  1. While it was initially reported that iTunes would live on in macOS 10.15, it now looks like the app will be retired, over 18 years after it was introduced by the late Steve Jobs at Macworld on January 9, 2001. Apple will be replacing iTunes with standalone Music, TV, and Podcasts apps in the next major version of macOS, expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2019 next week, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman: End of iTunes iTunes has been the way Apple users listen to music, watch movies and TV shows, hear podcasts, and manage their devices for almost two decades. This year, Apple is finally ready to move into a new era. The company is launching a trio of new apps for the Mac – Music, TV, and Podcasts – to replace iTunes. That matches Apple's media app strategy on iPhones and iPads. Without iTunes, customers can manage their Apple gadgets through the Music app. This information lines up with a recent report from 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo, who claimed that iTunes will be renamed to "Music" on the Mac. In other words, iTunes is going away and will be replaced by the new Music app, which is expected to become the new utility for syncing and managing Apple devices. Steve Jobs quote from Apple's press release about iTunes in 2001: Apple has done what Apple does best — make complex applications easy, and make them even more powerful in the process. iTunes is miles ahead of every other jukebox application, and we hope its dramatically simpler user interface will bring even more people into the digital music revolution. Here's what iTunes looked like in 2001: iTunes has attracted its fair share of criticism over the years for being bloated software, so its split into dedicated Music, TV, and Podcasts apps will be much welcomed. Earlier this week, leaked screenshots provided us with our first glimpse at what the Music and TV apps should look like on macOS 10.15. Apple is widely expected to announce iOS 13, macOS 10.15, watchOS 6, and tvOS 13 at its WWDC 2019 opening keynote on Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. MacRumors will have live coverage of the event on our website and through MacRumorsLive on Twitter, so be sure to follow along for the latest updates. Source
  2. A new class-action lawsuit claims that Apple is “intentionally and unlawfully” disclosing its customers’ iTunes listening data to third parties in violation of state privacy laws. The lawsuit from three individuals from two states, Rhode Island and Michigan, was filed Friday in a California district court, Bloomberg reported Friday. According to the lawsuit, which was published by AppleInsider, the company’s “disclosures of the Personal Listening Information of Plaintiffs and the other unnamed Class members were not only unlawful, they were also dangerous because such disclosures allow for the targeting of particularly vulnerable members of society.” The suit alleges that Apple has or is sharing data with third parties who can “supplement that information with additional sensitive personal information” that the company discloses about its customers. Many of these third parties, the suit claims, “have in turn re-disclosed plaintiffs’ and other unnamed class members’ personal listening information to other third parties for further exploitation and monetization—all without providing prior notice to or obtaining the requisite consent from anyone.” As apparent proof of the allegation, the suit points to marketing entities who sell this information. “For example, any person or entity could rent a list with the names and addresses of all unmarried, college-educated women over the age of 70 with a household income of over $80,000 who purchased country music from Apple via its iTunes Store mobile application,” the suit states. “Such a list is available for sale for approximately $136 per thousand customers listed.” Sharing data about consumers’ listening habits can reveal intimate information about them, the lawsuit claims, and can put them at risk of predatory behavior from “fraudulent telemarketers” and others looking to take advantage of vulnerable groups. The suit names at least two marketing entities that allegedly sell such lists. In addition, the lawsuit claims that Apple, without first obtaining permission from its customers, shared detailed user listening data via its developers tools. Issues with the way user listening data was being shared with developers in the past were raised by Ben Dodson on his blog in January of 2016 as well as in a bug report to the company. The suit claims that despite contacting Dodson informing him that the company was aware of the issue, Apple did not resolve it until roughly eight months later with the release of iOS 10. The class action lawsuit is being brought by the plaintiffs on behalf of other Apple customers in their respective states who “had their personal listening information disclosed to third parties by Apple without their consent.” The suit is seeking $250 each for those Apple customers in Rhode Island and $5,000 each for those in Michigan. Apple did not immediately return a request for comment. Source

  5. Criminal hackers make a lot of money targeting businesses and institutions of all kinds with phishing attacks that lead to compromised business email. While crooks may have an array of systems in place to launder the funds they steal, researchers have noticed that so-called business email compromise scammers are leaning more and more on the humble gift card. At the RSA security conference in San Francisco next Tuesday, researchers from the email defense firm Agari will present detailed findings on a Nigerian scam group the company has dubbed Scarlet Widow. Agari researchers have monitored the group since 2017, and have tracked its prolific activity back to 2015. Scarlet Widow mostly focuses on targets based in the United States and the United Kingdom, dabbling in a number of types of fraud like tax scams, property rental cons, and especially romance scams. But over the past couple of years, the group has been perfecting its business email compromise efforts, known as BEC for short. The group has particularly targeted medium and large US nonprofits that are often equipped with less advanced defenses. Recent targets include the Boy Scouts of America, YMCA chapters, a midwestern Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, the West Coast chapter of the United Way, medical groups, antihunger organizations, and even a ballet foundation in Texas. "With most BEC attacks, a vast majority of employees that receive them would know they're scams," says Crane Hassold, senior director of threat research at Agari who previously worked as a digital behavior analyst for the FBI. "But it only takes a very small number of successes to make it very profitable." Charity work Between November 2017 and this month, Agari observed Scarlet Widow targeting 3,483 nonprofits and 5,581 individuals related to nonprofits. Similarly, the group targeted 660 education-related institutions and 1,815 associated individuals. Over the same period of time, the group also targeted 1,505 tax-related organizations and 9,592 individuals as part of tax prep cons. BEC relies on access to an organization's email. In practice, this can mean that scammers send carefully tailored emails from seemingly legitimate accounts of a business to coworkers, perhaps touting a fictitious initiative within a firm. Attackers can also use malware hidden in an email attachment or a malicious phishing link to gain access to an organization's networks, do reconnaissance on what the group is working on and might need, and then approach them from the outside with fictitious business propositions. Agari says that Scarlet Widow is organized much like a legitimate sales and marketing operation, with coordinated teams working on different aspects of the scams, and internal support to generate leads, distribute scam emails, create aliases, and generate fake documents as needed. But the group's most recent innovation involves tailoring certain scams so they now culminate with requesting gift cards instead of wire transfers. This trend is on the rise among scammers, both for individual targets and organizations. The Federal Trade Commission reported in October that 26 percent of people who report being scammed in 2018 said they bought or reloaded a gift card to deliver the money, up from 7 percent in 2015. The FTC says gift card-related losses reported to the agency totaled $20 million in 2015, $27 million in 2016, $40 million in 2017, and $53 million in the first nine months of 2018 alone. "Con artists favor these cards because they can get quick cash, the transaction is largely irreversible, and they can remain anonymous," Emma Fletcher, a fraud specialist at the FTC, wrote in the October report. If scammers can convince victims to buy gift cards—and send them photos of the physical cards or screenshots of the digital codes—they don't need to rely on middlemen to receive wire transfers and initiate the process of laundering money. Instead, they can use online marketplaces to buy cryptocurrency with the gift cards. Agari observed that Scarlet Widow particularly uses the US peer-to-peer marketplace Paxful to buy bitcoin with gift cards. Then they move the bitcoin from a Paxful wallet to a wallet on the cryptocurrency platform Remitano, where they can resell it with a bank transfer. Grift cards Scarlet Widow generally requests Apple iTunes or Google Play gift cards. The FTC notes that other scammers prefer these cards as well, though some will ask for cards to stores like CVS, Walmart, Target, or Walgreens. Though it may seem difficult in a business environment to trick people into paying for services in gift cards, scammers have developed narratives that make the suggestion fit. Around the holidays, for example, Hassold says that Scarlet Widow, posing as a third-party contractor, will claim they need gift cards for end-of-year employee gifts. One Scarlet Widow scammer played to a sense of urgency: "Ok I am in the middle of something and I need Apple iTunes gift cards to send out to a supplier, can you make this happen? If so, let me know if you can get it now so I can advise the quantity and domination to procure." Nothing beats gift cards for speed. In an August 2018 scam Agari analyzed, Scarlet Widow targeted an Australian university, and tricked an administrator into buying and sending $1,800 worth of iTunes gift cards. (The victim thought the request came from the head of the university finance department.) Scarlet Widow then sold the cards on Paxful and converted the bitcoin to cash, all within 139 minutes. Gift cards take a lot of the difficult and dangerous work out of money laundering, but they also have their downsides. For one thing, iTunes gift cards can fluctuate from 80 cents down to 40 cents on the dollar when you convert them on cryptocurrency on platforms like Paxful. It's also difficult to craft narratives that will trick people into buying more than a few thousand dollars' worth of gift cards at a time. If a scammer is looking to swindle a business out of tens of thousands of dollars in one operation, they'll likely still need a wire transfer. Though it may not have quite the hacker mystique of a more technical-sounding attack like cryptojacking, business email compromise is one of the main practical threats to organizations today. Note that the same measures that can help avoid wire-transfer scams—like requiring multiple employees to review and sign off on payments—apply to gift card scams as well. source

    iTunes 12.9.3.3

iTunes is the easiest way to organize and enjoy the music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books you already have — and shop for the ones you want to get. You can even listen to free streaming radio stations with iTunes Radio. iTunes is an advanced application that's not only a very good media player, but also a great iPod and iPhone manager. Simplicity is perhaps the most appropriate word that can summarize its overall looks and usability. iTunes enables you to do anything you want with your gadgets, including backups, synchronization, contact management and, most importantly, install applications from the Apple Store. iPhone owners surely know that in order to buy and install apps hosted by the iTunes Store, they need the downloadable application which provides the necessary environment for purchasing software in a secure method. The application will play your videos and music in a heartbeat, help you organize playlists and library items. Other than that, iTunes has all the features you'd expect in a media player, plus something special: you can easily subscribe to podcasts, TV shows and other types of content and each of these files are automatically delivered to your computer as soon as they become available. The 'iTunes Backup' feature comes in quite handy and will allow you to save your library to CDs or DVDs. You can backup just the Store purchases, or the entire content, as you wish. There is also an option that enables you to perform an incremental backup, which means that only the items added or changed since the last backup will be updated. With iTunes, everything is kept at hand and the seamless integration with external devices like iPods and iPhones allows you to manage everything with great ease. Of course you can use it as a media player as well, but it's best you take it for a spin to see for yourself what it can actually do for you. 7. UPDATED: Lady Gaga has addressed her 2013 collaboration with R. Kelly in a tweet on Wednesday night, revealing that she is pulling the song “Do What U Want” from iTunes and streaming services. “I stand behind these women 1000%, believe them, know they are suffering and in pain and feel strongly that their voices should be heard and taken seriously.” Referring to the Lifetime documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly,” Gaga continues:”What I am hearing about the allegations against R Kelly is absolutely horrifying and indefensible. As a victim of sexual assault myself, I made both the songs and video at a dark time in my life, my intention was to create something extremely defiant and provocative because I was angry and still hadn’t processed the trauma that had occurred in my own life.” In Sept. 2015, Gaga released “‘Til It Happens to You,” the Oscar-nominated song to “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about sexual assaults on college campuses. Relating the Kelly collaboration to her own experience, Gaga writes: “I think it’s clear how explicitly twisted my thinking was at the time. If I could go back and have a talk with my younger self I’d tell her to go through the therapy I have since then, so that I could understand the confused post-traumatic state that I was in-or if therapy was not available to me or anyone else in my situation-to seek help, and speak openly and honestly as possible about what we’ve been through. I can’t go back, but I can go forward and continue to support women, men and people of all sexual identities, and of all races who are victims of sexual assault.” “Do What U Want (With My Body), released in late 2013 and featured on the album “ARTPOP,” was also performed on the American Music Awards that year in a provocative display that nodded to Marilyn Monroe’s sexual relations with President John F. Kennedy (pictured above). “I intend to remove this song off iTunes and other streaming platforms and will not be working with him again,” Gaga wrote in her tweet. While by early Thursday afternoon (ET) the song remained available for download on iTunes and Amazon and for streaming at Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon and Tidal, a source close to the situation noted to Variety that the services are essentially distributors and the decision rests with Gaga’s label, Interscope Records, which owns the repertoire. Another tells Variety that Interscope is working to follow Gaga’s wishes and remove the song as soon as possible. R. Kelly remains signed to RCA Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music, though, according to insiders, it is expected that the company will part ways with the singer imminently. According to Lifetime, “Surviving R. Kelly” was watched by an average of 2.1 million total viewers, factoring Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings. The series, which included interviews with #MeToo founder and civil rights activist Tarana Burke, musician John Legend and others, documents the decades of sexual abuse allegations against the R&B artist. It aired across three nights, starting on Thursday, Jan. 3, concluding on Saturday, Jan. 5. Read Gaga’s tweet in its entirety below: Source

  12. iTunes will be published in the Windows Store You probably didn’t see this coming, but one of the biggest announcements at Build today is that Apple is bringing iTunes to the Windows Store. That’s right, Apple, which is Microsoft’s big rival in the software market, has agreed to port iTunes to the Windows Store, bringing it with the full feature package just like the desktop version. Microsoft hasn’t provided too many details on the Windows Store version of iTunes, but Terry Myerson has said that full support for iPhones will be provided, which means that you should be able to manage your phones just like on a Mac or a Windows desktop. Is this a bad move for Apple? Probably not, especially because iTunes was already available on Windows, so bringing it to the Windows Store only helps Cupertino make sure that its customers get access to its services and have an easy way to manage their iPhones. At the same time, with this application, Apple also seems to be suggesting that it expects Windows 10 S to be a hit, as the operating system is limited to Windows Store and the iPhone maker doesn’t want to be late to this party. Windows 10 S customers will thus be able to manage their iPhones, even if Win32 software is not available. The Windows Store version of iTunes will be touch optimized, so it’ll work like a charm with tablets and pretty much all devices running Windows 10. There’s no ETA when iTunes arrives in the Windows Store, but expect that to happen very soon, as Microsoft is already working with Apple to publish it for all users already on Windows 10. Source

  17. Lars von Trier's sex drama 'Nymphomaniac' is now causing even more controversy due to its high online piracy rates. According to an MPA-affiliated anti-piracy group, releasing the movie on iTunes first in the U.S. only resulted in even more illegal downloads. However, the full picture seems somewhat less cut-and-dried. There are many factors responsible for people illegally downloading content from the Internet. Of course, some just like the idea of something for nothing, while others may not have the means or ability to pay, but pricing is only part of the story. After a decade-and-a-half of consumers crying out for content to be made available online in a timely fashion, only now are there truly encouraging signs that the entertainment companies are at least on the right track, with the music industry making better progress than most. But with its emphasis on keeping theater, PPV, DVD and other revenue channels sacred and in a pretty strict sequence, Hollywood has other ideas. The studios are still years away from debuting all movies online and in theaters on the same day which inevitably leads to piracy. This week, however, an MPA-affiliated anti-piracy group claimed that having an early online release only leads to movies being pirated more. The debate surrounds the Lars von Trier movie Nymphomaniac [trailer:NSFW], a controversial two-part drama starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and featuring Christian Slater, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe. It documents the decades-long destructive sex life of its lead character, Joe. The movie had its theatrical release in its native Denmark on Christmas Day 2013 but no copy appeared on torrent sites. Usually a movie would then get released in theaters in other countries, but instead it appeared on the U.S. version of iTunes on March 6, 2014. Shortly after the movie appeared illegally online, and quickly became a bit of a hit. Anti-piracy group Rights Alliance said it hired US-based MarkMonitor to track downloads of the movie and discovered that in the first two weeks after airing on iTunes, the movie was illegally downloaded more than 283,600 times. By March 24 that number had increased to almost 349,000 downloads. Commenting on the findings, lawyer and Rights Alliance chief Maria Fredenslund said that the large number of illegal downloads go towards dispelling the notion that people download less when content is made available quickly online. “We often hear the story that if only the movies came out earlier in the legal market, then it would reduce piracy on the web,” Fredenslund told DR.dk. “Here we see that the number of illegal downloads actually explodes while the film is being made available on the U.S. iTunes.” But while there can be little doubt that the copies currently circulating online are from U.S. VOD sources, stating that an online release caused all this piracy isn’t really the full picture. What Rights Alliance didn’t mention was that the movie didn’t hit U.S. theaters until March 21, which left a two-week plus window in which piracy could thrive. Also complicating matters is that distributor Magnolia Pictures only released the movie to 22 theaters on March 21, with just another 17 gaining access today. The rest will have to wait well into April, by which time part two of the movie will already be debuting. But despite the doom and gloom coming out of Denmark, Magnolia Pictures says the movie is “doing very well.” Nymphomaniac’s budget was less than $5 million with Magnolia reportedly paying $2 million for U.S. rights. Finally, it’s interesting that Rights Alliance admit that when they did their tracking of Nymphomaniac downloads they only came across 1,003 Danish IP addresses pirating the movie. Did giving the movie to Denmark first contribute to that low amount? Or maybe it’s because Danes have become so familiar with obtaining foreign IP addresses to get around a 2008 blockade of The Pirate Bay and gain access to the U.S. version of Netflix, they have since disappeared into the crowd. iTunes for Android coming soon

Apple is considering new ways to takes its iTunes music collection to users, and also to some new users. According to the sources at Billboard, Apple is considering releasing a on-demand music streaming service that will compete with Spotify and the new Beats Music service. Apple is currently in talks with senior label executives regarding this move. More intriguingly perhaps, is Apple’s decision to take the iTunes store to Android. The same sources have also revealed that Apple is considering releasing an iTunes app on Android, that will allow existing and new iTunes users to access Apple’s vast library of music. Apple has so far been very conservative with the iTunes store, with Windows being the only other platform other than Apple’s own that has access to the iTunes store. An Android app would help the company reach out to an even wider audience than is possible with its own platforms and help slow down the decline of online music sales. Source
