Microsoft updates Protection History in Windows 10 19H1

Microsoft says Windows 10 is the most secure operating system it ever released, and at the core of its security arsenal is none other than Windows Defender.

While the application has already been praised by security researchers for offering performance that matches the one of third-party antivirus products, Windows Defender keeps getting more improvements, and the upcoming Windows 10 19H1 update will continue this trend.

I’ve already told you that Windows Defender will feature Tamper Protection in Windows 10 19H1 in order to block users from making changes to the security features of the operating system.

But in addition to Tamper Protection, Windows Defender will also be updated with a new Protection History experience that will make it easier to keep an eye on your malware logs and see how the antivirus cleaned your system.

Microsoft says the new Protection History screen has been updated based on feedback and suggestions from users, so it now groups more than just information on the malware detected on your system. You also see blocks issued by Controlled folder access if you use this feature to restrict app access to system folders.

The best of all is that the new UI features a more consistent and straightforward approach that allows you to get more information on the malware discovered on your device. Furthermore, Protection History now shows recommendations to help deal with malware infections, as well as assistance whenever it detects that your computer can be better protected.

Microsoft provides more information on the new Protection History feature:

“The new Protection History experience still shows you detections by Windows Defender Antivirus, but it’s now updated to also give more detailed and easier to understand information about threats and available actions. We have also added Controlled folder access blocks to history, along with any blocks which are made through organizational configuration of Attack Surface Reduction Rules.

If you use the Windows Defender Offline scanning tool, any detections it makes will now also show in your history. Additionally, you will see any pending recommendations (red or yellow states from throughout the app) in the history list.”

Accessing the new Protection History is easy. First of all, launch Windows Security either from the system tray icon or by typing its name in the Start menu. Then, navigate to the following location:

Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Threat history

If no malware was ever found on your system, the UI should be entirely clean, but on the other hand, if any threats were discovered, you should see information on the status and the date and time when it was discovered.

Clicking on a threat provides more information on it, such as the name of malware discovered on the system, alert level, status, and date. You will also see affected items, plus the name of the file that was infected, alongside its location, and the link if you downloaded it from the Internet.

Windows Defender Protection History also offers a bunch of filters that let you see only specific data like recommendations, quarantines items, and cleaned files. You’re also allowed to view only blocked items if Controlled folder access is configured and group threats by severity.

This new experience will be available for all users in Windows 10 19H1, which according to Microsoft’s typical schedule, will be ready in the spring of 2019. Typically, new feature updates are finalized in March and shipped to insiders the same month, while the production rollout should kick off in April.

Further improvements in Windows Defender could be made in the coming months, but for now, you can try out Protection History by installing the latest preview builds in the Fast ring.
