Prepare to try Winamp 5.8 Beta soon

Winamp is definitely one of the best media players available for Microsoft Windows. It has a long history, impressive popularity and still has plenty of users around the world. Unfortunately, the project started to lost its popularity due to AOL and their management policies. Winamp got a paid pro version, and there was no UI improvement for many years. After 2013, it was discontinued. However, there is new hope shining on the horizon.

Being a big fan of Winamp, I was happy to discover that Winamp 5.8 Beta is almost on its way. The new owners behind the project are working to release a new version. Unfortunately, they are not a big team for now, but still Winamp is not dead!

Eddy Richman from the original Winamp team is continuing his hard work to keep our favorite player alive

Some details of the development have become known. Code from patented technologies and cross-licensed code has been cleaned up. This means Winamp can become 100% free, without a Pro version with all features unlocked out of the box. This will affect MP3 and AAC decoders, the CD ripping feature and the H.264 decoder.

If you are fan of Winamp like me, we can expect something to play with in the near future!

If you are interested in Winamp vNEXT, you can track the following thread at the official forum.

While the official site is still in development, I have collected some nice stuff here. Using the link below, you can download the last version of Winamp which was available to the public, including Winamp 5.6.6.3516 stable and Winamp 5.7.0.3444 beta.

Download Winamp 5, Skins and Plugins

Winamp was a great player with lots of plugins that made it very versatile.  I still have my last update and plugins that I downloaded from the original website and they still work very well.  In other words it still 'whip's the llama's ass.'

All the original winamp sayings are here

I still use Winamp Pro v5.622.3189 to full satisfaction because I can remember v5.666 was causing problems at the time

Winamp is dead.

A new version was supposed to be released several times since AOL sold it.

Don't hold your breath.

Well it is perfectly explained what happened here and I still hope the new version will come out someday. I still find it to be the best music player.

+1.

Though you can make Audacious look and work just like it with a couple of clicks. It's what I use in Linux.

PLUS you can use Winamp 2x skins (maybe later ones, but I have a favorite) in Audacious.

From the Winamp forum:

"I would gladly use a Winamp without cd burning, gracenote, and shoutcast, web browser, podcasts, online services. I use none of that stuff."

I totally agree. And I'll add, without a video player. We have VLC for that.

Yeah, its the best audio player, simple yet powerful. Its surely gonna come back. They can start a crowd funding for it, I'm sure lot of people will contribute.

Winamp WAS one of the first serious MP3 players and it was free, so it was quite unique and probably it defined the first standards for a player. I remember having used it about 20 years ago. Since then litrally THOUSANDS of player versions have been released, doing about the same as Winamp, so by now I don't believe it has anything new to offer except fame of passed day.

But I don't want ot sound too negative. In any case, I'll be really glad to download it, have it and try it and I mean, the NEW version, not the last stable one.

Ah.. and a stupid question: if it's the New Winamp, why 5.8 beta and not 6.0?

Actually, the first "good" version was shareware, and one of the first keygens I ever wrote back when I was part of the "bad guys".

As to versioning, I don't think any multiple of 3 is "lucky" for Winamp.

So quite probably my mistake, but I'm sure I got my first version back in mid-90s free from some of those CDs which came with computer magazines full of freeware and shareware. Maybe it still was not a "good" version but it was actually a freeware.

You should go back to cracking! The crack world always needs good crackers.

I was so excited to see this thread

I downloaded the latest beta from winaero and launched it in my winamp install. Gives error that beta is too old.  It's been 5 months... sigh.

I still use Winamp because I find it to be the best. I've tuned it over the years.

I use 5.666 or whatever. It does work... it does also crash sometimes.

I do want opus support. There's a plugin out, but I can't find it.  Plus I love the idea of having software improved and updated.

The new updated version will strip out all the pro features

Quote

ex.  MP3 and AAC decoders, the CD ripping feature and the H.264 decoders.

potplayer does have opus support .. so it can double up as a audio player

That's a good temp solution, thank you, but in the long term I would love all audio to go through winamp. :(

In the meantime, PotPlayer it is!!

Potplayer is a better long term solution.. because it is a mulitpurpose media player that can play audio and video

both offline and streaming.. if you had a single 'media player'  replacement this would be it.

It has extensive file support so it can play anything you can throw at it... even 6 channel audio support

has extensive internal codecs baed on LAV and ffshow.. If you run into codec incompatibility, it can use decoders from codec packs..

In audio playback mode, it can look like winamp or you can "skin" it..

I doubt winamp will support the newer and proprietary formats out there..

PotPlayer is WITHOUT QUESTION the BEST video player out right now (it even beat the legendary Zoomplayer).

As an audio player, it's not comparable to Winamp.  If you can figure out a way to configure PotPlayer to do this, let me know. I haven't been able to:

d8GmIpa.png

What you are looking at:

1. Left window is plugin AlbumList looking at inside each folder as an Album with M3U

2. Middle is coverart

3. Right side is playlist. When I double click on the album name shows the contents in playlist window

Each window is searchable.

Enhancer 017 makes the music sounds alive.

Winamp is extremely fast.

It does everything I have wanted so far, except opus.  I am very open to change though.
