Windows 10 version 1809 gets not one, but two updates

Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) got two different cumulative updates this month, and they bring several security and non-security improvements for systems already running this eagerly-anticipated release.

First of all, it’s cumulative update KB4464455, which increases the OS build number to 17763.107 and comes with fixes with bugs in the operating system.

Surprisingly given Microsoft’s promise to improve the quality of Windows updates, KB4464455 doesn’t actually fix many of the bugs reported by Windows 10 version 1809 users lately. However, it corrects a black screen bug on some servers, as well as connectivity issues on guest VMs when applications inject the low-resource flag on packets.

Then, it’s KB4467708, which brings the OS build number even higher to 17763.134 and includes additional security fixes, like patches for Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, the Windows kernel.

In terms of non-security fixes, this update resolves a problem causing the on-screen keyboard to appear when running automated tests or when installing physical keyboards. Again, no patches for widespread issues that made the rounds lately.

Changing default apps issue

Both updates come with one known issue which hits all systems and that for some reason was ignored by Microsoft for this release.

Changing default apps on Windows 10 version 1803 and 1809 isn’t working as expected, and Microsoft says that it’s working on a fix that could go live in late November.

“After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps. In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default,” it says.

This is a bug that was discovered in version 1803 and 1809 earlier this month, and which we’re seeing on our systems here too. Despite acknowledging it last week, it looks like the company needs more time to resolve it, so expect a new cumulative update to be shipped in the coming weeks.
