It was less than a month ago that I was playing music through several different players (VLC, PotPlayer, EAC, AIMP, MusicBee, foobar2000, Windows Music, and maybe a few more) and most of the songs that I played sounded better through good old reliable Winamp. Thats what i used to think until i switched to XMPLAY.. smaller in download, smaller footprint. does everything i need it to do.. including playing amiga mods. But keep in mind it is beta and you could find bugs . The posters over at Winamp forum dont seem to optimistic about it some say winamp community update project version witch you have be a beta tester to get is much better than these betas . Some seem to think when it gets released in 2019 it want be the same and i'm not sure the desktop version will get all features the mobile version will they talked about in there media post the other day , how you have to use so many different apps on mobile to play music that they wanted to make and app that plays them all and how on desktop this is not a big problem . The ones i seen on Windows that could play 3rd party legit online streaming sites never lived up to the hype Clementine Music Player could not let you sign into spotify and others as a free user you had to have premium to use it Tomahawk player was the same way. There was one on Linux that could let you sign in but there truing that app into a paid app, it started out free and there just going support the free version for some years tell it goes all paid, but they allow these services ads . Only way to do this is make web apps these are apps that work like little browsers. The fact is they cant legally make players for spotify ,dezzer and others for free users unless they allow there ads . Even Cherry Player that lets you listen to YouTube on Windows breaks Google's toss and is not even legal software. Kodi is the way to go if you dont want to buy premium streaming they have addons that scrape a few of the high quality pirate music streaming sites . I dont never use spotify i only tested it, i have a large local library of music and kodi with music addons. Right now on Windows i'm using Winyl x64 version it seems nice and it is a super fast player for windows maybe i will switch to Winamp next year we will see how it goes I like Winamp a lot and its nice to see download links at homepage again but I had stop using Winamp years before they stop updating it I used AIMP 3 but once v4 came i stop using it . The reason I stop using Winamp was the larger your music library became the slower it got and AIMP 3 was fast plus i did not have to pay or use warez it was free and worked better for me at the time. This day and time they not selling many apps on windows how many paid apps are there the masses use vs free apps now days theirs not many can you even name any? I'm not talking about pirates they not the masses so they dont set software trends. The only OSes were paid apps are making any money is Apple ones that's why most devs are on apple now they pay better because apple desktop is mostly used by the rich and famous .. A lot of paid windows apps has been around since the 1990s , if you see new apps on windows and they want ever reach the masses they have to be free and so is Winamp now. CarterTaz Posted October 19, 2018 Share Posted October 19, 2018 Going to do a multi response here, andy2004, I have never tried XMPLAY, but it looks like others I have tried in the pasts (Qmmp & Xmms) and they felt like a Winamp wannabe, so I stuck with the origianal. FreeRyde, no residuals, I'm a hard rock/Classic rock guy who was listening to several songs about a month ago and noticed that they didn't sound quite right (a really big one was a old Vandenberg CD, that had sort of a echo on most of the songs) this varied from app to app, but sounded fine through Winamp. Just like the good old days when it was on the FM dial. Finally, steven36, I don't do a whole bunch of streaming, but YES, I agree with you about the problems with many players out there, too much extras and not enough buffering. As far as your library problem with AIMP goes, I will have to give MusicBee credit on that one. As far as layout/library goes it is one of my favorites now, and sound is not bad, just need to tweak it now and then. This has been my go to when I'm in front of my computer to play with the EQ to dial in some songs. They offer a portable version to give it a test run. It is skinnable, multi-format freeware / shareware. Besides MP3, Winamp supports a very wide variety of contemporary and specialized music file formats, including MIDI, MOD, MPEG-1 audio layers 1 and 2, AAC, M4A, FLAC, WAV and Windows Media Audio. Winamp was one of the first common music players on Windows to support playback of Ogg Vorbis by default. As far as Helium goes, I have never tried it before, but just checked the feedback/reviews and they are not very kind or point out that you miss out on most features without paying for them, while MusicBee is free.
