  3. Microsoft today embraced Google’s Chromium open source project for Edge development on the desktop. The company also announced it is decoupling the browser updates from Windows 10 updates, and that Edge is coming to all supported versions of Windows and to macOS. Microsoft launched Edge in July 2015 as the default browser for, and exclusive to, Windows 10. But it never saw much adoption. Sure, Microsoft claimed Edge had 330 million active devices back in September 2017, but it never did reveal an active user figure beyond “hundreds of millions” (Google said Chrome passed 1 billion active users in May 2015). Edge has 4.34 percent market share today, according to the latest figures from Net Applications. So Microsoft wants to make some big changes, which it says will happen “over the next year or so.” The first preview builds of the Chromium-powered Edge will arrive in early 2019, according to Microsoft. Chromium-based Microsoft Edge Adopting the Chromium project means a lot more for Microsoft. The Edge rendering engine EdgeHTML will be swapped out for the Blink rendering engine. The Chakra JavaScript engine will be swapped out for V8. Microsoft will even take some of the UI stack, for use on non-Windows 10 platforms. Also worth noting: Microsoft is not forking Chromium. Microsoft hopes moving to Chromium will “create better web compatibility for our customers” and “less fragmentation of the web for all web developers.” The former is certainly true, as the Edge web platform will thus become aligned with web standards and other Chromium-based browsers. The latter is not true in the short term (plenty of testing will be needed to accommodate the switch) but it is likely in the long term, as developers will have one fewer browser to explicitly test against. No longer wasting resources on building Edge’s backend will likely turn out to be a big win for Microsoft. It is a lot of work to constantly update a browser engine to be standards-compliant and compatible with the actual web. Microsoft has decided to let the open source community do that instead, which it will participate in, so it can focus on improving the browser itself. Again, Edge isn’t changing significantly. This is an “under the hood” transformation, and most Edge users won’t notice anything significantly different — save for some sites working as expected. The future of EdgeHTML and Chakra Edge uses Blink/Chromium on Android and WebKit/WKWebView on iOS. Thus, when Edge on desktop moves to Blink and V8, the main use case for EdgeHTML and Chakra will disappear overnight. Windows 10 apps that use EdgeHTML and/or Chakra will be able to keep using them, according to Microsoft. But, Microsoft will also eventually let app developers leverage the Chromium-based solution that Edge will use. This will likely impact regular apps that render web content but also Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), which are essentially mobile websites that mimic native apps. App developers will thus be able to choose to keep using the legacy option or switch to Chromium. Microsoft says it has no plans to stop maintaining EdgeHTML and Chakra, although if usage were to decline, developers could expect them to hit end of support eventually. Chrome extensions In addition to better web compatibility, Edge users stand to benefit from support for Chrome extensions. Microsoft expects that it will be very easy for developers to bring their Chrome extensions to Edge. It might even be the case that it requires no work at all in most cases, but it’s too early for the company to say so definitively. Microsoft’s intention is to support existing Chrome extensions in Edge, but how exactly this will work remains to be seen. Keep in mind that for years now, Google has been locking down the Chrome Web Store and Chrome extensions in general — Microsoft will have to be careful with its solution. All supported versions of Windows So far, all this largely makes sense, but Microsoft also wants to port Edge to all supported versions of Windows. Edge is no longer going to be a Windows 10-only affair. That means Edge is coming to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1. For Windows 10, this means the Chromium-based Edge and future updates is coming to Windows 10 version 1607, version 1703, version 1709, version 1803, and version 1809. Those are all supported versions of Windows, so they’ll be getting the latest version of Edge until Microsoft ends support. Microsoft also currently supports Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server version 1709, Windows Server version 1803, Windows Server version 1809, and Windows Server 2019. The company hasn’t yet said if the latest version of Edge is coming there too. This is a massive undertaking that one can only justify through a corporate lens. It’s about letting IT departments offer a heterogeneous browser environment. Microsoft wants everyone on the latest version of Windows, but for those that cannot, or refuse to, upgrade, it has decided to bring the latest Edge to them. That means bringing Edge to older versions of Windows, including older versions of Windows 10. Within major organizations, there are computers running all sorts of Windows versions, and right now only a single one can get the latest version of Edge. macOS If you thought supporting old Windows versions was nuts, your jaw will drop when you hear Microsoft also wants to bring Edge to macOS. This is bizarre for several reasons, not even including that Microsoft ceased development of Internet Explorer for Mac in June 2003 and Apple killed Safari for Windows in July 2012. But the same heterogenous environment thinking applies: Microsoft wants all devices in an organization using the latest Edge, and that requires getting Macs onboard. Indeed, Microsoft doesn’t expect to get a lot of Mac users switching to Edge, the company said. Instead, the company simply wants to make it easier for more developers, many of whom use Macs, to test against Edge. Bringing Edge to macOS is about developers, not market share. More frequent updates Edge is updated every six months. Chrome and Firefox, meanwhile, are updated every six weeks. Even if you do have the latest Windows 10 version, Edge updates today are tied to Windows 10 updates, and half a year is a long time on the web. It’s a long time to wait for compatibility fixes, performance improvements, and new features. Could Edge get more frequent updates than Chrome and Firefox? I’m not holding my breath. But Microsoft does say that agility will be a focus going forward and does expect “a more frequent cadence” than the current six-month wait. Chrome updates hit Windows, Mac, and Linux all on the same day, while Firefox updates hit Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android on the same day. Microsoft wants the version of Edge on Windows and Mac to be the same, but we’re hearing it’s too early to commit to same-day updates across all supported versions of Windows and macOS. Chromium contributions Microsoft says it intends to become a “significant contributor” to the Chromium project. The company will try to improve Chromium not just for Edge, but for other browsers as well, and not just for PCs, but for other devices too. The priority will, however, be web platform enhancements to make Chromium-based browsers better on Windows devices. Microsoft stands to benefit if the web works well on Windows, as the impact trickles down to its customers, partners, and the overall business. Last month, Microsoft was spotted making contributions to the Chromium project for ARM-based Windows devices. The thought at the time was that Chrome was being ported to Windows 10 on ARM, but now we know Microsoft was thinking bigger. (Chromium-based browsers are 32-bit only, meaning they run emulated and negatively impact battery life. Microsoft wants to fix for all Chromium-based browsers, including Chrome and Edge.) Microsoft intends to continue work on ARM64 support, but it also hopes to improve Chromium’s web accessibility and take advantage of other hardware features like touch support. Indeed, Edge is the only major browser with a 100 percent HTML5Accessbility score and is known for having solid touch scrolling performance. In fact, Microsoft doesn’t want to switch to Chromium until some of that functionality has been contributed to the project. That way, Edge won’t lose features when the switch happens next year. 4. Microsoft today announced a few deadlines for developers who have built Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps. The Microsoft Store will stop accepting new apps with Windows Phone 8.x or earlier or Windows 8/8.1 packages (XAP and APPX) on October 31, 2018. In July 2019, Microsoft will stop distributing app updates to Windows Phone 8.x or earlier, and in July 2023, Microsoft will stop distributing app updates to Windows 8/8.1 devices. At that time, Microsoft says updates will only be made available to customers using Windows 10 devices — although who knows what Windows will look like in five years. (Don’t confuse the Microsoft Store with Microsoft’s physical retail stores. Microsoft rebranded the Windows Store as the Microsoft Store in October 2017.) Microsoft has given Windows app developers the following timeline to help them plan: October 31, 2018 — Microsoft will stop accepting new app submissions with Windows Phone 8.x or earlier or Windows 8/8.1 packages (XAP or APPX). This will not affect existing apps with packages targeting Windows Phone 8.x or earlier and/or Windows 8/8.1 and you can continue to submit updates until the next corresponding deadline. July 1, 2019 — Microsoft will stop distributing app updates to Windows Phone 8.x or earlier devices. Developers will still be able to publish updates to all apps (including those with Windows Phone 8.x or earlier packages), but these updates will only be made available to Windows 10 devices. July 1, 2023 — Microsoft will stop distributing app updates to Windows 8/8.1 devices. Developers will still be able to publish updates to all apps (including those with Windows 8/8.1 packages), but these updates will only be made available to Windows 10 devices. Microsoft is encouraging affected developers to port their apps to the universal Windows platform (UWP). UWP allows developers to build a single app that changes based on your device and screen size. One app can work on your Windows 10 computer, Windows 10 tablet, Windows 10 Mobile smartphone (you can skip this one), Xbox One console, and HoloLens headset. Source
  5. Aero Glass integrates into the the Desktop Windows Manager without compromising any system components. It uses the native Direct3D device to render the effects and colors. You can change the transparency and base colors directly from the Windows Colorization Control Panel. This utility returns the complete glass effect into windows frames. - Apply glass look to windows borders - Blur the content behind the borders to improve UI experience - Change amount of transparency in Control panels directly - Change inactive windows borders color - Skin windows borders (add glow, shadows etc.) without changing Windows theme - Fully native including MSStyle themes and DWM API compatibility - Low resources usage Glass look Your windows will be rendered with transparent borders. This look allows you to see what is behind the border. The key element is the blurring of content behind the glass borders to prevent it from being too clear and disturbing. The result is very smart window border! Fully native The utility is completely integrated into Desktop Window Manager without breaking any system protection or modifying system files. All rendering is done via native Direct3D device. Any colorization settings adjusted in Windows Control Panels are respected. Use color intensity slider to adjust the amount of the transparency. No custom skinning engine used. Due to the native nature of this utility your Windows theme is composited together with the glass effect. All features controlled through DWM API (e.g. DwmEnableBlurBehindWindow or DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea) are supported including the taskbar or custom Start menu blur effect. Low resources usage! This library tries to utilize all DWM resources as much as possible to minimize RAM and VRAM usage. No redudant objects are created, no background service is running (Win8 only; Win8.1 version needs light-weight background process to correctly load user's settings). The result is light-weight library which behaves exactly in the same way as Aero Glass in Windows 7 did. No performance degradation! Theme your windows! You can change the look of your windows borders completely without touching your Windows theme or using unsigned theme. This allows you to bring back several effects such as window shadow, caption glow effect, rounded borders or simply change the appearence of caption buttons. 6. WPD v1.2.855 Hi there! If you are here you have probably heard about rather tricky and complex Windows 10 privacy settings and how much data it can collect without user’s knowledge or consent. So, we have tried to resolve this problem and created WPD – a tweaker that contains all main settings in one place! You can customize Group Policy, Services and Tasks, responsible for data collection and sending, as you like. And furthermore, if you want, you can block a bunch of Microsoft's ip's to which data is sent. Disable Windows features and make various tweaks Wrapped in a clean and attractive interface, this program provides you with intuitive and practical options for tweaking your computer, whether you're running Windows 7 or 10. It doesn't require installation so you can copy the downloaded package to a USB flash drive to directly launch it on any PC without setup. Administrative rights are required, though. The main app menu is brought up to the screen at startup, allowing you to access the privacy-related features, firewall settings, apps to uninstall, or other tweaks to make. Configure privacy, firewall and app settings When it comes to privacy matters, you can deactivate the steps recorder, advertising ID, search companion, telemetry, Windows Error Reporting, handwriting auto learning, OneDrive (for file storage), and others. Some of the options displayed here might seem confusing. However, you don't have to look up definitions on the web since WPD shows descriptions in tooltips next to each option. Otherwise, you can disable everything listed here with the click of a button. As far as firewall settings are concerned, Windows Privacy Dashboard can be instructed to block Windows telemetry, third-party apps and Windows Updates from establishing Internet connections. If you change your mind and wish to reset these options to default, you can simply delete the newly created rules. Uninstall unwanted apps and perform tweaks Only Modern UI apps can be uninstalled with the aid of this utility, whether they came bundled with the operating system or got installed from other sources. Lastly, the tweaker gives you the possibility to hide sync provider notifications, allow the swap file to be cleared during restart, and prevent apps from using your camera, microphone and other devices. Taking everything into consideration, WPD turns out to be a straightforward and useful system tweaker. It enabled and disabled system settings without any issues on Windows 10 in our tests. WPD is free, totally portable, has a nice user-friendly interface, and doesn't contain any advertisement or malicious code. Currently we don't have a code signing certificate, so Widnows SmartScreen might be little nervous, just skip it. Privacy management Customize Group Policy, Services, Tasks and other settings responsible for data collection and transmission. Firewall rules Block telemetry IP's using firewall rules from the @crazy-max repository. 7. WARNING Released by Microsoft without documentation, it's safe to hide this patch if you don't want Windows 10 or its related updates There are reports this morning about a new patch, KB 3150513, appearing on Windows 8.1 systems -- and probably lurking on Windows 10 systems, too. Microsoft has not posted a KB article, and there's no notification about the patch in the official Windows Update list. Sound familiar? [ Your one-stop shop for Microsoft knowledge: Everything you need to know about Windows 10, in a handy PDF. Download it today! | Survive and thrive with the new OS: The ultimate Windows 10 survivor kit. | Stay up on key Microsoft technologies with the Windows newsletter. ] Fortunately, poster PeterBisco on the Microsoft Answers forum, has an explanation (originally posted on the Polish forum): I have made a look into Windows8.1 version of this update and found this: This update doesn't contain binary code. It just contains new data for AppRaiser (Windows 10 Compatibility tool). It contains files as: hwcompat_th1.txt hwcompat_th2.txt hwexclude_rs1.txt hwexclude_th1.txt hwexclude_th2.txt wucompat.txt appraiser.sdb hwcompat_rs1.txt appraiser_data.ini appraiser_telemetryrunlist.xml So if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, and you have all the Windows 10 related updates installed (e.g. KB3035583, KB2952664, etc.) then you are safe to install this patch. If you don't want Windows 10 or its related updates and you have hide them, you can hide this one as well, if you wish. AppRaiser is the Windows 10 compatibility appraiser, which you can download and run manually. It's the program that's supposed to tell you if you're running any software or have any hardware that will mess with the Windows 10 upgrade. Hiding this patch sounds like good advice to me. The move is surprising, given that mainstream support for Windows 7 ended a few years ago, and it ended for Windows 8.1 earlier this year. Both operating systems are now in extended support, which means that they should only be receiving fixes at this point. Microsoft describes Defender ATP as "a unified endpoint security platform that helps stop breaches." With less than two years to go for Windows 7 extended support, the company says that it knows that many businesses might have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 10 PCs, as they're in the process of upgrading their organization. It will be optional, with customers having the ability to add ATP Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) functionality to their devices this summer. Obviously, it can run side-by-side with third-party antivirus solutions, but Microsoft says that it works better with Defender Antivirus, so administrators can see malware detections and possible solutions from the same console. The feature will be available for the older operating systems this summer for "customers moving to Windows 10." There will also be a preview this spring, as noted by ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley. Source
  10. WPD v1.1.582 Hi there! 14. Been using Windows Ten (10) pro for a short while now and have finally accepted it working how I want it to, except a couple of items, cheesing me off! Biometrics, is the problem. I get the error, ''To use this product, Windows Biometric Framework must be enabled. Windows 10.'' when trying to install, Protector Suite 2012 v5.9.7.7279 x64. I have run services.msc and disabled Windows biometrics, also run, and enabled biometrics in templates. I have read various opinions on-line, all similar to my ways of trying to run this application and still not working. Any ideas?
  15. Bypass For Windows Update Lock For Next-Gen Processors Found A first workaround for the blocking of Windows Update on Windows 7 or 8.1 PCs with next-generation processors has been discovered. Microsoft blocked the delivery of Windows Updates recently to Windows 7 and 8.1 devices powered by a next-generation processor. The company announced the support change in January 2017. Broken down to the essentials, it means that Intel Kaby Lake and AMD Bristol Ridge processors are only support by Windows 10, and not older versions of Windows. To hammer that home, Microsoft made the decision to block Windows Update on Windows 7 or 8.1 PCs with those next generation processors. The company introduced patches, KB4012218 and KB4012219 for instance, which introduced process generation and hardware support detection on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems. Windows users who run Windows Update get the unsupported hardware error prompt when they try to scan for and download the latest patches for their -- still supported -- operating system. Bypass for Windows Update lock for next-gen processors GitHub user zeffy made the decision to take a closer look at how the actual blocking is done on the operating system level. What he did was the following: Download the Patch KB4012218 from Microsoft. Extract the content of the MSU file using the expand command line tool. Expand basically extracts all files that are part of an update file so that you can analyze each individually. This resulted in a long list of files. He used PowerShell to filter the files for anything starting with "wu" to filter out Windows Update related files. He then ran diff tools to compare the binaries of the files in the new update file with those on the actual operating system. He discovered the dynamic link library wuaueng.dll, and found the two functions IsCPUSupported(void) and IsDeviceServiceable(void) in it. Now that he found the culprits that blocked the installation of updates on machines with next generation processors, he came up with a solution for that. His preferred solution jumps over the whole "IsDeviceServiceable(void)" body so that Windows Update is notified that the CPU on the machine is supported. The solution requires the patching of the dll file. He has uploaded the patched files for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to the GitHub project page. The source code has been made available there as well for you to check. The patches come as scripts that you just need to run to make the necessary changes. Windows Update should work just like before then even on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 systems with next generation processors Attention: it is recommended that you create a backup of the wuaueng.dll file before you patch it. Even better, create a backup of the system partition just to be on the safe side of things. One caveat of the method is that any new version of wuaueng.dll that Microsoft releases requires new patching. Microsoft may device other means to block updates on those systems as well in the future. (via Sergey) Now You: What's your take on Microsoft blocking updates for customer systems? Source
  16. Windows XP Has More Users than Windows Vista and Windows 8 Combined, Avast Says Avast provides Windows usage data in latest report While it’s important to note that these figures come from computers running Avast, they do align with the statistics provided by research firms whose main activity is monitoring operating system usage, so there’s a good chance these are accurate. First and foremost, there’s leader Windows 7. According to Avast, the operating system launched in 2009 is currently powering more than 56 million computers where its antivirus product is installed, and this means a share of no less than 48.35 percent. Windows 10 is growing, the security firm says, and it managed to reach a share of 30.46 percent, which accounts for a little over 35 million devices running Avast security software. Windows XP still a super-popular choice But what’s a little more worrying for everyone, including here Microsoft, users, and Avast itself, is that Windows XP, which was launched in 2001 and no longer receives security updates since April 2014, is still running on more than 6.5 million computers. This means that it has a share of 5.64 percent, more than Windows 8 (2.51 percent) and Windows Vista (2.08 percent) combined. Windows 8 was launched in 2012 as Microsoft’s new revolution, but its small market share is mostly the result of most people choosing the free upgrade to Windows 8.1. The OS launched one year later has a share of 10.96 percent, which represents 12.7 million PCs running Avast. For what it’s worth, Windows Vista is also reaching end of support next month, so users who are still running this OS, and there are at least 2 million according to Avast, should already start planning the upgrade. Windows 10 is the safest bet right now, as Windows 7 itself is also projected to reach EOL in January 2020. Source

  18. Microsoft wants to re-enter China with custom version of Windows 10 Microsoft has completed development of a Windows 10 version specifically tailored for the Chinese market, a company official revealed, as the software giant has been working with local authorities to address security concerns in the operating system. Alain Crozier, CEO of Microsoft Greater China, explained in a recent statement that Microsoft’s local joint venture, C&M Information Technologies, which was formed in September 2016 with state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corp, developed a Windows 10 version with custom security features in order to comply with the country’s requirements. This Windows 10 version makes it possible for Microsoft to install the operating system on government computers, after Windows was banned by local authorities following information leaks from whistleblower Edward Snowden in the United States. “We have already developed the first version of the Windows 10 government secure system. It has been tested by three large enterprise customers,” Microsoft’s official was quoted as saying by China Daily. “We have worked extensively to make it secure and controllable. We are now ready to serve the market.” Microsoft in China Microsoft’s operations in China hit several roadblocks, mostly after the government accused the company of trying to spy on users and country officials with its software. Windows 8 was banned on government computers due to concerns that the operating system could hide backdoors used as part of surveillance programs, while the company’s offices in the country were raided by prosecutors as part of anti-trust investigations whose purpose remained vague. Microsoft, on the other hand, has always expressed its intention to work with Chinese authorities on addressing these concerns, and the custom version of Windows 10 boasting security features specifically tailored to meet China requirements is living proof that the software giant doesn’t want to stay away from of the largest markets worldwide. If the government approves this version of Windows 10 and installs it on its systems, adoption of the operating system is very likely to increase in the country, as most agencies would most likely do the same and migrate to Windows 10 in the next months. 21. Here's my scenario: I have a laptop with 3 OS on it. Windows XP, Windows 8, Windows 7, and 4th partition for files. Whenever I listen to music or watch and listen to Youtube videos, and the like, I notice that the sound is louder when I play it on Windows XP than on Windows 7/8. I have played the same set of music files, Youtube videos on all 3 OS but the result is still the same. The volume on the 3 OS and on the videos are all set to 100% but still, when I play them on Windows XP, I had to lower down the volume not to cause too much noise. I have installed the required audio drivers for all 3 OS and all OS are Windows updates up-to-date. Whenever I watch and listen on Windows 7/8, I often look at the volume indicator to see if it is already maxed [or 100%] and is thinking if there is any way to make the sound/audio louder. All OS are on their own partition so the settings and software are independent from one another. Just to compare, 100% volume on Windows 7/8 seems to be around 50% on Windows XP even though they are using the same exact hardware, all OS on the same laptop. When I'm on Windows 7/8, I will need to connect additional speakers to get a louder sound/audio but when I'm on Windows XP, the built-in speakers are sufficient enough. Is there any setting that I need to check or adjust so that sound/audio volume on Windows 7/8 will be at par or as loud as on Windows XP? I'm not sure if my computer specs matter but I'll just mention it anyway. 22. Microsoft and China have had a stressful relationship recently as the two seem unable to see eye-to-eye over the Windows operating system. With China recently saying that Windows 8 should not be used there due to Microsoft’s connection with the US government, Microsoft is now fighting back and is using social media to combat these claims. It all started with China wanting Microsoft to extend the support of Windows XP as that platform is used heavily in the country. But, the reason it is used so much is largely because of widespread piracy, and Microsoft has said that 9 out of 10 copies being used in that country have been acquired illegally. With Microsoft not backing down on dropping support for XP, China started tossing mud at Windows 8. The country banned the use of the platform on government computers and made claims about backdoors and other allegations of collusion with the US government. While Microsoft knows that if any of this were true, it would do irreparable harm to its image and as of now, it has not been firmly established that the company has given the NSA or any other entity access through a ‘backdoor’ into its platforms. Microsoft has taken to its Weibo account to combat China’s claims and posted the image that you see at the top of this post. The five points are translated and broken down below and you can see the full image here: Microsoft has never assisted any government in an attack of another government or clients.Microsoft has never provided any government the authority to directly visit our products or services.Microsoft has never provided any so-called "Backdoor" into its products or services.Microsoft has never provided the data or info of our clients to the U.S. Govt. or National Security Agency.Microsoft has never concealed any requests from any government for information about its clients. These claims attack all of the key points China has made about Windows 8 and Microsoft’s alleged cooperation with the US government. Microsoft clearly wants China to move to another platform besides Windows XP because so many of the PCs in China run illegal copies of the OS. If Microsoft is able to get these users to buy legitimate copies of new versions of Windows, it will significantly help the company’s bottom line. But for now, Windows XP usage in China still remains high but seeing that the OS is no longer receiving support, it’s only a matter of time until these machines become vulnerable and are exploited by botnets or infected with ransomware. Once this occurs, these users will have no choice but to update their OS to a more modern platform. Source: http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-fights-back-calls-out-china-on-its-windows-8-claims
  23. Microsoft has taken heat every time it tried to end support for Windows XP, but finally almost 13 years after it was released, Microsoft has flipped the switch and stopped delivering system updates to XP users. Well, mostly. There have been some angry rumblings, but consumers seem to be coping, and large customers like business and governments can buy extended support licenses. So everything is fine? Not from the perspective of the Chinese government, which apparently has trust issues after the end of XP support. New rules announced last week ban the use of Windows 8 on government PCs. Microsoft has a complicated history with Windows in China. PC sales are roughly the same as the US, but more than a third are still running XP. There are no official numbers on government IT platforms, but it’s safe to say XP’s share is even higher there. What is remarkable about the Chinese software market is the sheer number of pirated Windows installs. In spite of all those PC sales, Microsoft only sees about 5% of the revenue in China that it does in the US. It’s no secret that piracy is rampant in the Chinese consumer electronics market, and that’s probably one of the main reasons XP is still so widely used. Newer versions of Windows introduced tougher anti-piracy measures that require more fiddling to bypass, and are easier to trip in the future. The Chinese government has suggested in the past that Microsoft should lower the price of Windows instead of combating piracy. The block on Windows 8 was enacted as part of a notice on energy-saving procedures posted on the Central Government Procurement Center website. It was certainly an odd way to announce the ban of a major operating system. The official Xinhua news agency elaborated on the ban, saying it was being put in place to ensure future security after Microsoft ended support for Windows XP… after 13 years. Apparently the Chinese government doesn’t want to be in a similar situation after buying another “foreign OS.” That raises the question, of course, what OS is China going to use on government computers? China’s Kylin OS. It was originally based on FreeBSD, but now it’s derived from Ubuntu The Chinese propaganda machine might simply be trying to spin the end of XP support as some failing of the foreign software market in an effort to jumpstart a local alternative. There are a few Chinese Linux distros like StartOS and Kylin, but usage of these operating systems is still low. It’s more likely the Chinese government is working on its own version of desktop Linux to go along with the new Linux-based mobile OS known as China Operating System (COS). Microsoft is no doubt unhappy to hear about the ban on Windows 8 in the Chinese government, as if that platform needed any more bad press. With most Windows machines in China running pirated versions of the OS, it’s not like Microsoft is about to see profits fall off a cliff. Still, having the Chinese government actively discourage the use of Windows could make it hard for Microsoft to gain a foothold with the growing Chinese middle class who might have the means to pay for software.
