  2. Google patches Chrome zero-day vulnerability currently being exploited Google has released an update for Chrome that patches three security bugs, one of which is a zero-day vulnerability that is currently being exploited. The vulnerability, under the identifier CVE-2020-6418, was discovered by Clement Lecigne, a member of Google's Threat Analysis Group, on February 18. While it is known that the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild, information on how it is being used is not public yet. The vulnerability has been patched in Chrome version 80.0.3987.122. The update is rolling out to all Windows, Mac, and Linux users. However, it is not known when an update with the patch will make it to the mobile versions of the browser. As for the vulnerability itself, it is described as a ‘type confusion in V8’. V8 is Chrome’s component responsible for processing JavaScript code. Type confusion refers to a logical bug that occurs when a program accesses resources using an incompatible type, leading to logical errors. The vulnerability, when exploited, can allow attackers to run unrestricted code on the affected applications. The search giant patched Chrome’s first zero-day vulnerability back in March 2019 when it disclosed the security risk along with a vulnerability in Windows 7. Since the patch fixes a zero-day that is currently being exploited in the wild, it is best for users to update their browsers to the latest version (80.0.3987.122). You can download the update using the offline installer here, or head to the three-dot menu on Chrome > Help > About Google Chrome, and force the update. 3. Hackers are exploiting many of the same security vulnerabilities as last year and they all impact Microsoft Windows products - but a bug in Adobe Flash was the most exploited in 2019. Over half of the most common security vulnerabilities exploited by criminals to conduct cyber attacks and distribute malware are more than a year old, and some are over five years old, demonstrating how failure to apply security updates is leaving organisations vulnerable to hacking and malicious compromise. Researchers at Recorded Future analysed the top vulnerabilities, exploit kits and malware attacks deployed by cyber criminals during the course of 2019. There are patches from vendors to fix all of these bugs, but software patching is often forgotten or ignored by companies and individuals. Recorded Future found that six of the most commonly exploited vulnerabilities for the year were repeats from 2018. All of these repeats are to do with vulnerabilities in Microsoft products, and in total eight of the top ten vulnerabilities are related to Microsoft software such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. However, the two other most common vulnerabilities in the top ten list both target Adobe Flash Player and one of these Flash flaws - CVE-2018-15982 - was the most commonly exploited during 2019. This Flash zero-day has helped power GandCrab ransomware as well as various forms of malware powered with the Fallout exploit kit which provides criminals with a selection box of exploits. Such is the danger of the vulnerability that it was assigned a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score of 10 when it emerged – and was patched – in December 2018. Behind this, the next three most common vulnerabilities exploited by cyber attackers are all repeats from the previous year with last year's number one – CVE-2018-8174 – sliding to number two. The vulnerability in Internet Explorer – known as Double Kill – is deployed in a wide variety of cyber attacks and is associated with hacking campaigns which deliver Trickbot trojan malware, as well as number of common exploit kits. The vulnerability was patched in May 2018, but the way in which is still exploited demonstrates that there are large numbers of users who haven't applied it. The same goes for CVE-2017-11882, a vulnerability in Microsoft Office which was disclosed in December 2016 and still ranks as the third most commonly exploited vulnerability in the list. It's become associated with a large number of Trojans and keyloggers, as well as Emotet, one of the most prolific botnets in the world today. Alarmingly, CVE-2012-0158 remains one of the most common vulnerabilities targeted by hackers, despite being almost eight years old. The critical bug in Microsoft Office can be exploited to conduct remote code execution attacks and despite slightly dropping in popularity, remains in the top ten. CVE-2015-2419 – a vulnerability which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via Internet Explorer also features in the top ten, despite being known about since 2015. EternalBlue was one of the most potent vulnerabilities in recent years, helping to power the WannaCry ransomware attack and it's still commonly used today. However, Recorded Future researchers haven't included EternalBlue – or EternalRomance – in the report because they were first adopted by nation-state backed hacking operations, rather than emerging through the cyber criminal underground. All of the vulnerabilities in the list have received patches – but there are still enough users and enterprises which aren't applying the updates and therefore leaving the door open for cyber attackers. "The problem is that there are tens of thousands of people looking to exploit Microsoft products, simply because it's such a large target," Kathleen Kuczma, sales engineer at Recorded Future told ZDNet. The most effective thing which can be done to protect networks from falling victims to attacks which use these vulnerabilities is to ensure all products – particularly Microsoft ones – are up to date and that if a new security patch is released, to apply it as soon as possible. And because the most commonly exploited vulnerability targets Adobe Flash, the advice from Recorded Future is simple: automatically disable it, especially as Adobe will be ending support on December 31 2020. The top ten most commonly exploited vulnerabilities – and the technology they target – according to the Recorded Future Annual Vulnerability report are: CVE-2018-15982 – Adobe Flash Player CVE-2018-8174 – Microsoft Internet Explorer CVE-2017-11882 – Microsoft Office CVE-2018-4878 – Adobe Flash Player CVE-2019-0752 – Microsoft Internet Explorer CVE-2017-0199 – Microsoft Office CVE-2015-2419 – Microsoft Internet Explorer CVE-2018-20250 – Microsoft WinRAR CVE-2017-8750 – Microsoft Internet Explorer CVE-2012-0158 – Microsoft Office Source
  4. On Halloween, Google releases Chrome 78.0.3904.87 to patch a Chrome zero-day discovered by Kaspersky exploited in the wild. Yesterday, on late Halloween night, Google engineers delivered the best scare of the evening and released an urgent update for the Chrome browser to patch an actively exploited zero-day. "Google is aware of reports that an exploit for CVE-2019-13720 exists in the wild," Google engineers said in a blog post announcing the new v78.0.3904.87 release. The actively-exploited zero-day was described as a use-aster-free bug in Chrome's audio component. Google credited Anton Ivanov and Alexey Kulaev, two malware researchers from Kaspersky, with reporting the issue. Use-after-free vulnerabilities are memory corruption bugs that occur when an application tries to reference memory that was previously assigned to it but has been freed or deleted in the meantime. This usually causes a program to crash, but can also sometimes lead to other, unintended consequences. Back in March, Google patched another Chrome zero-day (CVE-2019-5786 in Chrome 72.0.3626.121), which at the time was being used together with a Windows 7 zero-day (CVE-2019-0859, fixed in the April Patch Tuesday). In April, Kaspersky said both exploits were used together by a yet-to-be-named APT (a term used to describe a nation-state hacking group). The March Chrome zero-day was also a use-after-free vulnerability. It is unclear if this recent Chrome zero-day is used by itself to launch attacks on Chrome users, or is part of a more complex exploit chain, like the March attacks. A Kaspersky spokesperson was not immediately available for comment on this issue. Chrome 78.0.3904.87 is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The release will slowly roll out to all Chrome users in the coming weeks but users can trigger a manual update right now by visiting the browser's Help > About Google Chrome section. 5. HDD Regenerator 2011 Latest Edition + Special fix 12.11.2013 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- HDD.Regenerator.2011.Incl.Keygen.and.Patch-BRD 12.11.2013 Scene release DESCRiPTiON HDD Regenerator is a hard drive utility that will save you time, money and a lot of heartache. When your hard drive is written and overwritten constantly over time, the areas where data is stored, called sectors, can become corrupted and unusable. When hard drive sectors go bad, some or all of these things will happen: * Your files won't open * Your programs will fail to run * Your computer will crash * Your computer will fail to boot at all Program features Fast hard drive problems detection.Ability to detect physical bad sectors on a hard disk drive surface.Ability to repair bad sectors (magnetic errors) on a hard disk surface using Hysteresis loops generator.**This recovery technology is originally developed by Dmitriy PrimochenkoNo data losses in any mode!Corrupted data recovery (making unreadable data readable)User friendly intuitive interfaceEasy to use, no complex settings. You do not need to change a lot of complicated and unnecessary settings. We have already set up the product for you for best performance and results. The product ignores file system, scans disk at physical level. It can be used with FAT, NTFS or any other file system, and also with unformatted or unpartitioned disks.Drive statisticsStarting process directly under Windows XP/Vista/ 7 / 8Bootable regenerating flash can be created from the program and used to automatically start regenerating process.Bootable regenerating CD / DVD allows starting regenerating process under DOS automatically.Working with any existing file system without losses of any dataWorking with any operating system without losses of any data (bootable regenerating CD / DVD or flash should be used for non-Windows operating systems)Prescan mode (very useful for fast determination of bad sectors location, if a hard drive has a large number of bad sectors. Saves your time. Bad hard drives are scanned in this mode even faster than good drives!)Normal scan mode has faster scanning speed4K sector size supportAutomatic process resume in any mode (except CD/DVD)Multiple hard drives better supportReal-time hard drive status monitor.HDD Regenerator realtime monitor is more poweful and precise than ever in timely prediction of hard drive problems.Main benefits Hard disk drive is an integral part of every computer. It stores all your information. One of the most prevalent defects of hard drives is bad sectors on the disk surface. Bad sectors are a part of the disk surface which contains not readable, but frequently necessary information. As a result of bad sectors you may have difficulties to read and copy data from your disk, your operating system becomes unstable and finally your computer may unable to boot altogether. When a hard drive is damaged with bad sectors, the disk not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk losing information stored on it. The HDD Regenerator can repair damaged hard disks without affecting or changing existing data. As a result, previously unreadable and inaccessible information is restored. How it works Almost 60% of all hard drives damaged with bad sectors have an incorrectly magnetized disk surface. We have developed an algorithm which is used to repair damaged disk surfaces. This technology is hardware independent, it supports many types of hard drives and repairs damage that even low-level disk formatting cannot repair. As a result, previously unreadable information will be restored. Because of the way the repair is made, the existing information on the disk drive will not be affected!HDD Regenerator's Delays Detected -If you see delays under Windows, it is recommended to rescan the drive from a bootable regenerating CD or flash.-If your hard drive is external, it is recommended that you connect it as an internal drive.-Generally, 1-2 delays are not a problem.-Permanent delays mean that the hard drive has sectors with long access time.A drive with permanent delays is actually a failing drive and may cause data losses. You can try to regenerate such sectors using the "Regenerate all sectors in a range" option. Also, the delays can be regenerated in the “scan and repair” mode, if the following both conditions are met:1-The hard drive has been completely scanned at least 1 time.2-The hard drive does not contain bad sectors.Important notes Since the program does not change the logical structure of a hard drive, the file system may still show some sectors marked earlier as "bad",and other disk utilities such as Microsoft's chkdsk will detect logical bad sectors even though the disk has been successfully regenerated and is no longer damaged by physical badsectors. If you want to remove these marks, repartition the hard disk drive.INSTALL NOTES 1-Install program But Don't Start The App Yet #if the software started no Problem ! Just Navigate to "HDD Regenerator" Tray Icon Click "Close Shell & Then Stop monitoring Devices "2-apply patch Then use keygen To Register . 3-Enjoy! 6. Newly revealed exploit gave anyone root access on Linux systems Canonical has issued an urgent security fix to the ‘sudo’ package in the Ubuntu archives following the discovery of a major security flaw. A critical fix has rolled out to all users of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, 19.04 and 19.10 (and one assumes Ubuntu 14.04 ESR too) — just run a sudo apt upgrade to install it. But what about the flaw inquisition? Well, if you’re yet to hear about it I appreciate meditative disconnect from social media. The oft toxic waste pools of chatter were with wet with alarm — some manufactured, the rest well weighted — over CVE-2019-14287 when it was announced yesterday, October 14. The exploit, described by TheHackerNews, who also first reported the flaw, is thus: “The vulnerability in question is a sudo security policy bypass issue that could allow a malicious user or a program to execute arbitrary commands as root on a targeted Linux system even when the “sudoers configuration” explicitly disallows the root access.” In other words: anyone could gain root access to a Linux system just by specifying the user ID “-1” . Now, I am not a security expert by any stretch — I use automatic login on everything — but I have to say this specific flaw is rather novel in that it’s so…basic. Like many, I’m used to headline exploits being obtuse and complicated, requiring a highly targeted and unconventional attack vector or unique deployment method. But this one? It could, in theory, be triggered on an affected system — which in this instance is almost anything running Linux — by a single command… Although the implications of the issue is mildly terrifying, it is mercifully redundant now that a security patch is available. So if you haven’t installed it, stop reading and go do it! Source
  7. Microsoft releases new patch for Windows 10 version 1803 Microsoft has just released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803, aka the April 2018 Update (via Neowin). The build 17134.677 (KB4489894) is an optional release that won’t automatically be downloaded on your PC, but because all Windows 10 updates are now cumulative, all fixes included in this patch will end up in next month’s “Patch Tuesday” update for this version of Windows 10. There’s a pretty long list of fixes in this update, though the release notes also mention five known issues that will be addressed in an upcoming release. Anyway, here are the general fixes and improvements in this build: Addresses an issue with a Microsoft Access 97 database that stops a requested operation when a table or column has custom properties. Addresses an issue that prevents Microsoft Office updates from downloading from the Microsoft Store. Updates time zone information for Buenos Aires, Argentina. Addresses an issue with Microsoft Office Visual Basic for Applications that fails to use the Japanese Era registry settings for dates in the Japanese format. For more information, see KB4469068. Updates time zone information for Kazakhstan. Updates time zone information for São Tomé and Príncipe. Addresses an issue that prevents users from enabling gan-nen support for the Japanese Era. For more information, see KB4469068. Addresses an issue that causes a device to periodically stop responding when using an East Asian locale. Addresses a reliability issue that may cause a laptop screen to remain black after resuming from Sleep if you close the lid when disconnecting from a docking station. Addresses an issue with the Group Policy, “Turn off app notifications on the lock screen”. Addresses an issue that may prevent users from signing in and cause account lockouts when using the App-V client to start applications. The issue occurs because Kerberos authentication fails when trying to get user information from the domain name server (DNS). Modify the following registry key: Setting: UseDcForGetUserInfo Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Shared\ Type: REG_DWORD Value: Setting the following DWORD to nonzero will enable the solution. Addresses an issue with the Windows lock screen that prevents users from unlocking a device after multiple smart card users have used the same device. This issue occurs when you attempt to use a workstation that another user has locked. Addresses an issue that prevents the authentication credentials dialog from appearing when an enterprise web server attempts to connect to the Internet. Addresses an issue that causes a client or server to restart when using a smart card to log in with User Name Hints to an Azure Active Directory (AAD) joined machine using Remote Desktop Services. Addresses an issue in which multiple device entries exist for a single, hybrid domain joined device. Addresses an issue that removes the ALLOWCLSIDS policy from the policy XML file when you run the Add-SignerRule for Windows Defender Application Control. Addresses an issue that prevents a virtual smart card from starting when running in conjunction with Citrix 7.15.2000 Workstation VDA software. Addresses an issue that prevents a user from authenticating and causes Windows Account Manager (WAM) to fail when using a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Addresses an issue that causes certificate renewal to fail when using CERT_RENEWAL_PROP_ID with the ICertPropertyRenewal interface. Adds a new Group Policy setting called “Enable Windows to soft-disconnect a computer from a network”. This determines how Windows will disconnect a computer from a network when it determines that the computer should no longer be connected to the network. If enabled, Windows will soft-disconnect (disconnection is not immediate or abrupt) a computer from a network. If disabled, Windows disconnects a computer from a network immediately. If not configured, the default behavior is soft-disconnect. For more information about soft-disconnect, see Understanding and configuring Windows Connection Manager. Path: Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Network\Windows Connection Manager Addresses an issue that may cause the error, “Stop 0x133” in NTFS.sys. Addresses an issue that causes Windows to reuse an expired Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease if the lease expired while the OS was shutdown. Addresses an issue that may cause the Virtual Machine Management Service (VMMS) to stop working. This issue occurs when executing a Live Migration using a Measure-VM cmdlet or any metric Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) query. Addresses an issue in which the graphics device interface (GDI) DeleteObject() may cause the calling process to stop working when both of the following conditions are true: The calling process is a WOW64 process that handles memory addresses larger than 2 GB. The DeleteObject() is called with a device context that is compatible with a printer device context. Provides seamless integration with Microsoft Cloud App Security (MCAS) to discover cloud app usage inside and outside the corporate network for Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) customers. Enhances automated investigation and remediation, including memory forensics, for Windows Defender ATP customers. Addresses an issue that prevents the “Turn off app notifications on the lock screen” policy from working. The path is “Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logo”. Addresses minor issues with unknown options (unknown OPT) in the Extension Mechanisms for DNS (EDNS) for the Windows DNS Server role. Microsoft also released today new cumulative updates for Windows 10 versions 1709 and 1703, but there’s nothing for the latest version 1809 today. This may change later this month, as it’s now rare that Microsoft doesn’t release at least two cumulative updates for a specific version of Windows 10 every month. Stay tuned to OnMSFT as we’ll let you know as soon as a new patch is out. Source

  11. Microsoft no longer installs the Windows 7 March Monthly Rollup automatically, but KB 4088875 is still available in the Update Catalog. Aren’t you glad you held off on patching this month? Thinkstock/Microsoft Pity the cannon fodder. Folks who had Windows Automatic Update turned on and installed Patch Tuesday’s Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2, KB 4088875, have encountered a viper’s pit of problems. Based on reports from all over the globe, it looks like Microsoft is no longer pushing the buggy patch out the Windows Automatic Update chute — but the patch is still there if you go looking for it. Just don't go looking to Microsoft for explanations. Right out of the gate we were warned that KB 4088875 had problems. The KB article lists these: After installing this update, SMB servers may leak memory. A Stop error occurs if this update is applied to a 32-Bit (x86) machine with the Physical Address Extension (PAE) mode disabled. A Stop error occurs on machines that don't support Streaming Single Instructions Multiple Data (SIMD) Extensions 2 (SSE2). (“Stop error” is Microsoft speak for a bluescreen.) Microsoft basically says it doesn’t have fixes for any of those problems —but it pushed the update out the Automatic Update chute anyway. Shortly after the patch appeared, we started hearing from admins that both the pushed Monthly Rollup and the download-and-manually-install Security-only patch, KB 4088878, were causing problems with IP addresses on servers’ virtual Network Interface Cards (vNICs). After applying the update, the server — and sometimes individual machines — simply dropped off the network because their manual IP addresses had been altered. Since then, there’s been an avalanche of complaints. 2 scenarios where the bug is causing problems Susan Bradley has identified two specific scenarios where the bug kicks in: Scenario 1 — VMware. As noted on a reddit post, a new virtual Ethernet network card is installed/enabled after the update. The side effect has occurred before with other convenience rollups, and a workaround was previously posted to this KB and a script is provided to fix the issue. It is not impacting all servers; it appears to be impacting virtual machines on VMware. Scenario 2 — workstations. This one is a bit more fuzzy and not clear cut. I’ve seen reports where workstations with static IPs may be impacted with this update. There are definitely enough credible reports of chipsets being reset and losing their networking IP addresses. Note that I’m seeing this more in businesses than in consumer/peer-to-peer settings. A sign that Microsoft will pull the buggy patch? Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the bug or pulled the bad patches, but they have taken a step that we’ve seen a few times before. When you run Windows Update on Win7, the KB 4088875 patch appears in the “Important” list — but it isn’t checked. Since it isn’t checked, it won’t be installed automatically. In the past, that’s been a precursor to Microsoft completely yanking the patch. At this point, the buggy patches are still available in the Windows Update Catalog, for KB 4088878 (still dated March 12) and KB 4088875 (now dated March 14). If you’ve applied the update and your machine isn’t connecting any more, try uninstalling KB 4088875 or KB 4088878. If you want to continue with the patch installed, there’s a useful 7-year-old article on TechNet from Dan Stolts, "How to Find a Lost, Missing, Hidden or Removed Network Card (NIC) or Other Device and Even Remove it," that may help you get your NIC back. I find it infuriating that Microsoft has stopped pushing the patch — they obviously know there's a problem — but as of Thursday morning, the company hasn’t acknowledged the bug. We really need more transparency from the Patching Monolith. Will Microsoft fess up and fix things? Ha! Join us on the AskWoody Lounge. Source: Microsoft stops pushing buggy Win7 patch KB 4088875, hopefully as a precursor to yanking it (Computerworld - Woody Leonhard)
  12. Microsoft released yet another out-of-band patch for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, along with a Servicing Stack Update, KB 4090914. The jury’s still out on whether the patch works or if it introduces even more bugs. Thinkstock You may recall that last month’s cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), KB 4074588, brought with it a torrent of bugs. After watching customers twist in the wind for two weeks, Microsoft finally acknowledged these bugs: Windows Update History reports that KB4054517 failed to install because of error 0x80070643. (Bogus, an old bug; ignore it.) Because of an issue that affects some versions of antivirus software, this fix applies only to computers on which the antivirus ISV updated the ALLOW REGKEY. (A warning: That’s now de rigueur for all Windows updates.) After installing this update, some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard or mouse, may stop working. This may occur when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance. After installing this update, some devices may fail to boot with INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. This issue occurs when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance Because of an AD FS server issue that causes the WID AD FS database to become unusable after a restart, the AD FS service may fail to start. There is no way to undo the database corruption. To return your AD FS server to a functional state, you must restore it from a backup. Yesterday’s cumulative update, KB 4090913, which brings Win10 1709 up to build 16299.251, claims to fix the third bug: Addresses an issue in which some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard, or mouse, stop working. This may occur when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance. And that’s it. There are no other claimed benefits to this patch. Not confident the patch fixes the Win10 1709 USB bug Although it’s much too early to tell if the patch does, indeed, fix that bug in last month’s cumulative update, a very early reading of the tea leaves does not bode well. An anonymous poster on AskWoody claims: My laptop is Asus T303UA, which is very similar to Microsoft Surface Pro series … [After installing last month’s KB 4074588,] when I attached the keyboard to the laptop, the keyboard had no function at all. In the device manager, it shows unknown USB device. This morning, I uninstalled KB 4074588 and installed KB 4090913. The keyboard came back as normal. However, after few hours, It became unknown USB device again when I woke it up from standby mode. There’s a Reddit thread on this patch where poster HotplugX says: After login, my screen is blank and there is and error dialogue with personalised settings (Not responding) with no desktop shows up. There are numerous reports of other installation problems, hangs and spontaneous rollbacks — typical Win10 update stuff that can frequently be solved with a trip to the new Windows Update troubleshooter. Only time will tell if those observations are due to the new cumulative update or if they’re influenced by exogenous events. Poster neildon1 has an additional problem that appears to be unrelated to this specific patch: I still have around 100 machines that will not install the feb update (.248), or this update(.251). The patching software vendor I use confirms the same issue. Seems the delta patch from jan was faulty, causing it to show as being installed twice. Removing the jan patch does not help. Now neither patch .248. (KB 4074588) or 251 (KB 4090913) will install with error 0x80092004. At the same time that Microsoft released the new Win10 1709 cumulative update, we were also treated to a new Servicing Stack Update, KB 4090914. Susan Bradley has started a line of inquiry into those patches and why they’re appearing so frequently these days. Are you have problems with KB 4090913? Come kvetch with us on the AskWoody Lounge. 13. Intel says it has most -- but not all -- of the buggy Meltdown/Spectre firmware patches in order. While Microsoft announces but doesn’t ship a firmware fix for the Surface Pro 3. Thinkstock One month ago today, Intel told the world that their Meltdown/Spectre patches were a mess. Their advice read something like, “Ooopsie. Those extremely important BIOS/UEFI firmware updates we released a coupla weeks ago are causing Intel machines to drop like bungee cows. In spite of what we told you then, stop installing them now. And if you installed a bad BIOS/UEFI patch, well golly, contact your PC manufacturer to see if they know how to get you out of the mess.” Intel now says it has released really new, really good firmware versions for most of its chips. Intel chips covered, and those not covered Scanning the official Microcode Revision Guidance February 20, 2018 (pdf), you can see that Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Bay Trail and most Skylake chips are covered. On the other hand, Broadwell, Haswell, and Sandy Bridge chips still leave brown skid marks. Security Advisory INTEL-SA-00088 has been updated with this squib: We have now released new production microcode updates to our OEM customers and partners for Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, and additional Skylake-based platforms. As before, these updates address the reboot issues last discussed here, and represent the breadth of our 6th, 7th and 8th Generation Intel® Core™ product lines as well as our latest Intel® Core™ X-series processor family. They also include our recently announced Intel® Xeon® Scalable and Intel® Xeon® D processors for datacenter systems. We continue to release beta microcode updates for other affected products so that customers and partners have the opportunity to conduct extensive testing before we move them into production. Intel's recommendations Intel goes on to recommend basically the same stuff they recommended last time, with a specific call-out: We continue to recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors, and end users stop deployment of previously released versions of certain microcode updates addressing variant 2 (CVE-2017-5715), as they may introduce higher-than-expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior. We also continue to ask that our industry partners focus efforts on evaluating the beta microcode updates. For those concerned about system stability while we finalize these updated solutions, earlier this week we advised that we were working with our OEM partners to provide BIOS updates using previous versions of microcode not exhibiting these issues, but that also removed the mitigations for ‘Spectre’ variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715) Microsoft also provided two resources for users to disable original microcode updates on platforms exhibiting unpredictable behavior: For most users – An automatic update available via the Microsoft® Update Catalog which disables ‘Spectre’ variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715) mitigations without a BIOS update. This update supports Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8.1, and all versions of Windows 10 - client and server For advanced users – Refer to the following Knowledge Base (KB) articles KB4073119: IT Pro Guidance KB4072698: Server Guidance Both of these options eliminate the risk of reboot or other unpredictable system behavior associated with the original microcode update and retain mitigations for ‘Spectre’ variant 1 and ‘Meltdown’ variant 3 until new microcode can be loaded on the system. The “For most users” update is KB 4078130, the surprise Friday evening patch, released on Jan. 26, which I discussed almost a month ago: On Friday night, Microsoft released a strange patch called KB 4078130 that “disables mitigation against Spectre, variant 2.” The KB article goes to great lengths describing how Intel’s the bad guy and its microcode patches don’t work right: There aren’t any details, but apparently this patch — which isn’t being sent out the Windows Update chute — adds two registry settings that “manually disable mitigation against Spectre Variant 2” Rummaging through the lengthy Microsoft IT Pro Guidance page, there’s an important warning: Customers who only install the Windows January and February 2018 security updates will not receive the benefit of all known protections against the vulnerabilities. In addition to installing the January and February security updates, a processor microcode, or firmware, update is required. This should be available through your OEM device manufacturer. Microsoft firmware update for Surface Pro 3 In what must be an amazing coincidence, last night Microsoft released a firmware update for the Surface Pro 3. It’s currently available as a manual download (“MSI format”) for Surface Pro 3. I haven’t seen it come down the Windows Update chute. Perhaps Microsoft is beta testing it once again. Per Brandon Records on the Surface blog: We've released a new driver and firmware update for Surface Pro 3. This update includes new firmware for Surface UEFI which resolves potential security vulnerabilities, including Microsoft security advisory 180002. This update is available in MSI format from the Surface Pro 3 Drivers and Firmware page at the Microsoft Download Center. Except, golly, the latest version of the patch on that page (as of 10 am Eastern US time) is marked “Date Published 1/24/2018.” The official Surface Pro 3 update history page lists the last firmware update for the SP3 as being dated Oct. 27, 2017. And, golly squared, Microsoft Security Advisory 180002 doesn’t even mention the Surface Pro 3. It hasn’t been updated since Feb. 13. It links to the Surface Guidance to protect against speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities page, KB 4073065, which doesn’t mention the Surface Pro 3 and hasn’t been updated since Feb. 2. You’d have to be incredibly trusting — of both Microsoft and Intel — to manually install any Surface firmware patch at this point. Particularly when you realize that not one single Meltdown or Spectre-related exploit is in the wild. Not one. Thx Bogdan Popa Softpedia News. Fretting over Meltdown and Spectre? Assuage your fears on the AskWoody Lounge. Source: Intel releases more Meltdown/Spectre firmware fixes, Microsoft feints an SP3 patch (Computerworld - Woody Leonhard)
