Here is a list of of free security tools available to download from the internet. Keeping your data and system secure is an important part of your surfing experience, however it shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg! So we have compiled a list of some popular freeware security tools.

A general rule is to use an Anti-Virus, Firewall and an Anti-Trojan/ Spyware tool. You may however feel the need for something like a HIPS tool or one of the analysis tools. Its important to test all applications to see which suits YOUR needs the best. The best application for me may not be the best for you. This isn't a full list, however is a list of some of the best freeware security tools around.

Updated/ Fixed.

Its something i wrote earlier that i've updated.

Do let me know if i've missed stuff. I'm thinking of adding a "backup" and "updater" section too, what do you reckon?

Sure, it would be very useful. There's something I would like to see being added but I don't quite remember it right now. :frusty:

Either way i've added sections on backup, cleaners/ erasers and safe browsing. Added a few more tools to the Other Tools section too.

Still thinking about what else to add elsewhere.

I'm not sure that would fit into a security list.

I'm thinking of doing one for "System Tools" aswell. Additionally also a "Freeware Alternatives" for some other common tools.

well yes ,,not exactly into system security ,

but these might fall into personal security/safety category .

the topics header is a broad one " A list of Free Security Tools " .

so thought of, such free tools might just be included in the list , as it enables the user to safely and securely generate and safely and securely store personal info .

( and on a second note , i think people should be made aware of such tools more so ....)

what say ?

I only know of one tool: KeePass. I've never used or tested it.

I'll need to take some advice on this section.

On a side note, maybe i should add a link to the built in windows security tools?

hmm... if not putting under security tools , expanding the topic , and adding a category "Freeware Applications" , u can add many sub categories under it ,,, say --password managers , image editors , converters , and so on ..... :dance2:

it would make the list more lucid and comprehensive !

yes , why not add a link to enlighten the OS's default security applications . many might not be knowing of it .. bring to notice, ... ( ...on second note , i dont know how much any one does trust the windows security tools ...:P ,,, i got no opinions on these ... )

and do try the Roboform or LastPass.( was using KeePass before , but these two are way better ...)

u ll love it .generating passwords and remembering them and logging in is way easier with these .

not to mention , syncing , and accessing ur data from any where u want ...

;)

Great list. I wish you add process explorer since it's a great tool once virus deactivated your task manager.

We should add a "Online Malware Analyser" section.

Things like Virus Total, Jotti, Threatexpert etc.....

OK. No problem. I'll try if I can get some more useful programs listed. :)

I don't know if it sits in this, but BlueScreenView has been extremely helpful to me.

Free software it's same as good as any other payed application.

Examples: Tor, Unlocker, Hostman, CCleaner, UltraDefrag, SpyBot, Comodo Firewall, etc. Just to name a few, a good alternative to avoid keygens, cracks, patch, that can put your systems at risk if you don't downloaded from a safe site like this and others. And in some cases the money they ask for the soft it's not worthy.

Rescue Disks should be a option to put, of course this are ultimate alternatives in cases of infections. I would say USB security, but all of you will say AV's have full control, but for me I use USB Disk Security, and what that does, immediately stop and find the malware, and the autoruns. Can also fix registry problems caused by the malware, It's like to have a firewall for USB. Very nice tool to have, exist others like MX One, firewalls that I can't remember the name right now.
