Switched back to UDefrag but quick question about something you might have missed...

For the settings for both the Archive/ High Performance, which option should be selected;

Fast Placement

Very Fast Placement

Strict Placement

Yeah, I guess I missed that, I'm sure I mentioned it though, but it seems I didn't :s

A quick use of Ctrl+F found me what I wanted ;)

  • How often should I defrag?
I recommend doing a Folder/File name defrag with Strict Placement for HP and Fast Placement for A once every month(if you do not install much programs in a month, more than 5) and running a Folder/File name defrag with Fast Placement for HP and Fast Placement for A or a Fragmented files only defrag once every 1/2 week(s).

;)

Hello and thanks for the great guide! I was just wondering if there were plans to update this to include which folders to include in archive and performance settings for Windows 7. As I was going through them, I realized that some of the folders have changed like dllcache is no longer in system32.

There are, but they won't be done any time soon ;)

Should you have any suggestions I'd be happy to listen to them ;)

Old thread, but can I suggest adding to the archive:

*.log (or at least *kb*.log for all the Windows update logs)

*.tmp

*.old

All of these can be found in the C:\Windows folder among other places.

Thanks for your suggestions. I would not recommend having all .log files inside your archives though(the *kb*.log files are ok though).

I've spent much time thinking about in which area .tmp files belong but I never quite figured it out, so I decided not to include them in my guide. Why do you think they should be in the archive region?

I agree on *.old ;)

I suggested .tmp as they seem to generally be files which have been left behind by apps. If they are not in use, they are probably prime candidates for deletion.

Yeah I actually agree. Before I do a defrag even of simple files.. DEFINITELY before I do a high performance.. I spend a day using my most used programs..and I clean my hard drive up...get rid of un-necessary junk..that kind of thing. That way the only thing that is being structured for high performance will be files that are system and program related not user.. unless they are files that are repetitively used by me or an application..

It doesn't really, I could write a little note about it but I'll do that as soon as the new version of UD is released.

Little note:

Sometimes UD tends to place the boot-time files a little too much to the middle of your HD(whilst it should be more to the outside) so you could manually adjust the placing to your liking. The MFT size may generally also be lowered.

When is the new version of UD coming out?

Good question, they're known for their inaccurate timeframes on releases :P

How do I do this? UD really put the MFT in the middle and the boot time was really affected negatively.

I don't have UD installed on my Windows 7 system yet, so I'll describe what I remember:

In UD go to Options, then to the Boot defrag tab, then you can select at 'which cluster to start', you can manually adjust the number, make the number so that there's a little space(like 5 GB) between your files on the outside of the disk(high performance and 'normal') and the MFT(and system files).

How do you know how much 5GB is? Set the MFT to 1GB(what I have) or 2GB and then multiply the room it takes on the bar by 5 or 2.5 ;)

I set my UD up again.

Now, I got 2 partitions, C and G

now I set UD up with this guide,

now first I defragment my C-drive, (only windows and some main programs, why ? gonna create an image file of my C-drive, to make things easier when I want a new install (instead of formattting, installing xp again, and updates, software and all the rest), that's done, then I go on and defragment my G-drive.

Now, when both of them are done (first C, then G), I check my C-drive again, and it's fragmented again (10%, so not a little bit, at least I think that's a lot (dunno if so))

Anyway,

is the defragmenting of G causing drive C to get fragmented again ?

If so, what the hell can I do against it ? As I ain't got a clue on this matter.

I hope someone can help me on this matter.

Thanks anyway

This shouldn't happen, which files does it show as fragmented?

I think any defrag program you use it needs enough space on the drive to defrag it properly.

This is what I see:

C-disk

ah, you can click on those it seems, well, seems to be some exe-files coming back in most of those red boxes ...

soms .msi-files too ... Inbox too, .rbf files

G-disk

ps: 320 GB HDD, so plenty of space (fresh install, 39 GB used it says)

ps2: used auto option to defragment (C: 100% most frequently used data, 0% to least) perhaps this is the cause ?

G drive is not much fragmented. About C drive , it's interesting. Can you determine the name or size of the files that are not defragmented? It's less possible that the files would be locked for not even allowin UD to defragment it.

but after defragging C-disk it's fine, but when I did the G-disk too (afterwards) things seem to be messed up ...

euhm, what exactly would you like to know ? those red ones ? I posted them in my previous post, if that' not what you wanted, then what is it you want ? :shy:

edit: you posted before my edit I think ;)

OK. I'm sorry. C drive is more fragmented than G drive.

about that auto option, I'm still a bit new to UD but shought will tell you.

As far as the red boxes are concerned, use Windows Defragmentor or whatever you say, and click analyze and see the view report. I wanna know the size and names/destination of the files.
