  5. Acting on behalf of various copyright holders, anti-piracy group BREIN has shut down the private torrent tracker Snuffelland. The group tracked down the site's operators, a middle-aged married couple and a 60-year-old uploader. All agreed to a pay a modest settlement. Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN has targeted operators and uploaders of pirate sites for more than a decade. The group’s main goal is to shut the sites down. Instead of getting embroiled in dozens of lengthy court battles, it prefers to settle the matter with those responsible. This week, BREIN announced another victory against a small torrent site, Snuffelland. The private tracker was targeted at a Dutch audience and the anti-piracy group managed to track down its operators. According to BREIN, the site was run by a married couple from the town of Montfort, a 65-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman. In addition, the group also identified one of the uploaders, a 60-year-old man from Heukelum. All three are unemployed and their financial position was taken into account in determining the scale of the settlement. The couple agreed to pay 2,500 euros and the uploader settled for 650 euros, with a threat of further penalties if they are caught again. The private tracker itself was shut down and replaced by a message that was provided by BREIN. “Making copyright-protected works available infringes the copyrights of the entitled rightsholder. Downloading from unauthorized sources is also prohibited in the Netherlands,” the message reads. “For providers of legal content, snuffelland.org refers you to thecontentmap.nl and film.nl,” it adds. These type of shutdowns are nothing new. BREIN has taken down hundreds of smaller sites in the past. However, only in recent years has the group has started to publish these settlement details. That serves as a deterrent but also provides some more insight into how the group prefers to solve these cases, which appears to be relatively softly. In this case, it also disproves the notion that torrent sites are run by youngsters. torrentfreak

  8. Last weekend, after what appeared to be a pre-order blunder, Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok was leaked online in advance of its official release date. Interestingly, it now transpires that director Taiki Waititi is no stranger to piracy himself, after admitting that his showreel for the movie contained source material he'd "illegally torrented" on the Internet. It’s not often that movies escape being pirated online but last weekend was a pretty miserable one for the people behind Thor:Ragnarok. Just four months after the superhero movie’s theatrical debut, the Marvel hit was due to be released on disc February 26th, with digital distribution on iTunes planned for February 19th. However, due to what appeared to be some kind of pre-order blunder, the $180 million movie was leaked online, resulting in a pirate frenzy that’s still ongoing. But with the accidental early release of Thor:Ragnarok making waves within the torrent system and beyond, it seems ironic that its talented director actually has another relationship with piracy that most people aren’t aware of. In an interview for ‘Q’, a show broadcast on Canada’s CBC radio, Taika Waititi noted that Thor: Ragnarok might be a “career ender” for him, something that was previously highlighted in the media. However, the softly-spoken New Zealander also said some other things that flew completely under the radar but given recent developments, now have new significance. Speaking with broadcaster Tom Power, Waititi revealed that when putting together his promotional showreel for Thor: Ragnarok, he obtained its source material from illegal sources. Explaining the process used to acquire clips to create his ‘sizzle reel’ (a short video highlighting a director’s vision and tone for a proposed movie), Waititi revealed his less-than-official approach. “I cut together little clips and shots – I basically illegally torrented and, erm, you know, ripped clips from the Internet,” Waititi said. “Of a bunch of different things?” Power asked. “I don’t mind saying that…erm…on the radio,” Waititi added, unconvincingly. With Power quickly assuring the director that admitting doing something illegal was OK on air, Waititi perhaps realized it probably wasn’t. “You can cut that out,” he suggested. That Waititi took the ‘pirate’ approach to obtaining source material for his ‘sizzle reel’ isn’t really a surprise. Content is freely accessible online, crucially in easier to consume and edit formats than even Waititi has access to on short notice. And, since every film in memory is just a few clicks away, it’d be counter-intuitive not to use the resource in the name of creativity. Overall then, it’s extremely unlikely that Waititi’s pirate confession will come to much. Two of his previous feature films, ‘Boy’ and ‘Hunt For The Wilderpeople’, held titles for the highest-grossing New Zealand film, the latter achieving the accolade in 2017. Also in 2017, Waititi was named New Zealander of the Year in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the well being of the nation.” Praise doesn’t come much higher than that. How many torrent swarms he helped to keep healthy is destined remain a secret forever though, but as an emerging movie hero in his own right, people will forgive him that. 9. ExtraTorrent goes down for extended period of time One of the most popular torrent sites in the world, ExtraTorrent, has gone down some 24 hours ago and hasn't resurfaced since. It is unclear at this point what the reasons behind the downtime are. The site has millions of daily visitors and is the second-largest torrent site following The Pirate Bay. Despite its popularity, admins seem to be unable to get the site back up again. When trying to access the site, a Cloudflare notification displays, indicating the site's servers are down. The site's Facebook page sheds no light on the situation, either, as the last post dates back from April. One of the posts there, however, sends people to various mirror sites, all of which are also down. TorrentFreak reports that the only possible explanation for the site's downtime is a technical problem, especially since the site's domain names are operating normally. The servers, however, seem to be the problem. ExtraImage, the associated image hosting site, is also up and running as per usual. While the site may be down, release groups related to the site are operating, while distributions groups such as EtHD and ettv are releasing their pirated content via The Pirate Bay instead. A history of issues It wouldn't be the first time ExtraTorrent has had issues. Back at the beginning of March, ExtraTorrent's main domain was shut down by the registrar. While ExtraTorrent.cc was the main domain, the site has plenty of those for backup. It only lasted a couple of days before ExtraTorrent regained control over the domain, however. The site has also been the target of DDoS attacks in the past, which is only natural given the site's popularity and size. When we know more, we'll update with the latest information, whether good or bad. Source

  15. With the imminent release of any high profile video game, there inevitably are a number of pirate copies made available through torrents on peer-to-peer networks. Choosing to download one of these illegal copies of a game comes with a lot of risk on the part of the downloader. If you’re lucky, you get a clean version of the game, but more often than not there’s malware attached. In the case of Watch Dogs, which is officially released tomorrow, one pirate has decided to use the game for a get rich quick scheme. Their torrent version, known as the Skidrow release, bundles with it a hidden Bitcoin miner virus. Anyone attempting to run the game from this torrent will also activate the Bitcoin miner on their PC, and in turn start generating Bitcoin for whoever added the miner to this release. The side effect for the user is a big chunk of CPU time dedicated to mining Bitcoin for someone else and no actual guarantee the game will work. That means more heat and power use, and an unstable PC in some cases. Your PC is also running a virus, so who knows what else it will be susceptible to running in the future. There are apparently two versions of the Skidrow releases ofWatch Dogs–the real one and a fake one which includes theBitcoin miner virus. Source
  16. For the first time in history more than 200,000 people have shared a single file online at the very same time. A few hours ago Game of Thrones pirates smashed the old record, and a day after the latest episode came online more than 1.5 million people have already grabbed a copy. Game of Thrones has been the focus of many piracy discussions in recent years, and for good reason. The HBO hit series has a following of millions of “pirates” who prefer to watch the show through unauthorized channels instead of paid subscriptions. Some TV-industry insiders closely connected to the show see it as a compliment, or believe the show may even benefit from these rogue followers. On the other hand, however, HBO is cracking down on fans and sites who spread the show without permission. The pirates themselves are also divided in the reasons why they pirate. Some have no other option, as Game of Thrones is not available where they live, while others simply find the legal options too expensive. In the midst of all these different view points there is one stable factor. The demand among pirates is growing year after year. During the first season in 2011 the most popular episode was shared 3.4 million times during the entire year, a number that’s now reached in just a few days. Game of Thrones is particularly popular on torrent sites and this week BitTorrent pirates broke the magical record of 200,000 simultaneous sharers. A few hours after the first torrent of the show appeared on torrent sites, the Demonii tracker reported that 207,054 people were sharing one single torrent at the same time. 163,496 were sharing a complete copy of that particular torrent while 43,558 were still downloading. These are mind-boggling numbers that we’ve never seen before. The latest record was set just a few weeks ago, also for a Game of Thrones episode. Record-breaking 200,000+ simultaneous sharers This Game of Thrones torrent isn’t the only one that is widely shared. There are several copies of the show available in varying qualities which also have thousands of people downloading. Counting all the different releases it’s estimated that the latest Game of Thrones episode was downloaded more than 1.5 million times during the first day. This makes the show the likely candidate to be crowned the most-downloaded TV-show at the end of the year. As previously revealed, Game of Thrones downloaders come from all over the world. Data gathered by TorrentFreak previously revealed that most downloaders came from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands. It will be interesting to see if the current record will be broken again later this year. For now, however, there are no signs that the pirates’ interest is waning. This means that, unless a miracle happens, Game of Thrones will be crowned the most torrented show for the third consecutive year. Source: TorrentFreak

  18. By Jacob Kastrenakes on February 15, 2014 06:34 pm You'll soon be able to stream live video with your smartphone using a type of BitTorrent. Last year, BitTorrent Live was launched as a way to broadcast and stream live video for free. Instead of relying on a single company's servers to record a video and send it back out to viewers, BitTorrent Live is peer-to-peer: it has a broadcaster send their video to a handful of viewers who then watch the video while sending it out to even more viewers to do the same thing. It's only been on the desktop for now, but BitTorrent says that a mobile app is in the works for later this year — though it doesn't say what platforms it might debut on or whether the app will allow for just broadcasting, just viewing, or both. The app will be released in alpha BitTorrent Live itself still remains in beta, though BitTorrent says that it's matured over the past year. The app too will launch in an unfinished state — an alpha, BitTorrent says — though presumably the lack of polish will be in the developing protocol and not the app itself. When we initially tried it last year, the protocol's reliance on a distributed network remained problematic: when there weren't enough viewers, videos would start slowly or wouldn't play at all. At the moment, it appears to have worked past some of those kinks and is performing much better, at least on officially featured streams. For individual, small-scale broadcasters, there may be no immediate benefit to using BitTorrent over one of the many companies that offer live broadcasting for free. But for broadcasters that want an inexpensive way to stream a lot of content — and to make money off while doing it — BitTorrent seems to be hoping that Live will be a compelling option. For one, streaming content in bulk can be done for free, but perhaps more importantly, after an early demo in February 2012, Bram Cohen told TechCrunch that BitTorrent Live would make it relatively inexpensive to begin showing ads on a stream — a feat BitTorrent can handle thanks to Live's peer-to-peer nature lending to low overhead. If you're curious how well the protocol works, you can head over to BitTorrent Live's website where a number of streams are currently broadcasting. http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/15/5414430/bittorrent-live-mobile-app-launching-2014
19. By Thorin Klosowski Today 8:00 AM AEST Dear Lifehacker, I keep hearing people talk about BitTorrent Sync, but I’m not sure why I should care about it. Isn’t it just another file-syncing service? Why would I use it instead of something like Dropbox? Sincerely, Split Torrent Dear ST, You’re right, the usefulness of BitTorrent Sync isn’t immediately evident. While it might look like a Dropbox replacement on the surface, that’s not exactly how it works. So, let’s talk about what it is and how it works before we go on to some of the uses for it. What BitTorrent Sync Does (and Doesn’t) Do At a glance, BitTorrent Sync looks a lot like Dropbox, but that’s not exactly the case. It is a file-syncing service where you can sync files and directories across computers, but you don’t have access to those files online like you do with Dropbox… and in some cases, that’s a good thing. BitTorrent Sync uses peer-to-peer file sharing to synchronise your files between computers. When you point the BitTorrent Sync app at a directory on your computer, you share those files with any other computer that you give a secret passcode to. The data only lives on your computer and the computers you share it with (or mobile phones sync). It’s never uploaded to a third-party server like other file-syncing programs. Since you data is never uploaded to a server, your storage capacity is only limited to your own hard drive, and no one else has access to your files. The downside to BitTorrent Sync is that your home computer must be on at all times if you want access to files. This is great as a security measure because your private data is never on a server, but it does make accessing files a bit of a pain. Likewise, sharing is a bit more complicated with BitTorrent Sync than it is with most file syncing services. If you want to share files with other people, they’ll need BitTorrent Sync software installed as well as a secret code you generate and send to them. When You’d Want to Use BitTorrent Sync BitTorrent Sync isn’t quite as easy to use as something like Dropbox for everyday file backups, but it’s still a solid option for file syncing. Most importantly, BitTorrent Sync is one of the most secure ways to sync files because your data never goes to a server. That means that nobody can peek in on your private files. As Wired recently pointed out, this is a key feature:For the past 15 years, our software and data have steadily moved into the cloud, bringing massive gains in convenience. The cloud makes it easier not only to share data, among other things. But in some ways, it has also eroded our privacy. The NSA, it seems, has been tapping major cloud services in order to spy on users, and the revelations highlighted the dangers of using a file-sharing service like Dropbox. Indeed, some of the leaked NSA documents indicated that Dropbox had been specifically targeted. But in a departure from Dropbox, Sync doesn’t store data in one central repository that can be tapped by the NSA and others. It connects machines via peer-to-peer networking, meaning they can sync without storing data on any server. That means an interloper can’t access data without tapping each individual machine. Besides the security, BitTorrent Sync is also great because it isn’t limited by space — you don’t need to worry about cloud storage limits, since the only limits are your own hard drives (which are likely much bigger than Dropbox’s 2GB of space, or even Box’s 50GB of space). In addition, it’s also one of the best ways to share a massive amount of files with someone. Since BitTorrent Sync is free it’s easy to share project files with coworkers, large videos with friends, or any other massive folder you need to share. As long as they also have BitTorrent Sync, of course. For example, if you’re working on a movie with a partner, you probably have a folder with a couple hundred GB of video in it. With Dropbox, this would be expensive to store and share with your partner, but BitTorrent Sync keeps your computers in sync with each for free. Any time you need to send a massive file to someone, BitTorrent Sync will prove helpful. Other Uses For BitTorrent Sync Of course, like other file sharing services, BitTorrent sync can go beyond just syncing files. Most of our top 10 uses for Dropbox also apply to BitTorrent sync, and there are al of other BitTorrent Sync-specific projects you can do too: ◾ Make your own Dropbox clone with a Raspberry Pi and BitTorrent Sync ◾ Set up BitTorrent Sync on Your FreeNAS box (if you need help setting up FreeNAS our guide should get you there) ◾ Use BitTorrent Sync to access your music from anywhere ◾ Use Git with BitTorrent Sync ◾ Generate easily shareable links to files with BitBox ◾ Create a Private Dropbox-style server BitTorrent Sync is still in beta, but it’s worth downloading and messing around with if you’re ever sharing large files or you’re just worried about security. If nothing else, it’s useful at least a few times a year when you need to share massive amounts of data with someone. 20. By Martin Brinkmann on January 30, 2014 Sharing data is often not as easy as it sounds. While it is usually not a problem to make available smaller data sets to a group of people or the public, it quickly becomes an issue if the sets grow in size. If you need to make available a 9 Gigabyte archive for example, many of the traditional file sharing options become automatically unavailable to you. You cannot use email or the majority of file synchronization services for example, and while you could set up a file server, it requires more work than you may want to invest, considering that you not only have to set up the server, but also maintain it and make sure it is secure. Academic Torrents is an attempt to make academic datasets and papers available via BitTorrent. When you open the site you are greeted with a short introduction of what the site is, and what it has to offer. Here is a short introductory video that explains what Academic Torrents is. The three core features of Academic Torrents are: Provides an index of scientific data. Uses a redundant and high speed network. Offers reproducibility and open access. You can use the search form at the top to find information by name, author or dataset, or use the browse feature instead to browse the datasets, papers or collections directly. We've designed a distributed system for sharing enormous datasets - for researchers, by researchers. The result is a scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant repository for data, with blazing fast download speeds. Contact us at [email protected] Browse Data Base Browse Papers Browse Collections Reproducibility Making datasets available is necessary for reproducible research. But getting and sharing data can be slow and difficult, especially for large datasets. Academic torrents solves the problems of both sharing and downloading data by providing a distributed repository for datasets which is fast, scalable, and easy to use. Library design in the digital age A robust distributed replication design allows libraries to utilize this system as their backbone. Providing fault tolerant hosting of curated data for a university, research lab, or home library. When libraries have data on-site, bandwidth and time are saved. Also, this system can be used as the foundation of a new open-access publishing system where libraries manage data instead of licenses for external data sources. We are a distributed data repository The academic torrents network is built for researchers, by researchers. Its distributed peer-to-peer library system automatically replicates your datasets on many servers, so you don't have to worry about managing your own servers or file availability. Everyone who has data becomes a mirror for those data so the system is fault-tolerant. What it means for you? The academic torrents system offers blazing fast download speeds and a site for searching available datasets from various sources. For sharing, distributing datasets on the network means no more setting up file servers, less bandwidth usage, and maximum uptime Source
  22. By Ernesto January 17, 2014 For many people BitTorrent is synonymous with piracy, but the popular file-sharing technology has much more to offer. Over the past year BitTorrent Inc. has intensified its efforts to help artists reach millions of new fans, and not without result. A bundle of tracks from Moby’s latest album Innocents, which can be downloaded for free and completely legally, is the most-shared torrent of 2013 with an impressive 8.9 million downloads. Earlier today we published a list of the top 20 most-pirated artists. With well over 5 million downloads this chart was topped by Bruno Mars. Interestingly enough, the honor of the most-downloaded artist on BitTorrent goes to a legal download. BitTorrent Inc., the company behind the immensely popular file-sharing client uTorrent, has just released an overview detailing the successes of its “bundles” program alongside a list of the most-downloaded legal content. The company regularly teams up with artists to release free content. One of the top stars last year was Moby, who shared several tracks from his 11th studio album ‘Innocents’ for free via the popular file-sharing platform. According to BitTorrent Inc., this bundle with free tracks was the most-shared torrent of 2013, with a staggering 8.9 million downloads. Not a big surprise, as more than 85,000 people are still actively sharing the tracks at the time of writing. The second most-shared bundle is the Epic Meal Time video bundle with 8.6 million downloads, followed by Kaskade’s tracks with 4.1 million downloads. The secret behind BitTorrent’s bundle program is that the torrents are included with every download of the uTorrent and BitTorrent mainline applications. Since these clients are installed by dozens of millions of people, the numbers add up quickly. “164,383 BitTorrent Bundles are downloaded around the world, every day. These projects have been downloaded 60 million times, by fans in over 170 countries around the world,” BitTorrent Inc. notes. Bragging rights aside, the downloads also bring value to the artists in question. They are able to reach millions of new fans which may eventually boosts concert visits and sales. Moby, for example, managed to add 419,000 people to his email list via the bundle. In addition, 130,000 people clicked through to the iTunes store while 68,000 new remixes of his tracks were created. That can be considered quite a success. The top 20 most-downloaded bundles are listed below. More stats and background information on the program is available in the 2013 BitTorrent report. http://torrentfreak.com/and-the-most-downloaded-torrent-of-2013-is-completely-legal-140116

  24. Youd think that wed have already had all the possible file sharing use-cases covered when thinking about the different file sharing, backup and synchronization products I need to juggle a multitude of vendors and products in my head Dropbox, SugarSync, EMC Syncplicity, Box, Citrix ShareFile, Microsoft SkyDrive, Google Drive, Egnyte, Oxygen Cloud and on, and on and on. One would be forgiven for thinking that every conceivable niche would be covered. But apparently not, or at least thats what Intralinks is hoping the NYSE listed company is focused on inter-enterprise content management and collaboration solutions and boasts of 2.7M individual users and 99% of the Fortune 1000 using their product of course thats an easy claim to make and hard to disprove but lets move on to the latest announcement from the company. Intralinks is releasing its VIA Enterprise product, a solution that it claims goes beyond traditional file sync and share and supports the complete lifecycle management for the extended enterprise. Which sounds very much like marketing mumbo-jumbo. Even worse is a direct quote from the press release which promises that: Intralinks VIA is a secure and scalable enterprise collaboration solution that helps organizations take lifetime control of their most important information and frees employees to reach new levels of productivity" Essentially VIA takes the sync and share paradigm we know and love, and gives it enterprise-grade security. Over the top of that they morph a content-management paradigm and offer the ability to create specific content repositories (Intralinks Exchanges) which integrate with parallel content repositories on Microsoft MSFT +1.44% SharePoint. Essentially youve got sync and share tied to the document management solution and with a dose of enterprise audit and control on top of it. Or, in other words, youve pretty much got what most other vendors promise to deliver. However, not wanting to dismiss the offering, and having had a good conversation with the company previously, I wanted to dig in to a customer story from Intralinks to get an idea of whether there is real value there or simply a me too offering. I was pointed in the direction of Essex (the company, not the place) a 60-something year old supplier to aerospace, defense and emergency services. The company seems a perfect candidate for distributed file sharing 375 employees spread across four distinct manufacturing plants along with regular interactions with other manufacturers and with their many customers means that file sharing is a daily problem for the company. Previously the company had been utilizing an in-house FTP site, along with some rogue use of Dropbox. Network manager Donna Wurth wasnt happy with this scenario pointing to the strict requirements their defense customers have in terms of file expiration dates and geographical restrictions on storage. The company has to regularly share very large and sensitive files with external contactsengineering drawings, sales documents, marketing materials, and even purchase orders. They also didnt want to bear the overhead of maintaining their clunky old FTP system they needed a simple, secure and scalable solution. Essex provided me with a list of reasons for why they chose Intralinks over their incumbent solutions. The reasons are obvious access, the ability to outsource the provision of the solution, cross-platform support, security and guaranteed US-located data storage. Those are all valid reasons but theyre also requirements that would have been met by dozens of other vendors Box, Huddle, ShareFile and many others can pull similar case-studies out of the hat. And therein lies the problem file sync and share is definitely not a zero-sum game, but at the same time is there really an opportunity for quite so many vendors in the space? I tend to think not and cant help but predict consolidation and rationalization in the industry. http://www.forbes.com/sites/benkepes/2014/01/10/the-world-needs-another-file-sharing-offering-intralinks-steps-up-to-the-plate/
