  1. Police Wanted to (But Couldn’t) Break into User’s Password Manager Backdoors bundled into software and hardware products sold in the United States have always been a controversial topic. And now, there’s a high chance they make the headlines once again following a failed law enforcement attempt to access the login details of a suspected criminal. The Drug Enforcement Administration, or the DEA, reached out to LastPass, the maker of one of the most advanced password managers out there, asking for the details of a user called Stephan Caamano. The man, according to official documents, was under investigation for trafficking a counterfeit drug and money laundering. The police believed that Caamano was storing all his logins and passwords in LastPass, so they wanted to break into his accounts to look for more information that could then be used as evidence in court. But when asking LastPass to provide access to the suspect’s data, all they got was a big “nope, we can’t do it.”Strong encryption used by password managersThis is because, as LastPass itself explained, password managers like this one do not store encryption keys on company’s servers, as all the data is decrypted on the user’s device. In other words, they can only be accessed from the device where the password manager is installed and only when the master password is provided. “User passwords stored on LogMeIn's servers are only done so in an encrypted format. The only way they get decrypted is on the user’s side, and the way that happens—the decryption key—is the user’s master password (used to log into LastPass), which is never received by or available to LogMeIn/LastPass. In other words, we have no means of decrypting user password information on our side, and thus, we are unable to provide these passwords,” a LastPass spokesperson explained as per this Forbes report. LastPass isn’t the only the password manager that’s impossible to break into. Enpass, for example, stores all data locally and can sync with cloud services for easy access from multiple devices. The data, however, is locked with a master password that’s used for decryption and which isn’t recorded and stored anywhere. Once the master password is lost, there’s no way to recover it, and the data is locked forever. In this case, LastPass only provided law enforcement with the IP address of the suspect, as well as details regarding the last logins. The man pleaded not guilty and the trial is scheduled for May. 5. Abelssoft‘s KeyDepot stores every password in an encrypted safe! Everyone’s heard it before—the experts won’t let you forget it—all your passwords should use cryptic combinations of characters, be changed weekly, and absolutely never be written down. But who has the time and superhuman memory to keep track of all these passwords? KeyDepot offers a virtual “safe” for your Windows computer that securely preserves and manages all your valuable passwords. Everyday there’s more and more—our daily lives are cluttered with innumerable sensitive PINs, credit card numbers, website logins and email passwords. Using only a handful (or even less) of solutions for all these services is highly inadvisable, as it leaves one vulnerable to a catastrophic security breach, but it’s generally the only way one can remember them all. The alternative to these compromises: Abelssoft’s KeyDepot takes the myriad passwords, encrypts them, and then stores them in a virtual safe that can be accessed with a single click and a password—the last password the user need henceforth remember. Once inside his safe, one more click copies any password to the clipboard for use with its respective service. Security experts advise the use of long passwords consisting of arbitrary sequences of lower and uppercase letters, as well as numbers; KeyDepot makes this ideal attainable for regular people by automatically generating and saving such passwords with a mouse click. It also allows the printing of all passwords—but of course this should only be done in the most secure, private places. Thanks to KeyDepot, users can have the security benefits of using many long, complex passwords with the convenience of using a single one. Everything is right on your desktop. This approach is perfect for day to day use of PayPal, eBay, Amazon, iTunes, and other such services. And, with KeyDepot , it’s also no longer a problem to regularly change your passwords. Dr. Sven Abels, chief executive of Ascora GmbH: "KeyDepot is a further development and replacement of its predecessor, SecuStar. SecuStar users can switch to KeyDepot for free, and transfer their data using our relocation assistant. We rewrote SecuStar, creating KeyDepot , in order to make the program even faster, more secure and more comfortable to use." 6. Mozilla engineers have started work on a project named Lockbox that they describe as "a work-in-progress extension [...] to improve upon Firefox's built-in password management." Mozilla released the new extension for employee-use only at first, but users can install it by going to this or this links. Lockbox revamps Firefox's antiquated password management utility with a new user interface (UI). A new Firefox UI button is also included, in case users want to add a shortcut in their browser's main interface to open Lockbox without going through all the menu options. Support for a master password is included, helping users secure their passwords from unauthorized access by co-workers, family members, or others. There are no public plans on Lockbox's future at the moment, but Mozilla will most likely ship it with Test Pilot for some user testing before deciding if to deploy it in the stable branch. Firefox Test Pilot is a Firefox add-on that allows users to install, test, and vote on experimental features that may be added to Firefox in the future. Mozilla has tested several other Firefox features inside Test Pilot before [1, 2]. For example, Firefox's new built-in page screenshot utility — launched through Firefox 55 and 56 — was also tested via Test Pilot. At the moment, Mozilla engineers say Lockbox has only been tested on Firefox 57 and above and that installing on Firefox 56 or lower may not function at all. Also, there's no way to reset the Lockbox master password (at the moment). Source

  10. Popular password manager LastPass said it fixed two vulnerabilities that were found last year. The disclosure comes just ahead of a security conference where a research paper describing the problems is due to be presented. Zhiwei Li, a research scientist at Shape Security, reported the flaws to LastPass in August 2013, which were "addressed immediately," LastPass wrote on its blog. Both flaws involved "bookmarklets," which assist in filling out stored password information when LastPass's plugin can't be used, such as when using a mobile browser. One flaw could be exploited if a bookmarklet was used on a website rigged to attack it, LastPass wrote. The other vulnerability could allow an attacker to create a bogus one-time password (OTP) if a LastPass user was tricked into visiting a malicious website. The OTP attack would require a hacker to know a person's username in order to exploit it and also serve a custom attack, LastPass wrote. "Even if this was exploited, the attacker would still not have the key to decrypt user data," the company said. Zhiwei co-authored a research paper that has been accepted by the Usenix Security Symposium, which starts in San Diego on Aug. 20. The study analyzed five popular Web-based password managers: LastPass, RoboForm, My1login, PasswordBox and NeedMyPassword, all of which run in a Web browser. The researchers wrote that "in four out of the five password managers we studied, an attacker can learn a user's credentials for arbitrary websites." LastPass wrote it didn't believe anyone other than Zhiwei exploited the flaws. Still, "if you are concerned that you've used bookmarklets before September 2013 on non-trustworthy sites, you may consider changing your master password and generating new passwords, though we don't think it is necessary."
