The face of Satan was pictured grinning over the devastation in Australia caused by out-of-control wildfires eating up the land. The image shows a colossal cloud of smoke in an angry red sky with at least three infernos rising up out of woodland, having been snapped by farmer Craig Calvert. Mr Calvert, who posted the horror pictures of the face on Twitter, spent up to 13 hours attempting to save his land in East Gippsand, regional Victoria.

He told Australia’s Sunrise programme there were 100 metre fireballs and “white fire” raining down on them as they battled against Mother Nature.

Mr Calvert said: “I’m not really into hokey pokey spooky stuff but there’s a big devil face right in the fire.”

Mr Calvert addressed Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and demanded he “step up and get behind us, don’t let any more people die”.

Mr Morrison has ben criticised over a lack of action by those affected by the fires and for jetting off to Hawaii while Australia burned in the flames and during temperatures of 40C.

The temperature in Australia is set to hit 46C this weekend.

The fires began weeks ago, with many Australians expressing outrage that Sydney hosted their spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display while the nation burned in the inferno.

Only yesterday, when the death toll was 18, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews declared a state of disaster for areas affected by bushfires.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced that the state of emergency will begin 08.00 this morning (21:00 GMT Thursday) and last for seven days.

She said: “Given forecast weather conditions on Saturday & the unpredictable nature of current firefront’s, a State of Emergency has been declared for seven days commencing tomorrow morning.

“Please take the advice of our Emergency Services Personnel to stay safe.”

Tens of thousands of people living in homes enveloped by miles of flames have been warned by fire chiefs to escape certain areas of New South Wales as they battle the horror inferno in unbearable temperatures of 46C.

Tourists were also today warned to stay away from the coast south of Sydney by officials who said: “Do not be in this area on Saturday.”

Transport minister Andrew Constance said the situation was the “largest mass relocation of people out of the region that we’ve ever seen”.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corp, he added: “We are going to face a worse day on Saturday than what we have been through.”

NSW Rural Fire Service deputy commissioner Rob Rogers added: “There is every potential that the conditions on Saturday will be as bad or worse than we saw on Tuesday.”

Australia is still battling a rash of wildfires at the opening of 2020, as severe heat grips much of the country.

Officials have enlisted military aid to tackle the scores of blazes, and people have had to evacuate.

The fires are scattered around Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, with Tasmania also badly affected.

Shocking images show abandoned cars that have melted into the roads and badly burned koalas and kangaroos.

Many animals have died in the fires and others have been put to sleep, unable to recover from burns or smoke inhalation. More than 900 homes have now been destroyed by the oncoming flames in New South Wales alone.
