Apple Watch Makes Apple the King of Wearables

New data provided by IDC for the fourth quarter of 2018 shows that sales improved by no less than 31.4% worldwide, reaching a record of 59.3 million units.

New data provided by IDC for the fourth quarter of 2018 shows that sales improved by no less than 31.4% worldwide, reaching a record of 59.3 million units.

Out of these shipments, smartwatches accounted for 34.3%, while wrist bands improved to 30%. Earn-worn devices like the AirPods secured 21.9% of the market, according to IDC.

When it comes to Apple alone, the Cupertino-based tech giant is clearly the undisputed leader of the wearable market with more than double the shipments of the runner-up.

Apple has thus remained number one during the quarter with total sales of 16.2 million units and a market share of 27.4%. This is up from 13.3 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2017 and a 29.6% share.

Second-placed Xiaomi is far behind with just 7.5 million units sold in Q4 2018 and 12.6% market share, followed by Huawei and Fitbit with 5.7 million and 5.5 million units, respectively.Apple Watch sales going upOverall, Apple topped the charts in 2018 with total sales of 46.2 million units, up from 33.1 million units the year before. Xiaomi is again the runner-up with 23.3 million units, while Fitbit is third with 13.8 million units.

Last year, Huawei posted the biggest growth, as its sales jumped no less than 147.3%, followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, and Apple with 85.1%, 44.6%, and 39.5%, respectively.

“The Series 4 has been off to a very strong start and IDC anticipates this to continue as more healthcare organizations and consumers adopt the latest device. The remainder of Apple's shipments were comprised of AirPods and Beats headphones in the ear-worn category,” IDC says.

While the Apple Watch itself is growing bigger, IDC notes that Xiaomi is also improving all over the world, and its wearable portfolio benefits from increasing demand.

“Xiaomi's Mi Band 3 alone accounted for over 30% of all wrist bands shipped during the quarter,” IDC notes.
