now cant update windows as run out of space on the 32gb part.
i have imaged across the 32 drive to the 120gb drive, can you make it boot from the 120gb drive or not? i cant find that option in bios.

You can boot from the 120 GB SSD but may have some loss in speed as the 32GB M2 drive is faster.  I have two older laptops that I wiped Windows on and installed Linux Mint with Cinnamon Desktop and they work great.  If you want to want install Windows, this is how you do it!

That's not entirely correct. M.2 is just a form factor and unless it uses/supports NVMe protocol the speed is just the same as regular SATA SSD.

ok found the answer, not easy as dont want to reinstall windows.

so did this https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/change-default-boot-drive-after-cloning-system/a5296065-8a24-4787-ab9c-c1f84fd0ce16

"change the default apps save location to D in Settings > System > Storage link."

now it is all working ok, windows updates ok and plenty of space now

thanks.

A 2.5 inch SATA SSD is as fast as a M.2 SATA conterpart SSD like the Samsung 860 EVO.

2.5 inch and M.2 is just the form factor (package) and has nothing to do with speed or protocols.

A PCI-E M.2 SSD is on paper and in benchmarks faster then a SATA 600 SSD, but for booting Windows and application/games, it doesn't matter a thing.

What I would do is using HDclone to make a clone on the 120 GB SSD and when done, just change the boot drive in the BIOS from the 32 GB SSD to the 120 GB.

That would work.

I am glad you found a solution to your problem.

I have cloned many disks in the past and there is no setting in the BIOS to set the boot drive.  You can boot from a disk or a partition on a hard drive.  The hard drive partition labelled C must be set to active to be bootable.  You can change the partition status using the disk administrator tool or the diskpart command.  This works only for older systems with disks formatted using MBR.  I do not believe that it will be possible on newer GPT disks using UEFI, you would need to reinstall windows.

Here is some info for you to read:
