Independence Day: Resurgence trailer promises even bigger alien spaceships

It’s been almost 20 years since the summer blockbuster Independence Day hit theaters, and that means Hollywood is right on track to take advantage of that nostalgia. Next summer a new Independence Day movie will again pit humans against aliens, but thankfully it’s not a reboot. This is a proper sequel starring the one and only Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, and yes, Brent Spiner among others. The first trailer for Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence is out, and the aliens brought a bigger ship.

In case you never saw the original (what kind of Geek are you?), it’s your basic alien invasion story. The creepy, tentacle-waving aliens show up and start leveling cities, but humanity is saved by none other than Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith with the aid of an improbable computer virus and a nuclear weapon. Will Smith is conspicuously absent from this film, by the way.

So this time, the aliens are back 20 years after being defeated by the puny human race. They’ve apparently pulled a Jaws and realized they needed a bigger boat (spaceship). Humanity has used salvaged alien technology to beef up Earth’s defenses in anticipation of another attack, but again, the new alien spaceship is really big.

A large part of the trailer has President Whitmore’s (Bill Pullman) rousing speech from the first film playing over it. That should really get the nostalgia flowing. The trailer promises to have a lot more space battles than the original, but maybe that won’t be so great. Part of the appeal of Independence Day was watching humanity face an insurmountable enemy—some F-18s versus UFOs? Not a fair fight, but now we have our own futuristic alien weapons.

The movie comes out June 24th, 2016. In the meantime, there’s a website that offers a glimpse of events between the original attack and present day in the ID universe. It is cleverly called “The War of 1996.”
