New Arch Linux-Based Endeavour OS Launches To Keep Spirit Of Antergos Alive

When the Antergos Linux project closed up shop, the community that blossomed around it decided it wasn't going anywhere. Within weeks, an idea was hatched to keep the spirit of Antergos alive by designing a new Arch-based distribution that was easy to install, with a helpful and friendly community to support newcomers. That's when Bryan Poerwoatmodjo, Johannes Kamprad and Fernando Maroto started working on Endeavour OS which sees its first stable release launching this week.

 

 

The distro's Welcome page certainly puts its best foot forward, proclaiming that "Stupid questions simply don’t exist in the community, we’re happy to guide you through your system and the terminal commands from beginning to end in a friendly manner."

 

Endeavour OS uses the familiar Calamares installer to automate the normally complex and command line-based Arch installation process. I gave it a quick spin inside a Virtual Machine and it couldn't be simpler, although the team does warn of some early issues with manual partitioning. Give that a read before you proceed!

 

 

In the very near future Endeavour OS will also offer an online installer, letting the user choose between 10 Desktop Environments: Base, i3-wm, Openbox, Mate, Xfce, Cinnamon, Gnome, Deepin, Budgie and KDE.

 

What you end up with (for now, using the offline installer) is a lightly-themed Xfce Desktop Environment and some subtle encouragement to use Arch's pacman for your package management needs. No graphical package manager is included by default.

 

"Running Endeavour OS has a learning curve, but it’s not as steep as you might think, especially with the help from the large knowledge base our friendly community has," writes the team on the Endeavour OS Info page. "Just ask and don’t be afraid of making mistakes, we’re here to help you run and understand the endless possibilities an Arch-based system has."
