The upcoming Windows 10 April 2019 Update, also known as version 1903 or 19H1, will come with a new Windows Update policy that will let admins “specify deadlines for automatic updates and restarts.”

Available in the Group Policy Editor, the policy is supposed to do exactly what its name suggests: configure a target date for installing updates on a Windows 10 device and then the grace period of reboots.

Updating a Windows system continues to be a critical thing for everyone, and Microsoft wants to give IT admins more control with this new policy, especially when managing larger fleets of devices.Update coming next monthThe policy is located at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update and requires admins to set separate deadlines for installing quality and feature updates. The grace period of the reboot also needs to be provided.

“This policy lets you specify the number of days that a user has before quality and feature updates are installed on their devices automatically, and a grace period after which required restarts occur automatically.  Updates and restarts will occur regardless of active hours, and the user will not be able to reschedule,” the description of the policy reads.

The deadlines that admins can set for installing updates can go as high as 30 days, while the auto-reboot can be anywhere between 0 to 7 days.

Windows 10 April 2019 Update will also come with a new option for the Home SKU, as users would be allowed to pause updates for a maximum of 35 days after installing the new version of the OS. This feature was previously available for the Pro version and higher.

Windows 10 version 1903 is projected to be finalized as soon as this month, while the public rollout to devices across the world will begin in April.
