WINDOWS 10 is set for two substantial upgrades this year that are expected to radically transform the Microsoft operating system. Here is a list of all the new features fans have to look forward to.

Windows 10 is the latest version of Microsoft's operating system that is harnessed by computers across the globe.

In fact, Windows 10 recently surpassed Windows 7 to become the most popular version of the software around, according to Net Marketshare.

The outlet insisted in the month of December Windows 10 had 39.33 percent of desktop market share and Windows 7 had 36.9 percent.

Windows 10 is currently running on over 700million pieces of hardware.

This year Microsoft is expected to release two sizeable updates for the operating system; one in April and the other in October.

Windows 10 was last upgraded when Microsoft released its October 2018 Update to fans.

Although the rollout of the software was stalled somewhat thanks to bugs, it since resumed and introduced a number of helpful features.

However, Microsoft is expected to up the ante further in April when the Windows 10 April 2019 Update is unveiled.

Before such an update is delivered to all Windows 10 fans, those that are part of Microsoft's Insider programme are granted early builds of the operating system to test new features.

On its Windows Blog, Microsoft posts the fresh features that are present in new Windows 10 Insider preview builds, offering a glimpse into new functions to expect from new substantial versions of the software.

the latest builds showcase a number of changes Windows 10 fans have to look forward to.

Firstly, Microsoft is making some alterations to its signature Start menu in an effort to make it more simple and accessible.

The firm stated it is introducing a new one column design and showcased images of the new menu in motion.

Discussing the forthcoming changes, Microsoft said: "We’re introducing a simplified default Start layout for new devices, new user accounts, and clean installs.

"The new layout has been simplified into a sleek one column design with reduced top-level tiles.

"Coupled with earlier changes providing the ability to uninstall additional inbox apps, and a new way to easily to unpin a folder or group of tiles, the simplified Start layout is part of an ongoing effort designed to enhance your Start experience in the upcoming release of Windows."

Windows Sandbox has also been introduced in the latest preview build of Windows 10.

Sandbox is a piece of software that is designed to run suspicious applications in an isolated environment.

This means if programmes contain malware, they will not harm your PC if they are used in Sandbox first.

Microsoft explained such a feature has been introduced to improve the longevity of devices.

The American tech giant said: "Windows Sandbox is a new lightweight desktop environment tailored for safely running applications in isolation.

"How many times have you downloaded an executable file, but were afraid to run it? Have you ever been in a situation which required a clean installation of Windows, but didn’t want to set up a virtual machine?

"At Microsoft, we regularly encounter these situations, so we developed Windows Sandbox: an isolated desktop environment where you can run untrusted software without the fear of lasting impact to your device.

"Any software installed in Windows Sandbox stays only in the sandbox and cannot affect your host. Once Windows Sandbox is closed, all the software with all of its files and state are permanently deleted."

The newest Windows 10 preview build also allows users to add symbols and kaomoji to certain hotkeys, making them easier to employ at any time.

Kaomoji are when text characters are used to make images.

Microsoft went on: "Ever tried to type an em dash, and couldn’t remember the Alt key code? Wanted to post 'flipping the table' in social media, but couldn’t remember the sequence of characters? When you press WIN+(period) or WIN+(semicolon), in addition to emoji the picker that appears will now include symbols and kaomoji too!

"You may ask, what is kaomoji? Translated literally from Japanese, it means 'face characters' – basically, it’s a way to create faces using only text. You may already use them, for example the one mentioned above is relatively popular.

"Diving more into the symbols side, you’ll find we’ve included sections for punctuation, currency, geometric, math, Latin, and language symbols. As you pick your most commonly used symbols, the most recently used tab will populate with them, so it will be even easier to select them next time."

Clipboard history is also set to get a new look on Windows 10 this year.

Microsoft acknowledged previously the software would not be "compact enough" if small text was being analysed.

Moreover, the firm stated it is now "optimising" Clipboard history to work with text.

Microsoft explained: "Have you already tried using clipboard history? If enabled, it allows you to save multiple clipboard items to use later. Introduced during RS5 development, we’ve been getting great feedback from everyone on this experience, and one of the things we heard most is that the UI wasn’t compact enough – a large space was used for each entry even if it was just a small text fragment.

"We originally opted to show bigger entries so there was space to show an image preview nicely, but when we looked at our data, we found 90 percent of items in the clipboard history were text.

"Based on that and your feedback, we now optimising the design for text snippets – shrinking the height of each entry and thus giving you access to more entries without needing to scroll the view."

Lastly, Cortana is also set for a notable upgrade with the newest version of Windows 10.

The virtual assistant will soon be able to merge reminders and tasks with lists in Microsoft To-Do, meaning everything should be more seamless overall.

Essentially, the update means all lists and reminders from Microsoft To-Do, Outlook and Cortana are all displayed together either on your PC or smartphone.

Microsoft is expected to continue releasing new builds of Windows 10 before a final April update arrives for all fans.
