[U.S.B. Hard Disk Drive] Not visable.

Recommended Posts

I decided to reinstall my Solid State Drive into my desktop computer.

I also decided to put the previous Hard Disk Drive which is not an s.s.d. into a caddy and plug into the u.s.b. slot on rear of dektop.

Hard Disk Sentinel recognised it.

However it's not visable in my computer.

It's also not listed in device manager.

Any ideas on hw to correct this, even Zentimo does not display it.

Does the HDD still contain data?  Do you want the data?  Easiest way to fix the problem is Diskpart.  Using diskpart will delete all the data from the drive.  Run it in an elevated command prompt and use the following commands.

list disk (this should show both the drives in the computer}

select disk ? (this is the disk number of the HDD)

clean (this command wipes the drive)

create partition primary (creates a new partition)

select partition 1 (selects the newly created partition)

format quick fs=ntfs (formats the new partition)

Your drive should now be visible/usable.

If this isn't what you want you could try Aomei Partition Assist Standard (free) to work with the drive.

Yes it contains seven (7) partitions of data I want to recover some off it.

When I retrieve some I will turn it into a 2 t.b. (1860 g.b.) empty drive for media.

What operating system?  I ask because Windows 7, for example, only supports 4 Primary MBR or 3 Primary and 1 Logical partitions.  Problem may be your partitions, which is why disk management doesn't see it.  You will have to use a third party program to get your data off the drive since your system doesn't recognize it.

Then your drive is formatted in exFAT. So Windows 10 should be able to see it.  Found a tech note for a similar problem from a couple years ago from Microsoft.

Sorry to know that you are not able to use 2nd Hard drive on Windows 10.

Refer to the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: I suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if it helps.

1. Press Windows Key, then click on Search bar.

2. Type “Troubleshooting” without the quotes and click on Troubleshooting.

3. Then click on View All on the left panel of the screen.

4. Click on Hardware and Devices.

5. Click on Nextand follow the instructions.

If the issues still persist, refer to the below methods.

Method 2: I would suggest you to try to check for the status of the drive in the device manager.
1. Press Windows Key + R Key.
2. Then type “devmgmt.msc” without the quotes and hit on Enter Key.

3. Expand Disk Drive. If you are able to find the driver for the external drive.
6. Then again right click on the driver and click on Properties.

7. Check the device status of the disk.

Check your USB drivers also.  The problem may be in your drivers or setup.  If the drive is being assigned a drive letter that is already used, for example by a CD/DVD device, then it won't show up.  You could change the drive letter, temporarily, used by such a device and then plug the drive in and see if it shows up.

Go into disk management and check, of the drive is there you may have to right click and select something like take ownership to allow access

Thank you I will give it a try.

Does not appear there.

It shows up in hard drive sentinel though.

Its hard to see how the software is seeing the drive if its not showing up in disk management?

  1. Open a Command Prompt window. ...
  2. From the command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter. ...
  3. From the diskpart prompt, type list disk and press Enter.

It lists it as disk 5.

However I want to open it.

Can't so will have to think about it.

I also added into the u.s.b. in a caddy my hybrid solid state drive with windows 7 on it and it also does not show up in my computer.

This problem has several possible causes: partition issues on the external drive, using the wrong file system, dead USB ports, or driver issues in Windows. In a worst-case scenario, the drive itself may be dead.

Go into diskpart and do a list volume with the drive connected.  It should show the drives in your computer with the assigned drive letters.  If there are no assigned drive letters then you can't see it.

Take a look here

Hello again.

See image below.

fmv31k.jpg

Says invalid now it's higlighted.

As I wrote yesterday I also tried another caddy with a hybrid solid state drive in it with Windows seven (7).

That does now show up in explorer either.

Just to add the Toshiba drive is 100% healthy, see image from hard disk sentinel.

What are the results if you run list volume instead of list disk?

There have been reports of hard disk sentinel making inaccurate reports.  Recommend running a different program and check the results.

You might recognize some of these.

https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

You can try one or a couple and see what they report.  Hard to narrow down your problem.

If you plug your dynamic disk in a hard disk cartridge and use it for a period of time, then take out it from the cartridge and plug in your chassis, probably you can find this dynamic disk is in invalid status in Disk Management.

Convert Invalid Dynamic Disk to Basic , for this you can try a professional partition and disk management software to do this work without data loss.

In addition, you could try to reactivate the invalid disk via Diskpart Commands.

Take the following steps:

Type “cmd” in the search bar of “Start Menu”.

Then run the “cmd” as administrator.

Next in the popup Command Prompt window, type “diskpart” and hit “Enter”.

After that, type “list disk” and click “Enter” key button.

Later, make clear the number of invalid disk.

Subsequently, type “select disk <5>” and press “Enter”.

Lastly type “online” and hit “Enter” again.

You could give this a try too,

Disable USB selective suspend setting

Open Power Options from the Control Panel and navigate to Additional power settings. Next, click on ‘Change plan settings’ option adjacent to your selected power plan.

Then go to ‘Change advanced power settings’ and under USB settings, find USB selective suspend setting, and set it to Disabled.

Click Apply and exit.

Or you could try this:

In Device Manager ,click on View > Select Show hidden devices.

Expand all the nodes by clicking on + symbol. If you find any grey or UNKNOWN entries, right click on it and select Uninstall.

Restart your PC. Now try connecting your external drive.

Have you tried Mini tool partition wizard ?

Probably a drive letter issue..

PS: From my experience, Toshiba HDD are shady.

Also, try it on HBCD or similar alternative.
