K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of components needed for audio and video playback in DirectShow players such as Windows Media Player, Media Center, and Media Player Classic. It contains everything you need to play all common audio and video file formats. It also provides additional functionality such a thumbnail generation in Explorer. The pack has a very advanced installer which is highly flexible and has unique problem solving capabilities.

Thanks to Astron for the update.

Changelog Of K-Lite Codec Pack 15.2.6:

  • Updated MPC-HC to version 1.8.8.22
  • Updated LAV Filters to version 0.74.1-30-gf768e
  • Updated Codec Tweak Tool to version 6.4.4
  • MPC-HC now has an option to enable a dark interface: MPC-HC menu > View > Dark theme

As this version is a major update, you can safely install on top of previous version. The installer will detect when it is necessary to uninstall the older version first, and it will offer to do it automatically. This is usually only needed when there have been some big changes, such as added or removed components. In most cases the existing version can be upgraded directly and all your settings are preserved.

K-Lite Codec Pack 15.2.6 installers:

Basic | Standard | Full | Mega

From the k-lite codec page:

"We highly recommend to use the (default) LAV decoders, as those give the best performance, quality, stability and compatibility. The alternative decoders do NOT allow you to play more files!"

In other words, the LAV filters are enough and very fine, no need to install any additional pack on top.

The alternative decoders do NOT allow you to play more files, that was correct. However, you forgot another point as well. They mentioned that these alternative decoders are only useful in specific circumstances (for example, Screen Monkey requires FFdshow filter to be enabled, even though LAV filter was activated as the default filter).

K-Lite was formerly used FFdshow filters as default for older versions, before opted for LAV filter instead as default filter for new versions while retaining FFdshow filter (which can be enabled manually through Codec Tweak Tool, for Mega versions of KCP).

p/s: The additional alternative decoders are only available in Mega version of KCP.

The alternative decoders...

To install codec packs might be an easy solution in case of problems playing audio/video files, but it's not the only way to solve problems.

Standalone players like the famous mpc-hc or smplayer come with their own sets of internal codecs, they don't require any additional codec pack.

Years ago I did follow the way of codec packs, it did broke my audio/video experience, playing audio/video files became a mess. Now the only used filters are the LAV ones, nothing additional, all is playing fine. Not being an expert I can only repeat k-lite advice: LAV decoders give the best performance, quality, stability and compatibility.

Some systems might require additional filters, most do not; it's about selecting the good ones not blindly adding more of them.

Just another point of view so that forumers can realize that packs are not the ultimate solution 😉

That's is why I wrote that in the first place. Like you, I'm aware that LAV filters/decoders are more stable and reliable, which why K-Lite putting it default.

For normal and noob users can opt for Standard version of KCP, which does not contain any additional decoders. Installing that pack is quite simple as it adjusts to the user's current system configuration.

Experienced users can opt for Mega version of KCP, which contains additional decoders that has to be manually activated (for apps that require additional decoders.
