Pence: US era of strategic patience with North Korea over

US Vice-President Mike Pence has said his country's "era of strategic patience" with North Korea is over.

Mr Pence first made the remarks at the demilitarised zone (DMZ), the area dividing the two Koreas, during a visit to South Korea to reaffirm ties.

His visit comes amid escalated tensions on the peninsula, with heated rhetoric from both North Korea and the US.

He arrived in Seoul on Sunday hours after North Korea carried out a failed missile launch.

On Monday, the US and South Korea launched a joint air force military exercise to ensure readiness against North Korea, according to South Korean media.

Mr Pence, whose father served in the Korean War, visited the truce village of Panmunjom, where the war's armistice was signed.

'Don't test US resolve'

Speaking alongside South Korea's acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn later, he said North Korea had conducted nuclear and missile tests as the previous US administration had observed a policy of "strategic patience", but this was now over.

"Just in the past two weeks, the world witnessed the strength and resolve of our new president in actions taken in Syria and Afghanistan," Mr Pence said.

"North Korea would do well not to test his resolve or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region."

He reiterated US support for South Korea, telling his host: "We are with you 100%."

Mr Hwang hailed the early deployment of the controversial US missile defence system (known as Thaad) designed to protect against threats from North Korea.

The US vice-president said he was disappointed that China had taken retaliatory actions against South Korea in response to the move.

Mr Pence's latest comments echoed those made by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who warned that pre-emptive military action was "on the table" when he visited the DMZ last month.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would not tolerate "missile adventures by Pyongyang" but a unilateral use of power by the US would be "a very risky course".

Mr Pence earlier went to Camp Bonifas, a United Nations military compound near the DMZ.

Mr Pence is visiting South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Australia on a 10-day Asia tour.

On Sunday, Lt Gen HR McMaster, the US top security adviser, said his country was working on a "range of options" with China, the first confirmation the two countries were co-operating to find a solution to the North Korean issue.

US President Donald Trump also said on Sunday that Beijing was "working with us on the North Korean problem". He had stated last week that the US and its allies may "deal with" Pyongyang if China did not.

The BBC's Stephen Evans in Seoul says US policy now seems to be to persuade China to contain North Korea while keeping the economic and military pressure on.

China, historically Pyongyang's sole major ally, has reiterated its call for North Korea to stop all tests, and has also called for a peaceful solution.

Besides Sunday's launch, North Korea has held a series of large-scale events in the past week including a massive celebration and military parade on Saturday.

It has denounced the US deployment of an aircraft carrier group to the region, saying it would respond by "force of arms" to "reckless moves".

Observers have said North Korea may conduct a sixth nuclear test soon, with activity reported at nuclear facilities, according to the website 38 North.

Meanwhile about 1,000 US airmen and fighter jets are taking part in a combat training exercise in South Korea, reported Yonhap news agency. South Korea has sent about 500 personnel and planes. The Max Thunder exercise will last for two weeks.

What is the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (Thaad)?

  • Shoots down short and medium-range ballistic missiles in the terminal phase of their flight
  • Uses hit-to-kill technology - where kinetic energy destroys the incoming warhead
  • Has a range of 200km and can reach an altitude of 150km
  • US has previously deployed it in Guam and Hawaii as a measure against potential attacks from North Korea

now tell me how US is allowed to have nuclear weapons? oh you mean they are stable that's why they nuked Japan? Lol

Whether a nuclear war breaks out within the next few days or not – the despicable fact remains, that the entire world is being held hostage by American military madness.

It seems only a matter of time before the US finally triggers a war with any number of foreign states that it designates as "enemies" – North Korea, Syria, Iran, Russia or China.Or any other state whom Washington deems to be a "threat" in its paranoid hegemonic view of the world. The common denominator here is US military aggression.

And what makes US military power so dangerous is that the people who run that country are, to be blunt, so stupid – full of their own delusion self-righteousness and ignorance.

US news outlet NBC is reporting that the Trump administration is ready to launch pre-emptive military strikes on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Meanwhile, North Korea says that it is prepared to pre-empt any US strikes with a nuclear attack on America or its allies in response to what Pyongyang says is provocative aggression.

This weekend marks a major anniversary for North Korea, the 105th birth date of its founder Kim Il Sung. His grandson, Kim Jong Un, the current leader, may be tempted to carry out a sixth underground nuclear weapon test to "celebrate" the occasion, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. Let's keep in mind, however, that such action by North Korea is only a "test" – not an act of war.

But what is undeniable is that the amassing of nuclear forces – an "armada" as US President Donald Trump calls it – off the Korean Peninsula by Washington is bound to be seen as an aggression by the North Korean leadership. It is arguable that the US is the one that is carrying out an act of war by sailing its forces towards North Korea. The Trump's administration's launching of 59 cruise missiles on Syria last week, in what was a flagrant violation of international law, was no doubt a calculated signal from  Then in the past few days, the dropping by the US of the biggest non-nuclear bomb – the MOAB or so-called Mother of all Bombs – in Afghanistan is another calculated step towards obliterating any legal restraint on Washington, as well as again sending a signal to North Korea and others that it is prepared to act unilaterally and preemptively.

All major powers in the Pacific region – including Russia and China – are calling for a negotiated solution to the tinderbox tensions over the Korean Peninsula. But the only power that is refusing to open dialogue is Washington. US secretary of state Rex Tillerson in Moscow this week said there would be no talks to resolve the Korean crisis for the foreseeable future. Why not? Who is the US to dictate that?

Trump has said he will solve the "North Korea problem" alone and with military force. Such a mentality begs the question: who is the rogue state here?

What is even more perplexing than US military force and its arsenal of 4,700 actionable nukes (Russia has 4,500, according to the Arms Control Association) is the foolishness of the American rulers.Washington that it is willing to use massive military force whenever and wherever it deems, regardless of legalities.

he NBC report cited above says that the White House is ready to order strikes on Pyongyang "should officials become convinced that North Korea is about to follow through with a nuclear weapons test." That's hardly a proportionate response to a "test."

Nevertheless, the truly disturbing phrase here is "should US officials become convinced." Given Trump's trigger-happy disregard for international law and the abject standard of US intelligence, a preemptive US strike on North Korea is therefore highly probable.

Trump's recent aggression in Syria is testament to the unstable, reckless nature of politicians and military chiefs in Washington.

Media reports show that Trump made up his mind to attack Syria with Tomahawk missiles based on his watching of Fox News footage of the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria on April 4. In addition, the US president reportedly made his decision to launch those strikes at the urging of his daughter Ivanka's emotional reaction to seeing children dying in the alleged chemical incident.

There is good reason to believe that the Syrian chemical weapons incident was a false flag perpetrated by Western-backed terrorist jihadists. Yet based on the most superficial allegations that the Syrian government carried out the chemical weapons attack, the Trump administration went ahead with a murderous assault on that country.

Trump's volatile ego is added into the explosive mix. For weeks now he has been asserting to "take care of the North Korea problem." The assembling of US nuclear strike forces off the Korean Peninsula, in conjunction with faulty US intelligence and a fatuous, egotistical Commander-in-Chief surrounded by gung-ho advisors, are driving the logic for war.

On the other side, the North Korean leadership has taken note of Trump's latest aggression in Syria. It is warning that it might take preemptive action. Seoul, the capital of America’s South Korean ally, is well within the range of North Korea's firepower. With a population of over 20 million, an attack on Seoul would be catastrophic. Once the missiles start flying, the world will likely to be plunged into a global war, dragging in China and Russia in a nuclear confrontation with the US.

This dire prognosis is not inevitable. Dialogue and a negotiated political settlement to the Korean crisis is entirely possible. The two Koreas, Japan, China, Russia and the United States could solve the recurring problem if all sides committed to a peaceful resolution of decades-old military tensions. But the burden of responsibility lies with the US to commit to such talks. It refuses to do so, insisting instead on a military showdown.

What makes the problem so precarious is Washington's bull-headed, arrogant stupidity. Trump is just the latest manifestation of Washington's hubris, with a recklessness that goes beyond previous administrations.

Trump's readiness to use unilateral military aggression – as seen in Syria last week – and in his outrageous deployment this week But more than this, what is even more alarming is the delusional nature of US "intelligence" and American political "leadership." If the US can launch cruise missiles on Syria based on highly suspect claims over chemical weapons, plus a president who is so gullible and suggestible, then the world is truly being pushed to an abysmal precipice.

Far more dangerous than American nuclear weapons is the incorrigible unscrupulousness of American rulers. These are the same kind of people whose self-righteousness and criminal disregard for humanity led them to launch atomic weapons on Japan 72 years ago. A monstrous act of genocide which they still justify as "being right".

It is an abomination that the world is being held hostage by American military madness. And has been for more than seven decades ever since the Second World War. The question is: can this American madness be defused safely, and brought to a peaceful end?

BBC, well nobody expects that british news channel to tell something good about North Korea, of course they praise US. honestly it's not entirely praise, just talking about one side and talking about capabilities of that side alone, maybe because they don't have enough information on North Korea's capabilities.

but the real war is different than exercises and theories on paper. those anti-missile systems have never been used in a war since WW 2. there is always computational error, and the incapablity of air defenses against the swarm of missiles.

Also, don't forget about China, think they will let US take over NK and make bases right under the nose of them?

Asad drops chemical weapons on his own people. LOL

then what they hell UN did when they emptied Syria's government's storages of chemical weapons in 2013 and verified that the Syrian government no more poses any type of chemical weapon what so ever?

Iran and Russia and other countries demanded investigation.

and how do you know that Syrian government bombed his own people? trump fired lame tomahawk missiles in Syria and wiped out all the evidence, on what basis are you claiming that?

these are only 1% of the proof they are hiding from you. my advice to you, stop listening and believing media and news controlled by your government. these people talking here are US citizens too, but they are wiser and chose to use their brain instead of letting news websites think for them.

The only country which used nuclear weapon now wants others not to have it. Its like our neighbour carrying a gun in his pocket and saying others not to carry guns.

The only solution to all these, lets nuke the nukes. :P:lol:

It makes good sense to me i dont think you understand , The  USA have Nuclear warheads pointing at  everywhere  All super powers  already has there own nukes  .  The A bomb was released because of Japan attacking Pearl Harbor . There is no such thing as Nuke the Nukes its we all just die in the end .Back when the USA  released the A bomb they didn't know what they know now. There is a reason all these countries have never launched a nuclear attack every since  they dont want to die all it takes is for the wrong people are country to have nukes and they could cause death to the whole world.
