Apple's New iPhones Have A Serious Design Problem

The word is out, Apple AAPL -0.58% is slashing iPhone prices and the reasons why are increasingly clear. Consequently, Apple is investigating the return of an iPhone feature favourite to win fans back, a new report reveals this is about to get a lot harder…

In a nutshell: Barron’s reports Apple has no answer to the bezel-less and notch-less smartphone designs of its rivals. Instead, Apple will re-issue the iPhone X design for a third year running when it launches new iPhones in 2019. And this isn’t the only big area where iPhones will fall behind.

“We think the three new iPhones in 2H19F will likely have the same form factors (body size and displays) as the 2H18 iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max [and 2017 iPhone X],” states the report which adds “Some added AR [augmented reality]-related features” are the big addition.

Top industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo made the same design claim in Octoberso while it is too early to say we have fire, smoke is building.

On top of this, Barron’s write-up reiterates earlier fears that Apple will not have a 5G capable iPhone in 2019. This backs-up an exclusive report from Bloomberg last week which claimed it will be “at least” 2020 before iPhones can use 5G. With 5G performance looking extraordinary, major networks around the world are already rolling it out and AT&T and Verizon have already confirmed a 5G Samsung Galaxy phone is coming soon.

Consequently, the trouble for Apple is repeating its historical pattern of belated upgrades (the iPhone 6 design lasted four generations and iPhone adoption of both 3G and 4G was a year late) is not so easy when its famously loyal fanbase suddenly appears disinterested.

Apple’s response looks set to be returning Touch ID to iPhones to regenerate excitement, but that’s a big ‘IF’ for a userbase largely happy with Face ID and already persuaded by Apple’s (somewhat misleading) claims it is more secure than Touch ID.

In which case, Apple’s new era of iPhone price cuts looks set to continue. Especially if iOS quality control continues to let show-stopping bugs slip into final releases...
