Microsoft is apparently working on more storage options for OneDrive

Microsoft's Office 365 subscription, alongside giving users access to the full suite of Office applications, also provides them with 1 terabyte of online storage via OneDrive. However, the company has stuck to that number for a while now, even as users' data storage requirements have steadily increased and competitors have begun offering options that provide larger storage capacities.

 

That seems to be changing soon, as a new tweet from Microsoft's Director of Program Management for OneDrive, Omar Shahine, suggests in response to a user's desire to migrate from OneDrive to Apple's iCloud:

While Shahine does ask users to have hope, he fails to give an ETA for when we might actually see these new options become available. It's also unclear what Microsoft's plans for expanding storage capacities will be, exactly. Will the base amount of storage available with Office 365 subscriptions be expanded for all subscribers or will the company be willing to offer more storage for an extra fee?

 

The company's cloud storage offerings were, in fact, best-in-class back in 2014 when it announced all Office 365 users would be upgraded from 1TB of storage to unlimited storage. Unfortunately, due to some users exploiting the system, the company decided to renege on its promise and downgraded all accounts back to 1TB back in 2017, which is where the storage cap has remained since. Hopefully, the new OneDrive plans will help Microsoft remain more competitive in an era where 4K content and more powerful mobile cameras which require a lot more space are increasingly becoming more commonplace.
