Auto-expanding Start menu sections now available

Windows 10 19H1 will come with a new option that many might not even notice at first.

Microsoft is making the navigation pane in the Start menu auto-expandable, which means that you just need to move the mouse cursor over the icons there and the full menus automatically show up.

The company has previously tested this new Start menu behavior with a limited set of insiders, but it’s now making this update available for all Windows insiders in the Fast ring with the release of build 18282. The company explains in the release notes:

“When you hover over the navigation pane in Start, after a short period it will now automatically expand. This is something that a portion of Insiders have had for a little bit now, and after finding positive results we’re now rolling it out to all Insiders.”

A similar update is planned for Cortana as well, as Microsoft wants to bring a little bit more consistency across the main features of the Windows desktop. The digital assistant will be separated from the search UI in future builds, so the company is clearly exploring several other improvements for the desktop.

Window 10 19H1 coming in spring 2019

The new build shipped today also includes updates for the Start and Taskbar jump lists to boast Fluent Design and thus align with the rest of the operating system.

All these improvements are currently part of the preview builds that Microsoft releases to Windows insiders, so users on production devices won’t be seeing them just yet. The public rollout is projected to kick off in the spring of 2019, with Microsoft’s typical roadmap pointing to a March 2019 sign-off date for the RTM build and an April launch.

More improvements to the desktop could be released in the coming builds, especially as Microsoft is working on a new light theme for the operating system.
