Angry YouTube-dl users flood GitHub with new repos after takedown

Users of the extremely popular YouTube-dl YouTube media downloader have flooded GitHub with new repositories containing the tool's source code after GitHub took down the project's repositories on Friday.

YouTube-dl is a command-line program that can be used to download multimedia content from YouTube and several other sites; before being removed, it used GitHub to host source code and compiled executables.

The utility is also used by journalists for various reporting tasks including downloading press releases, videos, and audio transcriptions.

On October 23, 2020, GitHub took down YouTube-dl's repositories due to a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) infringement notice filed by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), an organization that represents the recording industry in the U.S.

Before being removed, YouTube-dl's repo was in the top 40 most starred GitHub repositories with more than 72,000 stars, between Node.js and Kubernetes.

RIAA meet the Streisand effect

When trying to visit the original YouTube-dl GitHub repo or any of the other more than a dozen forks that were removed, you will see a message stating that the "Repository unavailable due to DMCA takedown."

"We have disabled public access to the repository. The notice has been publicly posted," the DMCA takedown notice also reads.

While almost everyone was expecting blowback from YouTube-dl's angered users due to the Streisand effect, the number of new repos that showed up on the version control platform has surpassed most people's expectations.

By targeting the project, the RIAA inadvertently exposed the project to a huge amount of new people given that YouTube-dl users and fans took to social media platforms and shared the story with tens of millions of other people.

As shown when doing a quick search for YouTube-dl, GitHub now hosts hundreds of new repositories containing the source code of the YouTube downloader or related to it (when using no search filters, thousands of such repos show up).

GitHub repo now also hosting YouTube-dl's source code

Besides the huge number of new YouTube-dl repos that popped up since October 23, a copy of YouTube-dl's source code was also added to an official GitHub repository used for hosting received DMCA takedown notices.

The user who committed the source code used a bug allowing anyone to attach commits to repos they don't control.

According to security engineer Lance R. Vick, this is a known issue previously reported to GitHub that the company's security team chose to ignore.

The problem with YouTube-dl's takedown is that it sets a dangerous precedent when it comes to removing other repositories of software that isn't violating copyright.

Ricardo Garcia, the original creator of YouTube-dl and a former project maintainer (between 2006 and 2011), now part of the ytdl-org group that managed the GitHub repo, told BleepingComputer that he didn't receive any legal threats prior to the takedown.

"I don't have a general statement on the current situation other than a personal opinion that it is indeed unfortunate that the repository is currently blocked," Garcia said.

"Other people have also expressed this idea much more eloquently than I ever could. See for example the following article by the Freedom of the Press Foundation: https://freedom.press/news/riaa-github-youtube-dl-journalist-tool/."

I switched over to using youtube-dlc  they took it down  and he just removed  the infringing  code and   made a new repo   with it.  Hes done done 2 updates since this happen.  I  get my youtube-dlc updates for Tartube from Python .  Only XDM  i  get youtube-dlc from github  and since it's browser  based  it dont need updates as much api changes  that need to be fixed in regex  dont effect it  very often. I was looking at bug reports  for things that was broke for along time in youtube-dl  that youtube-dlc inherated  still works fine in my browser using it in XDM  .  youtube-dl was almost dead anyway there repo  was full of  reports of broken sites they never fixed  that why blacjack made the fork of it. Its most likely dead for real now. Making repos  with no fixes  does no one any good you can still  get  the last update of dl youtube-dl from there homepage even.

If angry users are serious about anything, they need to protest to Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), an organization that represents the recording industry in the U.S.

Github only follows the rules. they receive a DMCA notice, they take it down. just like Google does with YouTube videos.

so angry users = dumb users.

This is wonderful.

It shows that common people by coming together can take on viscous money hungry enterprises.

which enterprise? they are confused people.

the enterprise that is the main culprit is Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), an organization that represents the recording industry in the U.S.

Microsoft  belongs to the RIAA  so basically taking it out on GitHub or complaining about M$  actions  is complaining  to a member of the RIAA

Asking Microsoft to resign from the RIAA over youtube-dl takedown demand

Link  with info about them  them paying the Music Industry off out of Court when they made Zune  they gave them a cut of every copy they sold  back in 2006  so they been in good with them at lest that far back.

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20061108/235014.shtml

But the fact is there nothing you can do to help YouTube-DL  until the maintainers of it decide a course of action if they take none  its gone, only forks will remain,  but  maintainers of other opensource projects  can leave the Microsoft owned site for a better  host  and save there project before they get banned  without notice  for some BS excuse that abuses  DMCA out of protest. Just like many left when Microsoft bought it out of protest.

The Law really dont mean jack  in the virtual realm if the RIAA  abuses DMCA like  they did here  for just a take down and dont take the accused to court . Without a judge deciding if YouTube-DL is illegal  or not there free  to keep making  it. The RIAA job is to  make sure laws in the music industry get enforced by using channels  such  as the courts  like they done with other programs like Napster . They have no power outside of the courts to enforce any plenty  on software. Only they can issue them a cease and desist order  that if they dont stop they will take them to court or they can just take them to court. It's  the same with other iffy software and other Anti Piracy groups  they can make threats and get some to quit but if they  dont sue them  and it's  not deemed Illegal that dont stop someone else  from picking it up.

That just like when they sued Limewire , only Limewire  was made illegal  but the Gnutella network  was not  others like Wireshare ,  Shareaza  and others open sourced it  but they dont use GitHub  they use Sourceforge instead.  They don't always win ether  that's like when they sued  Adblock Plus in Germany  it was deemed legal  .Also  downloading things for personal use  is fair use in some places. And Big tech's Toss is not really legally binding outside the USA   they just make people in the EU opt in so they want be sued  under EU law.

Microsoft want to post PR about how they a open platform well here is there chance to earn opensource developers  trust or they can lose what little they have  it's there  choice  . Every action  causes a reaction.

Employees of Microsoft will  never speak up  because labor laws in the USA  wont protect them. In cases were they  have they ended  up losing there job  to shut them up . They will just make up some reason to let them go. It's a known fact that troublemakers are the 1st  jobs to go in the USA  Work Force unless they have a Union  to protect them.  So they have no choice  but to be fake and act like everything is great or get  laid-off or fired.

Freedom of speech don't really apply  in private  industry  if there against it. So that why some in goverment want to take away there protections to be protected from what people say or do on there platforms because they don't give everyone equal  rights to free speech there  biased  against groups who dont fit there agenda.

I am talking about the Music Industry only. GitHub didn't take it down on its own.

That statement on its face is not true.  Unions don't protect troublemakers as I found out from personal experience when I was younger.  Unions are why all our manufacturing jobs moved overseas.  They couldn't even protect their members jobs who didn't cause trouble.

Corruption in government, corrupt president, corrupt private sector and the unions destroyed manufacturing.?

When the banks nearly collapsed the world economy. who went the jail?...........who was allowed to keep his personal fortune after collapsing his bank?

Why does government bail out  the banks, car manufacturing and the list goes on,  when did we start rewarding business for their failures?, ah yes it was the unions!!

How many unionists have gone to jail?, ask the working poor who destroyed manufacturing?

The Decline of unions has seen the decline in wages around the world, biggest group of workers are blue collar, constantly being screwed

The smear campaign against the unions has been a great success, union membership is has been  on the decline for years, membership is at a all time low, yet unions are destroying us?

The only people slagging of unions are the people making  money.........greed has become a currency around the world

Who made the decision to send manufacturing to china, guess it was factory workers..............lol or the unions!

At the end of the day nothing changes, if you work for government or private sector you all went to the same colleges or university's and you all think alike

Bring back National service for 2 years!! for everyone...............to radical?............:)

All  the manufacturing   jobs  that didn't even have  a union went overseas were i live so that didn't have nothing to do  with it. It was the Governments fault  for signing  free trade agreements  i live in a non union  area  that use to have lots of manufacturing   jobs . So your  just being  delusional again . Unions had fudge all to do with it  and the trade war has not brought one single job back here  because they  waited  like 20 years too late to have one . A Govt IT shill  as yourself  dont know nothing about manufacturing . I was  working in the plants around here when they closed that's the difference in someone talking about it  like you who don't  know shit about it and someone  who experienced it  myself  1st hand.

A Union cant protect you if  your employer are  against Unions and  the workers get one in and they close the plant down  , but many  jobs have had unions  for a 100 years and these places pay good money but  not being in a Union you  have no workers rights and they  pay you what ever they want  as long as it minimum  wage or above  plus they   closed those plants down and moved them overseas because they only have to pay there workers $1 a hour in Asia  . Plants have ways  to get around Unions  they just hire non union contractors to do  the work .  Being the  greedy slime balls most  CEOS are they  will just pimp your job out underbid them to contractors . But still that dont matter  to them if you make $30 dollars  a hour or $10 dollars a hour when they can replace your job with someone who makes $1 a hour. Because there greedy slime balls no one made billions of dollars for there company being a nice guy.

If your not good at being a slime ball  they will replace you with someone who is. The reason Bill Gates  step down was because of Antitrust he step down in the middle  of it. That most likely the only thing that saved Microsoft  . But  the idiot they replaced him with is now replaced with someone who very good at being a slime ball .

Well  in my area in manufacturing they really didn't  have  CEOS  you could never  get that high up because we had presidents and vice presidents that ran it . You had to be family or marry into the family and inherit it. All  the big shots were  there family  as high you could go up was plant manger the rest of the higher up jobs were inherited . They kept the poor (poor  while they got rich  off the poor for like a 100 years 20th Century slavery .   and they still doing it but now its just done in China 21st Century slavery were they make 10 times more.  Land of the free my :moon: .  Its more like the land of the Free half the time  as long as you was not at work, then you was so tired from slave labor all you could do is sleep unless you are rich.

If your  working for some place were you have  no rights  to freedom  of speech  or what ever there against  that   is a constitutional  right  and you make  good money your just  a higher paid slave  is all  what the slaves  use to call a Uncle Tom a person who sucks up to there master  so they can live better. Just replace master  with boss and there you have it.

I moved away before and I worked  for non union contractors in logistics we was contracting  for a giant Chemical Company  that had plants  all over the USA that had a Union.  But you saying that why jobs went overseas that not true at all if you was in a Union you was lucky but once you retired (And they would pay you off to retire early) they most likely never hired no one permanent to do your job they replace you with contract workers .  Jobs are not coming back they renewed one of the Trade Agreements with Mexico  and Canada  and  Plants can git around the Trade War with China  by just simply moving to other places in Asia.  They  no IT jobs around here if you want  a good job you ether work in medical or Law .  If you dont you will have to work in retail.  Around here it  like the pandemic really never came because it was already messed up . Maybe  working at home will open some of those jobs up to my area.

Other people already knew  this that's  how  i can tell you dont know  nothing about lost jobs,  manufacturing and unions, Your a old man a Baby Boomer   and im no spring chicken I'm Generation X  but when you was young they was plenty  of manufacturing jobs your way older than me  and when i was young they was jobs. Its normal  to Generation Y  they dont even realize what's going on. Soon my Generation is going take your place and were going have to fix this mess you boomers made. Why is it they only elect mostly old farts in office ?

Edit: see here  Someone that work  for Netflix  tells you the same thing i said

Hes right most  social media  platforms  are ran as a dictatorship they have so much money there more powerful than governments because there unregulated   and  they have laws to protect them from what people do or say on there platforms  if there  going kick people off there platforms for saying crazy stuff  they should have no protection. But as long as it fits there agenda even if it's a federal  crime  they allow people to post it.  Everything is else  expect  for  the internet  is regulated by the FCC  already so why should these   dictatorship sites get a break?

There is so much hypocrisy in  mainstream social media circles right now   it stinks . Its OK for people who fits there agenda to break the law on there platforms because there protected  from being sued .But  it not OK  for  people who they dislike to even have freedom of speech that  is a constitutional  right. No wonder  Twitter  are not getting any new members  and Facebook  membership is on the decline in North America . The rest of the world may start waking up one day.

Those people they kick off are still being heard  if they  kick sites off people leave  social  media  that don't fit there agenda and go to right to the source  and join freedom of speech boards and post there news  there. So mainstream social media are causing a divide they never cared before 2017  what people said  so now people are leaving there  just shooting themselves in the foot by kicking off sites that been in print since 1801.  GitHub is  a good site  but it's not the people who run it that make  it a good site,  its the people who use it that do. If they go somewhere else  i will follow.  But compared to other  Big Tech outfits Microsoft look like a saint .:lmao:
