NEW YORK - A celebrity telethon for Hurricane Katrina survivors took an unexpected turn when outspoken rapper Kanye West went off script during the live broadcast, declaring America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."

"A Concert for Hurricane Relief," which aired on NBC and other networks Friday night, began, fittingly enough, with jazz from New Orleans natives

Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis.

The host was NBC News' Matt Lauer, who invited viewers to contribute to the

American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by phone or on the Web. Some 18 presenters performed musical numbers or gave information on the tragedy's huge scope.

Since the hurricane, people have displayed a massive outpouring of charity. Total donations passed the $200 million mark by Friday, four days after the storm slammed into the Gulf Coast. The bulk of those funds were collected by the Red Cross, which said it has raised $196.9 million from individuals and corporations.

Appearing two-thirds through the program, West took the government to task, claiming "

George Bush doesn't care about black people."

Comedian

Mike Myers was paired with West for a 90-second segment that began with Myers speaking of Katrina's devastation. Then, to Myers' evident surprise, West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

While allowing that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can," West — who delivered an emotional outburst at the American Music Awards after he was snubbed for an award — declared that government authorities are intentionally dragging their feet on aid to the Gulf Coast. Without getting specific, he added, "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

After he stated, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.

more narrow minded thinking :P

1. the first rule in the national guard book is don't shoot unless fired upon. you can't blame em really, they had over 400 police officers quit in one day because they were tired of being shot at...

2. i've seen PLENTY of black families on TV being protraied as victims. the thing he's over looking here is the fact that new orleans has like a 70% black population. so when people start looting i wonder what the percentage of the looters are black? :D

what's funny, is i just made 5 bucks, i bet my friend someone would find a way to bitch at bush about the hurricane :D

True, in the news reports I've seen on TV most people are black. A few white and hispanic are portryed occasionally. Not to be racist but yeah, if the population is mostly black, most of the looters will be black. You have to admit though that Bush/American Goverment did take their time, I believe that Bush was on vacations (again :D )

just a side note but everyone in congress was on vacation. and i dont call bushes vacation a vacation. he freaken works too much. clintons where in hawaii for their vacation.

there is plans that neither the mayor of N. O. nor the governer followed. at the least the governor blanco should resign for not doing anything.

N. O. is a welfare city. ei socialism. history says socialism DOES NOT work.

um.... 7 days for national guard to show up...what you all were invaded by an army instead of a hurricane???? instead of a hurricane. face it, if the polititions allowed the people that knew what to do right away...read this as getting prepared 3 days before instead of only letting them begin 3 or 4 days after the hurricane things would have been different. the head of FEMA had no idea what was going on at ground zero....was his cnn feed not working...come on guys that guy was incompitent and should be fired. Anderson cooper on cnn a few days ago had to chastise a senator for telling him how good a rescue job was being done and just how fantasically organized things were and at that point Mr cooper blasted her and had to tell her no rescue ops were being allowed as yet and the polititions such as herself had not given the ok yet...just look at what the mayor of that city has to say about the govoner and her lack of will to begin what needed to be done. yes things are running better now but that is because the national guard are making the decisions now and not the stupid polititions and burocrats

exactly, if fema and everyone else would've charged in as soon as it happened it would have been a violation of independent state rights. the governor of each state needs to request federal support before any federal agency can take action. i keep hearing all these people saying "bush was on vacation for 3 days after it happened, he should've been sending all kinds of support in there", but what they don't mention is that during those three days he was pressing the governor to request federal support, at which she would respond "let us evaluate the situation some more..."

they bash bush for not doing what he's not allowed to do, then bitch that he violates our rights if he does. it's a lose/lose situation everytime, these democrats are taking EVERY advantage possible to bash him, and it's kinda sick that they use a disaster like this as a political bush bashing tool :sneaky:

pps: Ron Stweart, your a dumb ass, his little rant on the daily show a few days back was fucking retarded. he had no idea what the hell he was talking about...

exactly nsane...thats what i am getting at...someone somewhere from ignorance (lack of Knowledge) prevented aid from ariving in a timely manner...and yes it is looking more and more like the govoner...and it is too bad the polititions try to score brownie points for and against each other at times like this.

I do politics and what nsane just said, made me look at it from another level. Maybe because i dont understand fully yet but i just assumed bush didnt help, goign with what the media was saying, ie bush didnt help, bush was slow blah blah, i didnt even know the govenor had to first request support before any aid was given.

Ah wells, learn something new everyday, i guess im going to have to sto pbelieveing the biased single view articles from the media and think out of the box.

Im so narrowminded
