Anti-government protesters, one holding the Ukrainian national flag, drive a military vehicle at the Independence square in Kyiv on Feb. 22. Amid unconfirmed reports that President Viktor Yanukovych has fled the nation, Ukraine's parliament is seeking to take charge, appoint new leaders and schedule a new presidential election by May.

Editor's Note: The Kyiv Post has been covering the anti-government, pro-democracy EuroMaidan protests from their very beginning on Nov. 21, when President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a political and trade association agreement with the European Union. The protests are in their 93rd day on Feb. 21. Nearly 100 people have been killed since the demonstrations started and thousands injured in clashes between protesters and police. Demonstrators are demanding Yanukovych's resignation and early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Tymoshenko freed with 322 votes; opposition member of parliament Arsen Avakov interior minister

Feb. 22, 1:33 p.m. -- Parliament voted with 322 votes to immediately free ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko from prison in Kharkiv. She is expected to come to Independence Square in Kyiv once she is released. Parliament also voted to name Arsen Avakov as interior minister in charge of the nation's police. Parliament also voted to replace Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka. -- Katya Gorchinskaya

Turchynov appointed acting prime minister

Feb. 22, 1:12 p.m. -- In another sign of how the nation is changing power, 314 out of 450 lawmakers voted to elect Batkivshchyna Party opposition leader Oleksandr Turchynov as acting prime minister. Serhiy Tigipko, a member of parliament who defected from the pro-President Viktor Yanukovych Party of Regions, says the appointment of interior minister should await decision by a new parliamentary majority. Yuriy Miroshnychenko, Yanukovych's representative in parliament, warned Ukraine is in danger of creating parallel power structures.

i just do not see how this could have ended any other way...Putin knows he could not have sent in his army like former russian dictators did so in a few other counties when the Berlin wall was still up...and there is no way that this what info wars says it is... this is the vast majority of the nation rising up to stop a government that was going way down the wrong path when the government was siding with Putin's russia against the people will...it is just too bad there had to be bloodshed to get to this point....still much turmoil to come in the days ahead

I find it very ironic (regardless of who's right or wrong), that one should support unlawful paramilitary heavily armed unconstitutionally formed group of people who forced parliament into spontaneous coup d'état.

On the other hand that one just signed anti-protest "Trespass Bill" and essentially criminalized protests.

An article from 18th of February, so a week old now but it says what this Proxy-War is about .

As sparks fly between a Ukrainian military APC, possibly the same one we revealed earlier, as it gets into some blazingly close encounters with the Kiev protesters. It is unclear who won however it is quite clear that at this point the proxy war in Ukraine between Russia/Gazprom and the European Union/US State Dept/Saudi/Qatar can be upgraded to "hot."

Its all about the Qartari Oil Gas (Gaz) pipeline

That is an important key piece of the puzzle, you are keen to point that out sir ! Dynamic thinking there to read between the headlines!

more to follow as this story develops....

...in an unrelated story, (yet somehow connected) the FCC wants to place agents to "monitor" ( read: control) the news !!

Reuters adds:

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday said Russia had
grave doubts about the legitimacy of those in power in Ukraine following President Viktor Yanukovich's ouster, saying their recognition by some states was an "aberration".

"We do not understand what is going on there. There is a real threat to our interests and to the lives of our citizens,"
Medvedev was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.

"
There are big doubts about the legitimacy of a whole series of organs of power that are now functioning there."

Finally, from the AP:

Dmitry Medvedev said Monday, according to Russian news agencies, that the new authorities have come to power as a result of "armed mutiny," so their legitimacy is causing "big doubts."

He said Russia would be ready to resume relations with Ukraine once it sees a "normal, modern government based on laws and constitution of Ukraine."

"If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kiev to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government," he said.

Medvedev added that Russia's decision to recall its ambassador in Kiev for consultations meant that "there is a threat for our interests, and for life and health of our people in the embassy."

Ukraine's Naftogaz slashes Russian gas imports in February

(Reuters) - Ukraine's state oil and gas company, Naftogaz, has slashed gas imports from Russia's Gazprom to 28 million cubic meters per day as of February 24 from 147 million, two Russian industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

They said Naftogaz had gradually reduced its imports from 147 million cubic meters as of February 1, but did not offer a reason for the cuts.
Upheaval in Ukraine which has seen the opposition take power and the country's president, Viktor Yanukovich, flee over the weekend has stirred fears that Moscow may use gas transit and prices to influence its neighbor.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev hinted on Monday that gas prices, reduced as part of a Russian bailout in December, may revert to higher levels.

Ukraine consumes about 55 billion cubic meters of gas each year, and more than half is imported from Russia. Gazprom exported 161.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe last year.

A Gazprom official declined to comment on Naftogaz import volumes but said Russian gas transit to Europe was unaffected.
In December, Russia agreed to reduce the gas price for Kiev to $268.50 per 1,000 cubic meters, a cut of about one third from around $400 which Ukraine had paid since 2009. Under the deal, gas prices are revised quarterly.

Eduard Stavytsky, Ukraine's acting energy minister, was quoted as saying on Tuesday that Kiev had paid off $1.68 billion of its gas debts to Russia as of February 24 out of a total $3.3 billion in 2013 and 2014.

The last dispute over gas pricing between Russia and Ukraine caused shortages in Europe over the winter of 2009.

Putin puts troops in western Russia on alert in drill

(Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin ordered an urgent drill to test the combat readiness of the armed forces across western Russia on Wednesday, flexing Moscow's military muscle amid tension with the West over Ukraine.

Putin has ordered several such surprise drills in different Russian regions since he returned to the presidency in 2012, saying the military must be kept on its toes, but the crisis in neighboring Ukraine gave them added geopolitical resonance.

"In accordance with an order from the president of the Russian Federation, forces of the Western Military District were put on alert at 1400 (0500 ET) today," the Interfax news agency quoted Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying.

The western district encompasses most of western Russia and borders Ukraine, which lies between NATO nations and Russia.

Forces must "be ready to bomb unfamiliar testing grounds" as part of the drill, Shoigu told a Defence Ministry meeting.

Putin has made no public comment on Ukraine since President Viktor Yanukovich was driven from power over the weekend after months of political turmoil sparked by his decision to spurn deals with the European Union and improve ties with Russia.

The United States and European nations have warned Russia against military intervention in Ukraine, a former Soviet republic that Putin has called a "brother nation" and wants to be part of a Eurasian Union he is building in the region.

Russian officials have said Moscow will not interfere in Ukraine, while accusing the West of doing so, and Interfax cited the speaker of the upper parliament house, Valentina Matviyenko, as saying on Wednesday it would not use force.

But Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that Russia's interests and its citizens in Ukraine were under threat, language reminiscent of statements justifying Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008, when he was president.

Shoigu said the drill would be conducted in two stages, ending on March 3, and also involved the command centers of Russia's Air and Space Defence forces, paratroops and long-range aviation as well as some troops in central Russia.

In the two-day first stage, military units would be brought to "the highest degree of combat readiness" and would be deployed to testing areas on land and sea, Interfax quoted Shoigu as saying.

The second stage would include tactical exercises and involve warships from the Northern and Baltic Fleets, he said, and some warplanes would move to combat airfields.

No mention was made of the Black Sea Fleet, which is based in Sevastopol in Crimea, where tension over Ukraine's turmoil is high because of its presence and a large Russian-speaking population.

Shoigu said the drill would also test the counterterrorism measures in place at military units. Russian officials have referred to some of the Ukrainian opposition forces whose protests pushed Yanukovich from power as "terrorists".

Statement by NATO Defence Ministers on Ukraine

We continue to follow developments in Ukraine very closely. We deplore the tragic loss of life. We welcome the fact that violence has been stopped through negotiations that paved the way for a peaceful outcome. We emphasise the importance of an inclusive political process based on democratic values, respect for human rights, minorities and the rule of law, which fulfils the democratic aspirations of the entire Ukrainian people.

NATO and Ukraine have a distinctive partnership, embodied in the NATO-Ukraine Commission. Through that partnership framework, NATO stands ready to continue to engage with Ukraine and assist with the implementation of reforms. Defence reform and military cooperation remain key priorities. We commend the Ukrainian armed forces for not intervening in the political crisis. In a democracy, it is imperative that the armed forces do not intervene in the political process. We underscore the need to strengthen democratic control over the defence and security sector, with effective parliamentary oversight and the robust involvement of civil society. In the context of recent tragic events, transparent democratic and accountable institutions are essential to the future of Ukraine.

A sovereign, independent and stable Ukraine, firmly committed to democracy and the rule of law, is key to Euro-Atlantic security. Consistent with the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership between NATO and Ukraine, NATO Allies will continue to support Ukrainian sovereignty and independence, territorial integrity, democratic development, and the principle of inviolability of frontiers, as key factors of stability and security in Central and Eastern Europe and on the continent as a whole.

Maybe.....the thing I don't like is Putin can blackmail Western Europe by throttling back the natural Gas valve - thats what I'm using now to heat my home here in Europe as does much of Europe .But maybe Gazprom also needs the money and putin needs the Tax Revenue .I'm quite happy if Ukraine Joins Europe but it will take 10-15 years IMO to bring their Economy in to line .

"Europe Is Now Run By Big Banks, Big Business, And Big Bureaucrats"

Source

With Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras settling into his role as EU President, UKIP's Nigel Farage stunned the "Goldman Sachs puppet" with a 150-second tirade of truthiness he has likely never experienced. Farage sacrastically remarks how Greeks "will be dancing in the streets" at Samaras' 'successful' negotiation on MiFiD reminding him that "60% of youth are unemployed and the neo-nazi party are on the march." Europe is now run by "big business, big banks, and big bureaucrats," Farage goes on, suggesting the smarmy-looking Samaras should "rename his party from New Democracy to No Democracy." People do not want a United State of Europe, the outspoken UKIP leader explains, they want a "Europe of sovereign states," and concludes ominously, "the European elections will be a watershed."

...And you come here Mr Samaras and you tell us that you represent the sovereign will of the Greek people? Well, I'm sorry, but you're not in charge of Greece, and I suggest you rename and rebrand your party - it's called 'New Democracy', I suggest you call it 'No Democracy'.

Because Greece is now under foreign control. You can't make any decisions, you've been bailed out, and you've surrendered democracy, the thing your country invented in the first place.

And you can't admit that joining the euro was a mistake - of course Mr Papandreou did that didn't he, he even said there should be a referendum in Greece and within 48 hours, the unholy trinity (troika) that now run this European Union had him removed and replaced by a ex-Goldman Sachs employee puppet.

We are run now by big business, big banks and in the shape of Mr Barroso, big bureaucrats...

A reshuffled Ukrainian Parliament installed following a coup last week has voted to appoint Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the new prime minister of the country. Yats, as Victoria Nuland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. State Department, called him, is a natural choice. He is a millionaire former banker who served as economy minister, foreign minister and parliamentary speaker before Yanukovych took office in 2010. He is a member of Yulie Tymoshenko’s Fatherland Party. Prior to the revolution cooked up by the State Department and executed by ultra-nationalist street thugs, Tymoshenko was incarcerated for embezzlement and other crimes against the people of Ukraine. Now she will be part of the installed government, same as she was after the last orchestrated coup, the Orange Revolution.

Ukraine tensions rise amid report of more armed gunmen in Crimea

From The CBC News ~ World Division ( Does THIS Meet your approval dMog?)

Ukraine's Viktor Yanukovych asks for Russian protection from 'extremists'

NyZAKYx.png

Dozens of armed men in military uniforms have reportedly seized an airport in Ukraine's strategic Crimea region.

Witnesses told the Interfax news agency that the 50 or so men, seen early Friday, were wearing the same gear as those who seized government buildings in the regional capital of Simferopol on Thursday and raised the Russian flag.

The report says the men with "Russian navy ensigns" surrounded the Simferopol Airport's domestic flights terminal.

The report could not be immediately confirmed. It comes one day after masked gunmen stormed Crimea's parliament building

The events in the region have heightened tensions with neighbouring Russia, which on Thursday scrambled fighter jets to patrol borders while Ukraine's newly formed government pledged to prevent a national breakup with the strong backing of the West.

Moscow reportedly granted shelter to Ukraine's fugitive president, Viktor Yanukovych, who was said to be holed up in a luxury government retreat and to have scheduled a news conference Friday near the Ukrainian border. As gunmen wearing unmarked camouflage uniforms erected a sign reading "Crimea is Russia" in the provincial capital, Ukraine's interim prime minister declared that the Black Sea territory "has been and will be a part of Ukraine."

Main opposition leader should be excluded from government, U.S. diplomat says in leaked conversation

Thomson Reuters Posted: Feb 06, 2014 4:59 PM ET Last Updated: Feb 07, 2014 10:45 AM ET

A conversation between a State Department official and the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine posted on YouTube revealed a frank exchange on U.S. strategy for a political transition in that country, including a crude swipe at the European Union.

In the audio posted on Tuesday, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland told U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt she doesn't think Vitaly Klitschko, the boxer-turned-politician who is a main opposition leader, should be in a new government.

"So I don't think Klitsch (Klitschko) should go into the government," she said in the recording, which appeared to describe events that occurred in late January. "I don't think it's necessary. I don't think it's a good idea."

Nuland met on Thursday with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to discuss a solution to anti-government protests that have swept the former Soviet republic since November. They discussed political reform and possible further negotiations between Yanukovich and opposition leaders, his website said.

U.S. officials, while declining to confirm the tape's contents, did not dispute its authenticity.

"I did not say it was not authentic," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a news briefing.

She said Nuland had apologized to her EU counterparts for the reported comments.

The leaked conversation appeared certain to embarrass the United States and fuel charges that the Ukrainian opposition is being manipulated by Washington.

In the YouTube audio, Nuland and Pyatt are heard discussing strategies to work with the three main opposition figures: Klitschko, Arseny Yatsenyuk, former Ukrainian economy minister, and Oleh Tyahnybok, far-right nationalist opposition leader.

Nuland referred to getting the United Nations involved in a political solution in Kyiv.

"So that would be great, I think, to help glue this thing and have the UN help glue it and you know ... fuck the EU," she said in the recording, which was accompanied by still pictures of people mentioned in the call.

Pyatt responded: "Exactly. And I think we've got to do something to make it stick together because you can be pretty
sure that if it does start to gain altitude, the Russians will be working behind the scenes to try to torpedo it."
