows:

* If users in your organization depend on existing extensions to Office, such as ActiveX controls, third-party add-ins, in-house solutions built on previous versions of Office, or 32-bit versions of programs that interface directly with Office, we recommend that you install 32-bit Office 2010 (the default installation) on computers that are running both 32-bit and 64-bit supported Windows operating systems.

* If some users in your organization are Excel expert users who work with Excel spreadsheets that are larger than 2 gigabytes (GB), they can install the 64-bit edition of Office 2010. In addition, if you have in-house solution developers, we recommend that those developers have access to the 64-bit edition of Office 2010 so that they can test and update your in-house solutions on the 64-bit edition of Office 2010.

I don't have any Excel spreadsheets anywhere near 2 GB.

I'm just a bit concerned that a few people here said on the weekend that Office 2010 is very slow opening files. :fear:

Alix90 said that Ravi's patch worked great on Office 2010 RTM.

I know but I want the confirmation for the final. I'll start downloading anyway. :)

Can anyone confirm that the build from jalaffa's link is the final build? It shows build 14.0.4730.1010.

Also, can anyone help me install this one? It requires a license to go through. :P
