  1. NEW YORK – Everyone has seen warnings at the end of email saying, “Please consider the environment before printing.” But for those who care about global warming, you might want to consider not writing so many emails in the first place. More and more, people rely on their electronic mailbox as a life organizer. Old emails, photos and files from years past sit undisturbed, awaiting a search for a name, address or photo of an old boyfriend. The problem is that all those messages require energy to preserve them. And despite the tech industry’s focus on renewables, the advents of streaming and artificial intelligence are only accelerating the amount of fossil fuels burned to keep data servers up. Right now, data centers consume about 2 percent of the world’s electricity, but that is expected to reach 8 percent by 2030. Moreover, only about 6 percent of all data ever created is in active use today, according to research from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. That means 94 percent is sitting in a vast “landfill” with a massive carbon footprint. “It’s costing us the equivalent of maintaining the airline industry for data we don’t even use,” said Andrew Choi, a senior research analyst at Parnassus Investments, a $27 billion environmental, social and governance firm (ESG) in San Francisco. Kirk Bresniker, chief architect of Hewlett Packard Labs, said these server farms use energy both to retain your data and when you use it. “If I want to actually do something with my data, I have to warm it up and move it through the data center,” he said. And when you empty the email trash, you probably aren’t actually erasing the data. Multiple copies of even decade-old emails are stored on servers around the world, still using energy. The sum of all the world’s data in 2018 was 33 zettabytes — 33 trillion gigabytes — but by 2025 it could increase fivefold, to 175 zettabytes, according to International Data Corp. Every day, the world produces about 2.5 quintillion bytes of data. This is a sector “where emissions are increasingly getting out of control,” said Philippe Zaouati, chief executive officer of Paris-based Mirova, a $15 billion sustainable asset manager. “We need to decrease carbon emissions, and what we see in the IT sector is increasing emissions.” Socially conscious investors have historically been attracted to tech stocks, based on the assumption that it is a low-emissions industry. Some are starting to rethink that. Choi says the problem is getting too big, too fast. How many photos are sitting untouched in the cloud? Is there a net benefit from an internet-connected toothbrush? Is an AI model that enables slightly faster food delivery really worth the energy cost? Training an AI model emits about as much carbon as the lifetime emissions associated with running five cars. Parnassus has been focusing on Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia, companies that are researching more efficient storage technology. But Choi says real solutions may require more radical thoughts. “Data is possibly overstated as an advantage for business, and no one’s really asking the question,” he said. “If a small group of people are the only ones really benefiting from this data revolution, then what are we actually doing, using all of this power?” So far, the tech industry’s main response has been to buy more renewable energy, contracting for almost 6,000 megawatts of power from nonfossil fuels last year — triple what it bought in 2017, according to BloombergNEF. “Data-center need is moving so quickly that most companies can’t keep up,” said Kevin Hagen, vice president of ESG strategy at the data-center real estate company Iron Mountain. It bought up so much renewable power last year that it started using it as a selling point, telling potential customers how much they could reduce their carbon footprint by using its servers. But eventually there may not be enough renewable energy to satisfy the industry’s demand. Iron Mountain’s overall electricity use has been doubling from year to year. Being aware of the problem may help focus more companies on the climate cost of electronic storage. Microsoft this month unveiled a first-of-its-kind sustainability calculator for its cloud customers so they can see the emissions generated by their data. “It’s a question customers were increasingly asking,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith. “I don’t think there’s much doubt in our minds about this as a decadelong, global phenomenon where we are going to see an inexorable rise in demand for technology.” BloombergNEF warns that energy efficiency upgrades or other technological improvements are unlikely to offset data’s greenhouse gas emissions, even if they are deployed quickly. Computing workloads are likely to more than double as more AI comes online, more devices are connected and people do more work in the cloud. But no one seems to know how much fossil fuel energy is being used versus how much is being offset. Bresniker says the tech industry is “flying blind” when it comes to the true cost of storing data. The picture is clouded by a constant stream of efficiency and memory upgrades, increased renewable power and AI aimed at data-center efficiency. “We don’t really understand what the footprint is,” he said. 2. Microsoft might kill the ‘Focused inbox’ feature of Windows 10’s Mail app Focused inbox in Microsoft’s Outlook is a useful feature that makes it easier for you to quickly check out the most important emails. The feature is currently available on the Outlook app(or Mail app on Windows 10) and web across all platforms, but, it might no longer be the case. Microsoft’s Mail app on Windows 10 has received an update, which has removed the Focus inbox tab. It means that all of your emails are now in one place, and you might have to spend a few minutes more to find your ‘important emails’. Fortunately, the update for the Mail app is available only for Windows 10 Insiders in the Fast ring, meaning the majority of Mail app users will get to use the Focus inox feature. Otherwise, the update takes the app to Version 16005.12427.41000.0. It, however, isn’t solid evidence, based on which we can conclude that Microsoft will remove the Focus inbox feature from the Mail app. This could very well be a mistake, or it could also be just a test. In other words, you should take this with a pinch of salt. How many of you send emails using Windows 10’s Mail app? Is the Focused inbox an important feature? Do let us know what you think in the comments section below. Source: Microsoft might kill the ‘Focused inbox’ feature of Windows 10’s Mail app (MSPoweruser)

  5. A malspam campaign is underway that pretends to be an invoice for an outstanding payment. When these invoices are opened they install the AZORult information stealing Trojan and the Hermes 2.1 Ransomware onto the recipient's computer. A recent sample of this campaign was shared with BleepingComputer by security researcher Yves Agostini, which was identified as installing AZORult and Hermes 2.1. These spam emails have a subject of "Invoice Due" and pretend to be about outstanding balances that contain a Word document attachment called Invoice.doc as shown below. Malspam with Fake Invoice Attachment These Word document attachments are password protected in order to make it more difficult for antivirus vendors to detect them as malicious. The password for these attachments are given in the malspam and in the case above, the password is 1234. Document asking for a password Once a recipient enters the password, they will be greeted with the Enable Content prompt. For those who are not familiar with this button, once you click on it, Word will enable Macros or other embedded scripts, which would then be executed. Enable content In this case, when you click on Enable Content, the AZORult Trojan (azo.exe) will be downloaded and executed, which will then download and execute the Hermes 2.1 Ransomware (hrms.exe). Fiddler showing download of malware The Hermes 2.1 Ransomware will be executed first and encrypts the files on a computer. This particular ransomware does not change the filenames, so the only way you would you know you are infected is by spotting the DECRYPT_INFORMATION.html ransom notes as shown below. Hermes 2.1 Ransom Note As always, beware of fake invoices or other unknown attachments. Furthermore, never open an attachment unless you are expecting it from the sender and have confirmed that they actually sent it to you. Otherwise, you never know what you will be opening and potentially infecting yourself with. We would appriciate it if this could be settled no later than the 20th. I have attached the current invoice and the password for the document is: 1234 Thank you. Federico Crowley Source
  6. When Microsoft released Windows 10 build 17623 to Skip Ahead today, one of the "changes, improvements, and fixes" listed was that the company is going to start testing a feature that will force users of the Windows 10 Mail app to open links in the Edge browser. Dona Sarkar, who wrote the blog post, said that Edge "provides the best, most secure and consistent experience on Windows 10 and across your devices." The only problem is that not everyone feels that way. Many users have Chrome, Firefox, or something else set as their default browser, and Microsoft wants to subvert that in order to get them to use its own in-house solution. Luckily, Windows 10's default Mail app isn't the only email client that you can use. This isn't the first time that Microsoft has done something like this with Windows 10. In April 2016, it announced that Cortana will be locked down so that it will only work with Bing and Edge. Then, last May when the company launched Windows 10 S, it confirmed that users won't even have the option to switch their default browser or search engine on the new SKU of the OS. Luckily, Microsoft is only testing the feature, and it will take feedback from the Windows Insider community. Depending on how that goes, it may decide to push the feature. But make no mistake, despite the fact that this showed up in a Redstone 5 build, it will be made available through a Mail & Calendar app update, meaning that this could be pushed through at any time. If you're in the Skip Ahead subset of the Fast ring and you want to leave feedback on the new feature, you can do so via the Feedback Hub. Source

  9. A new remote administration Trojan (RAT) receives command and control instructions through Yahoo Mail, and could be easily modified to communicate with its authors through Gmail or other popular webmail providers. This new RAT’s significance stems primarily from its ability to elude the notice of intrusion detection systems by operating over seemingly benign domains. According to an analysis written Paul Rascagnères of the German security firm G-Data and published by Virus Bulletin, RATs generally transmit the information they steal from victimized machines over a specified port, or by regularly connecting to remote server. Each of these behaviors are well-known flags that are likely to trigger detection on corporate networks. This RAT, known as IcoScript, has gone largely undetected since 2012. Part of the reason, Rascagnères explains, is because access to webmail services is rarely blocked or blacklisted in corporate environments and such traffic is very unlikely to be considered suspicious. IcoScript makes use of Component Object Model technology in Microsoft Windows, making HTTP requests for remote services through Internet Explorer. Another of its novelties is that it appears to use its uniquely tailored scripting language to perform various tasks. In the sample analyzed by G-Data, IcoScript connected to a Yahoo Mail account controlled by its authors. The authors manipulate the malware by sending specially crafted emails containing coded instructions. “Moreover,” Rascagnères writes, “the modular nature of the malware makes it very easy for the attackers to switch to another webmail service, such as Gmail, or even to use services like Facebook or LinkedIn to control the malware while running a low risk of the communication being blocked.” Incident response teams generally contain malware like this, Rascagnères claims, by blocking the URL on the proxy. However, in the case of IcoScript, these URLs are not easily blocked, because they originate from the servers of a trusted service. The efficacy of IcoScript is likely to increase if the attackers diversify the sources of their command can control, configuring samples of the malware to use any number of legitimate webmail providers, social networking sites, and cloud storage services. “The containment must be performed on the network flow in real time,” Rascagnères concludes. “This approach is harder to realize and to maintain. It demonstrates both that attackers know how incident response teams work, and that they can adapt their communication to make detection and containment both complicated and expensive.” Source

  15. Posted 4 hours ago by Anthony Ha Mail startup Outbox just announced that it’s shutting down its current service. The company has one of those ideas that’s both intriguing and slightly crazy sounding — it sent people by your home to pick up your physical mail, then it digitized that mail, all for $4.99 a month. After a pilot program in Austin, Outbox launched the service in San Francisco a year ago, and it raised a $5 million Series A led by Floodgate over the summer. The company itself isn’t going away. Instead, the blog post says it’s “focusing our team and resources on a totally new product.” Outbox says there just weren’t enough people signing up to pay for the service, at least given the company’s costs: However, after an extensive email marketing campaign to our waitlist, total yield from the waitlist was under 10 percent. And as we started marketing outside of this network, we had difficulty finding a repeatable and scalable acquisition channel. Across all of our efforts, our acquisition numbers were over $50 per lead. As our marketing efforts lagged behind schedule, our density numbers remained consistently flat, causing us to spend about double our projected cost to service each customer. Even our most dense routes cost us approximately 20 percent more than our break-even target. After several months of testing and refining, we reasonably concluded that we were executing well and collecting good data—it told us that there wasn’t enough demand to support the cost model. That may not come as a huge surprise to the critics who found the idea impractical or downright creepy. I tried it out myself for a few months, but eventually canceled my subscription. I wasn’t bothered by Outbox employees opening my mail, it just wasn’t as useful as I’d hoped, and it was a pain for me to coordinate with a roommate who didn’t subscribe. As for current customers, the company says they will be able to download a copy of their digital archives until February 28. For nostalgia, if nothing else, here’s a video we made of the actual mail pickup service. http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/21/outbox-shuts-down

    Bing Bar

Wassssssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup! Need some help, as tried everything. Bing bar, well the translator part stopped working. So I un-installed it and installed 7.1.xx.xx as it was the only one I had, hoping to sort out the problem. It didn't and to mock me more, I have to keep enabling it every time I start I.E. 10. So I need help with 1) the download site that stores the latest version, 2) a fix for translator and 3) for it to stay enabled after closing browser. Thanks Lee
