Last year, we reported that Microsoft is working on a Photos Companion app for Android and iOS; the app serves as a way for users to wirelessly sync photos from their smartphone with the Photos app on Windows 10. Today, Microsoft has officially released the app on both platforms.

The app itself has a very straightforward interface detailing the steps necessary to get things going. Users are required to scan a QR code generated by the Photos app on PC with the companion on mobile. After that, select images to transfer over to the computer. Both devices must also be on the same Wi-Fi network and the latest version of the Photos app, 2018.18011.13110.0 or higher, on PC is required.

Microsoft notes that Photos Companion aims to ease the struggle of quickly transferring images between mobile and PC. Previously users would have to resort to methods like USB, Bluetooth, or cloud transfer — the app seems to offer a less tedious, streamlined process for photo sharing.

You can now download the Photos Companion app on Android and iOS.
