Microsoft Says Some Devices Still Blocked from Getting Windows 10 Version 1809 

Microsoft has updated the Windows 10 update history page with new information on the current status of bugs discovered in the October 2018 update.

And one particular issue that’s being mentioned is the one experienced on select Intel devices that were previously blocked from getting Windows 10 version 1809 due to bugs in official drivers.

Microsoft explains that while new drivers resolving the glitch are already available for users, it takes more time for OEMs to ship them via Windows Update, so until then, it’s better for these devices not to install the October update. Therefore, the upgrade block is still in place on Windows 10 version 1809, Windows 10 Server 2019, and Windows Server version 1809.

“Microsoft has identified issues with certain new Intel display drivers. Intel inadvertently released versions of its display driver (versions 24.20.100.6344, 24.20.100.6345) to OEMs that accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows,” Microsoft explains on the page – the same message was posted in late 2018 as well when the company acknowledged the bug.No ETA available just yetDevices that upgrade to Windows 10 version 1809 and run the faulty drivers may experience audio playback issues, the company also explained.

“Intel has released updated drivers to OEM device manufacturers. OEMs need to make the updated driver available via Windows Update,” Microsoft says.

The advisory hasn’t changed from the previous update, but the March 15 post confirms that the upgrade block is still active and devices with the bad Intel drivers can’t install Windows 10 version 1809.

One easy workaround is to manually remove the faulty drivers and download the new version from Intel’s page, though this is obviously something that only power users can do. No ETA has been provided as to when the upgrade block could be lifted for all devices.
