nir
“Microsoft is investigating this issue,” company says Despite pulled and then re-released after nearly one month, Windows 10 version 1809 still doesn’t offer the smooth experience that users expected. And the living proof is a new bug acknowledged by Microsoft and which forced the company to block the update to Windows 10 version 1809 on systems with certain AMD Radeon graphics cards. Specifically, Microsoft says that due to the fact that AMD no longer supports Radeon HD2000 and HD4000 series graphic processor units (GPUs), users whose computers are equipped with these cards may experience various issues after installing Windows 10 version 1809. One of them hits Microsoft Edge, whose tabs could freeze all of a sudden if the said graphics cards are detected, with the browser becoming unresponsive. Furthermore, Microsoft says, there are users who see error “INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005_atidxx64.dll,” and the same compatibility issue is to blame for it. And last but not least, performance issues on the lock screen may also be caused by the two graphics cards. The ShellExperienceHost could also be hit, the software giant says. Update blocked Due to these issues, Microsoft has decided to completely block systems featuring the two AMD Radeon cards from installing Windows 10 version 1809, and the company says that it’s now investigating to see how it can resolve the problem. As always, an ETA hasn’t been provided, and it’s not known how many devices are impacted by the issue. Windows 10 version 1809 was re-released this week, but Microsoft is using a more cautious approach this time, and not all computers are allowed to download it. While the company has previously offered feature updates with a manual check in Windows Update, this method continues to be available only for systems that are considered to be fully compatible with version 1809. Devices that aren’t being offered the update via Windows Update can still install version 1809 with the Media Creation Tool, though it goes without saying this isn’t recommended. steven36
Seems HD2000 cards have had trouble with Windows 10 since 17.09 https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/1703-1709-update-ruined-atiamd-radeon-hd-2400-xt/c5714dd1-b6b8-4556-99bb-130ea9b0b799 On old AMD hardware from my own experience HD6000 series with my PC that came with Windows 8 its best to just use Windows 8.1 , Windows 7 or GNU Linux when you upgrade to Windows 10 you don't get DX 12 you stay stuck on DX 11 and even if they extend updates for HD2000 and HD4000 series on RS 4 the support will end in 2023 just like Windows 8.1 does before when they extended updates on other systems they blocked you lost 2 years of of the normal 10 years support you get by upgrading windows. ADM stop doing updates for loads of PCs in 2015 it was not tell TH2 came out that M$ even had the right drivers for my PC on Windows 10 they installed 15.7.1 on TH1 and botched it the only drivers I could find that worked for Windows 10 was amd-catalyst-15.6-beta-software-suite-win8.1-64bit-june22,2015.. They sorted it out in TH2 but the graphics driver for my PC for windows 10 never updated since summer of 2015 . Old hardware is a nightmare with Windows 10 .. The best thing AMD done was drop close source catalyst in Linux https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ubuntu-16.04-Dropping-fglrx And about a year latter added nice open source drivers to the Linux Kernel I'm fixing to install Ubuntu Mate 18.10 on my Old AMD PC now. It was worth the years wait and farting around with Linux Mint 17 and Manjaro to never have any more problems 16.0.4.3 onward . So instead of fixing there bugs in Edge to make it compatible with old hardware they block these card way to go Microsoft it's your app that's causing the problem and since no one hardly uses Edge I don't see it as a big one ..
