K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of components needed for audio and video playback in DirectShow players such as Windows Media Player, Media Center, and Media Player Classic. It contains everything you need to play all common audio and video file formats. It also provides additional functionality such a thumbnail generation in Explorer. The pack has a very advanced installer which is highly flexible and has unique problem solving capabilities.

For those interested, here's the changelog of the version 15.4.0:

• Updated MPC-HC to version 1.9.1.34
• Updated LAV Filters to version 0.74.1-32-g6d7c4
• Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.4.2.1166

As this version is a major update, you can safely install on top of previous version. The installer will detect when it is necessary to uninstall the older version first, and it will offer to do it automatically. This is usually only needed when there have been some big changes, such as added or removed components. In most cases the existing version can be upgraded directly and all your settings are preserved.
