Fighting fake accounts is a full-time job for Facebook The big picture: Facebook utilizes a three-pronged approach to fighting fake accounts including stopping the creation of accounts before they ever make it onto Facebook. The social network's detection systems also look for potential fakes as soon as they sign up and can delete those that make it past the first two defenses. Facebook in the first quarter of 2019 disabled a staggering 2.19 billion fake accounts, up from just 1.2 billion bogus accounts in the previous quarter. The admission came on Thursday as part of Facebook’s third Community Standard Enforcement Report and is the result of automated attacks from bad actors attempting to create large volumes of accounts at once. To put the figures into perspective, Facebook as of March 31, 2019, had 2.38 billion monthly active users on its platform. Alex Schultz, VP of Analytics at Facebook, cautioned about putting too much stock into the figure. Instead, Schultz said prevalence – the frequency at which content that violates Facebook’s standards is viewed – is a better metric to go by. “While content actioned describes how many things we took down, prevalence describes how much we haven’t identified yet and people may still see,” said Guy Rosen, VP of Integrity. As it relates to fake accounts, Facebook estimates that five percent of monthly active accounts – or around 119 million accounts – are fake. Facebook also shared prevalence metrics for adult nudity and sexual activity as well as violence and graphic content. It is estimated that for every 10,000 times people viewed content, 11 to 14 views contained material that violated its adult nudity and sexual activity policy. And for every 10,000 views, an estimated 25 featured content that breached the violence and graphic content policy. Facebook additionally shared a prevalence metric for global terrorism and for child nudity and sexual exploitation for the first time. The numbers in both of these categories were too low to measure using standard techniques, Rosen said, but for every 10,000 times people viewed content, less than three views featured material that violated each policy. Spotify integration, enhanced social features, overlay customization and more Something to look forward to: The Xbox Game Bar Team at Microsoft have recently overhauled their creation to bring more gaming features to the PC. Built into Windows 10, the new Xbox Game Bar is a customizable gaming overlay that offers instant access to widgets including screen capture, audio controls, voice or text chat and the ability to find new teammates with the Looking for Group (LFG) feature. Gaming overlays are quite useful for players who need a multitude of features and controls during gameplay such as capturing screenshots, broadcasting, chatting with friends or just keeping an eye on their PC's vital stats like GPU and RAM usage. Discord, Steam, Origin and many other services, including Nvidia's GeForce Experience (exclusive to their own GPUs), already provide in-game overlays, so it is a bit of a crowded market. Microsoft's latest offering is the refreshed Xbox Game Bar that's just come out after the Windows May 2019 update. While the feature was already present in Windows 10, the newer version adds a lot more features to complement the gaming experience. What the Game Bar might have going for it is that since it's built into the OS, it doesn't require specific software/hardware like other in-game overlays to function. Users can just press the "Windows Key + G," or a shortcut they like, to launch it at any point in their game to access a host of features. Though the company did point out that a small number of games, such as those built using the Vulkan API, may need to be run in windowed mode for Xbox Game Bar to display. "Xbox Game Bar works with nearly all PC games, giving you instant access to widgets for screen capture and sharing, controlling your music, finding new teammates with Looking for Group (LFG), and chatting with Xbox friends across Xbox console, mobile, and PC—all without leaving your game," the company posted on Xbox Wire. One major addition to the overlay includes a Spotify widget that can be used to easily control music and podcasts. Users can shuffle, favorite and play recommended playlists right from the overlay, once they have installed the standalone Spotify app and signed into it on their PC. The Game Bar also allows for individual volume adjustment of various audio sources so you can better hear your opponents' footsteps while your friends on Steam continue to chat in the background. The Xbox team would also like you to capture screenshots and turn them into memes. "Use the Captures widget to add overlay text to your screenshot and make a meme, which you can share with your friends via a message or with the world via Twitter." With the internet's vast and strange appetite for memes, who knows: your next creation might end up trending everywhere. The Game Bar widgets can be dragged around to a layout of your choosing. As part of the team's customization focus, you can now pin streams from your favorite players, drag them anywhere on the screen and continue playing your own game, reminiscent of a picture in picture mode. The updated Xbox Game Bar experience is "just the beginning," with the company looking forward to evolving the feature as it listens to player feedback. VIEW: Original Article.

Senate passes anti-robocall bill in nearly unanimous vote

Steeper fines, longer statute of limitations, and a mandate to authenticate and block automated calls What just happened? On Thursday the US Senate made the first move toward combating robocallers. A bill, which proposes harsher penalties on automated calls, passed with nearly unanimous bipartisan support 97-1. The “Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act” or S 151 (aka the TRACED Act) looks to force telecoms to authenticate and block robocall and would impose higher fines and penalties on those who spam out calls using automated equipment. Penalties can go as high as $10,000 per call. The proposal also extends the statute of limitations from two years to three. Roll Call notes, TRACED will give law enforcement the tools to pursue such scammers. If passed it would task the FCC, FTC, the departments of Justice, Commerce, State, Homeland Security, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and other agencies with providing feedback to Congress on deterrence and prosecutorial measures that can be taken at the state and federal levels. The bipartisan bill was sponsored by Republican John Thune from South Dakota and Massachusetts Democrat Ed Markey. "When a New England Patriots fan and a Green Bay Packers fan can work together, there's some hope for the country," Thune quipped after the vote. Markey responded in kind saying, “There are no blue robocalls. There are no red robocalls. There are only robocalls that drive every family in America crazy every single day.” The legislation looks to address a problem that has been getting increasing attention from the FCC of late. Although it has approval from the Senate, the House of Representative still needs to vote on it before it can be passed on to the White House to be signed into law. It is unclear how the bill will address robocallers outside the jurisdiction of the United States. VIEW: Original Article.

Linda Hamilton is back and buff as ever in Terminator: Dark Fate trailer

New film touted as a sequel to the original Terminator and T2: Judgement Day. Linda Hamilton reprises her role as the original Sarah Connor in Paramount Pictures’ Terminator: Dark Fate. Linda Hamilton is back as Sarah Connor, as tough and distrustful of time-traveling sentient machines as ever, in the first trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate, the sixth installment in hugely influential franchise. (Mild spoilers for original Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day below.) The entire franchise is premised on the notion that sentient killing machines from the future can be sent back in time to take out key human figures destined to lead the resistance against the self-aware AI network known as Skynet, thereby preventing a nuclear holocaust that wipes out the human race. In the original Terminator film, the target was a young and innocent Sarah Connor, future mother to resistance leader John Connor. Then came Terminator 2: Judgement Day, or as I like to call it, The Best Damn Sequel of All Time. A second Terminator is sent to take out a teenaged John—with the twist that Schwarzenegger's original Terminator has been reprogrammed as his protector against a newer model known as the T-1000. Both films were hugely successful and spawned several more sequels: Rise of the Machines in 2003, 2009's Terminator: Salvation, and 2015's Terminator: Genisys, an attempt to reboot the franchise with a new trilogy. It featured the same original characters, played by new actors (Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was cast as Sarah Connor). But the film wasn't quite the box office success the study had hoped for, and plans for sequels were tabled as Paramount readjusted its strategy. This latest installment is the result of that readjustment. Terminator: Dark Fate is being touted as a direct sequel to those first two films, pretty much ignoring all the other Terminator movies as existing in alternate timelines. It's a smart move: an attempt to return to the glory days of the franchise, complete with the return of Schwarzenegger and Hamilton, plus James Cameron on board as producer. Per the official synopsis, "27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent from the future by Skynet in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a hybrid cyborg human (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, for a fight for the future." So what do we learn from this first trailer? We know that Dani has been on the run with her friends for a couple of years. Grace, the human/cyborg hybrid, is the soldier assassin sent from the future to protect her from the scary, new-hotness T-3000 played by Luna. He makes the formidable T-1000 from Judgement Day look old and busted. This Terminator can actually split in two, the better to take out its target(s). (It's a nifty special effect, reminiscent of ferrofluids.) As the killing machine closes in, Sarah Connor appears, shotgun in hand, to enable their (temporary) escape. Sarah still has an intense distrust of machines, even one like Grace. "Never seen one like you before. Almost human," she tells her. Grace responds, "I am human." For all her prejudice, Sarah still knows where to get the best possible assistance, leading them to a remote house in the woods, where we get a brief glimpse of Schwarzenegger's aging Terminator. We can expect the usual escalating stakes and massive property damage as the group struggles to keep Dani alive—once again, it's the only way they can truly "win." Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters November 1, 2019. New Chrome and Firefox extensions from Microsoft bring hardware isolation technology to more browsers Microsoft has created a new browser extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox users who care about security. The new Windows Defender Application Guard extensions for the two browsers provide the same hardware-based isolation technology found on Microsoft Edge on Windows 10, and they will automatically redirect users to an isolated Microsoft Edge session when they’re visiting untrusted websites. Once the extension is installed, users will be able to open an Application Guard session anytime by just clicking the extension icon in the browser. “In the isolated Microsoft Edge session, the user can freely navigate to any site that has not been explicitly defined as enterprise-trusted by their organization without any risk to the rest of system. With our upcoming dynamic switching capability, if the user tries to go to an enterprise site while in an isolated Microsoft Edge session, the user is taken back to the default browser,” the company explained. The new extensions for Chrome and Firefox require the configuration of Windows Defender Application Guard on Windows 10 PCs, plus the definition of network isolation settings by IT admins, as well as the installation of a new Windows Defender Application Guard companion app from the Microsoft Store. This app is the component that will allow Chrome and Firefox users to browse untrusted sites in the isolated Microsoft Edge environment. Last year, Microosft previously released a Windows Defender Application for Google Chrome, but this one only provides a real-time indicator of harmful sites and website status to the browser. It can be used by all Windows 10 users, unlike these new Windows Defender Application Guard extensions which are designed first and foremost for the enterprise world. “We know that many of our customers depend on multi-browser environments to allow enterprise apps to meet various compatibility requirements and enable productivity,” the company explained today. Windows 10 May 2019 Update could be blocked on some devices

Windows 10 May 2019 Update could be blocked on some devices If you’re trying to install Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) on a device running incompatible drivers and software, there’s a chance that the update won’t show up and Update Assistant will render a warning of incompatible software. The upgrade block could be placed on some devices due to compatibility problems. This could be associated with certain Intel driver versions, outdated anti-cheat software and other services that may have the potential to cause problems. As per multiple Reddit discussions and Twitter threads, some users are unable to install Windows 10 May 2019 Update on their devices. Microsoft has already acknowledged a bug with certain Intel driver versions that causes brightness problems. Microsoft has placed an upgrade block on such devices and a fix is being developed. “After updating to Window 10, version 1903, brightness settings may sometime appear as if changes applied took effect, yet the actual display brightness doesn’t change,” Microsoft explains in a support document. “To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with certain Intel drivers from being offered Windows 10, version 1903, until this issue is resolved,” the company added. Unfortunately, Update Assistant doesn’t specify the problem with Windows 10 May 2019 Update. It only states that the PC has a driver or a service that isn’t ready for Windows 10 version 1903 and the update will be offered once the issue is resolved. In a thread, a Reddit user explains that Media Creation Tool may also block the update if incompatible driver or service is running. If the update is blocked on your device, you should install the latest versions of software such as Battleye and drivers or wait until a fix is available. You can also clean install a copy of Windows 10 May 2019 Update with Media Creation Tool or directly through ISO files. Source

Microsoft Edge Dev channel bug prevents latest update from launching

Microsoft Edge Dev channel bug prevents latest update from launching What you need to know The latest update to the Microsoft Edge preview Dev channel comes with a nasty bug for some. The bug prevents the browser from launching after updating. Microsoft is looking into the issue. The new Microsoft Edge may appear pretty polished, but it's still very much in development – and that's on display with the latest update to the Dev channel. Microsoft has confirmed that the latest Dev branch update for the Chromium-powered Edge "appears to stop some users from launching the browser after updating." At one update per week, the Edge Dev channel is Microsoft's secon most frequently updated branch, following the Canary channel. While the browser is in preview, issues like this are expected to pop up. Microsoft is planning to open a new branch, the Beta channel, soon, which will see an update every six weeks. For now, if you're encountering the issue, you'll have to wait to use your browser until Microsoft has figured out a fix. It appears, however, that the Canary channel is unaffected, so you can still try it on both Windows and Mac. Source

Microsoft Edge Dev channel bug prevents latest update from launching

Chromium-based Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 is getting a new update Microsoft is rolling out new updates for both Edge Dev and Canary. The latest update comes with minor changes, fix for an issue that may have resulted in higher CPU usage when the browser was idle, and more. Microsoft is rolling out Edge Dev Build and Canary with multiple improvements. In the changelog, Microsoft says that the update enables the built-in translator and you can use it to translate any foreign language website to your system language. Dark mode is now on by default for everyone and you don’t have to enable it manually via the flags menu. To see dark mode in Edge, you will need to change your theme settings on Windows or macOS. Edge is getting support for the keyword search through the address bar. This means when you type a search engine keyword such as Bing into the address bar, you will be reminded to press the tab button to search using the search engine. “Keyword search is available for all search engines you install or which are automatically detected for you as you browse,” the company explains. You can add any website’s search engine to Edge from Settings > Privacy and services and directly search that site. Microsoft is also adding a ‘Close Microsoft Edge’ button in the menu. The update also improves dark theme in the browser’s task manager. There are various bug fixes included in this release. For instance, Microsoft is fixing an issue that may have caused high CPU usage when the browser is in an idle state. Another bug where the Settings page crashes due to a corrupted user profile has been addressed. Important note Microsoft has just announced that the latest Edge Dev update breaks the browser. The company is investigating the reports and you shouldn’t update the browser at the moment. Better dark mode support coming soon In a forum post, an engineer from Microsoft has confirmed that the dark mode in the new Edge browser will be improved in a future release. “The design for dark mode is not great at the moment. We would be updating this shortly! Thanks for sharing the feedback,” the company said. Source

Windows 10 20H1: All the changes so far

Windows 10 20H1: All the changes so far 2020's first major Windows 10 feature update is now in development. Here's all the changes coming in that release, so far. Windows 10's next major feature update is currently in development. Codenamed '20H1', this upcoming release is currently in testing with Insiders, and is expected to ship sometimes in the spring of 2020. This update focuses primarily on under the hood platform work to improve OS stability and performance. We've had several Insider Preview builds of 20H1 now, so it's time to start keeping track of all the notable new changes found in these builds. We'll update this post periodically with new notable changes once they are made available for testing. Windows Shell File Explorer has a new search UI and is now powered by "Windows Search." The touch keyboard now features 39 additional languages powered by SwiftKey technologies. Input Method Editor (IME) improvements for Japanese as well as Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Dictation now supports 12 additional languages. The Wi-Fi list has been updated with a tweaked UI with better iconography. Apps Disk type is now visible within Task Manager. Accessibility Improvements Narrator is now more efficient when reading tables. Header information is not repeated when navigating within the same row or column. Entering and exiting tables is also less verbose. There's a new command in Narrator to give a webpage summary that gives information about hyperlinks, landmarks, and headings. Windows Magnifier has a new ability to keep the text cursor in the center of the screen making it easier and smoother to type. Source

Mobile Chrome, Safari, and Firefox failed to show phishing warnings for more than a year Google Safe Browsing didn't show phishing warnings for mobile browsers between mid-2017 and late-2018. For more than a year, mobile browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari failed to show any phishing warnings to users, according to a research paper published this week. "We identified a gaping hole in the protection of top mobile web browsers," the research team said. "Shockingly, mobile Chrome, Safari, and Firefox failed to show any blacklist warnings between mid-2017 and late 2018 despite the presence of security settings that implied blacklist protection." The issue only impacted mobile browsers that sued the Google Safe Browsing link blacklisting technology. The research team -- consisting of academics from Arizona State University and PayPal staff -- notified Google of the problem, and the issue was fixed in late 2018. "Following our disclosure, we learned that the inconsistency in mobile GSB blacklisting was due to the transition to a new mobile API designed to optimize data usage, which ultimately did not function as intended," researchers said. PHISHFARM RESEARCH PROJECT The discovery of this significant security bug came during an academic research project named PhishFarm, started in early 2017. During PhishFarm, researchers created and deployed 2,380 phishing pages mimicking the PayPal login page. Researchers didn't measure how fast their URLs landed on URL blacklists. This type of research has been done in the past. Instead, they focused on deploying phishing pages with "cloaking techniques" aimed at tricking URL blacklist technologies and then recording the time it took for these "cloaked" phishing pages to land on lists of "dangerous sites" -- or if they landed at all. For PhishFarm, researchers tested URL blacklists such as Google Safe Browsing, Microsoft SmartScreen, and those managed by US-CERT, the Anti-Phishing Working Group, PayPal, PhishTank, Netcraft, WebSense, McAfee, and ESET. Image: Oest et al. Further, the research team's phishing pages also used six (actually five) cloaking techniques researchers said they've seen used by phishing kits in the real-world: - Cloak A - allow all users to view the phishing page, aka a no-cloak mode used as a baseline for all detections - Cloak B - allow only users from mobile devices - Cloak C - allow only US users from desktop devices - Cloak D - allow only non-US users from desktop devices - Cloak E - block visitors from IP addresses known to be associated with security vendors - Cloak F - allow only browsers where JavaScript is enabled Image: Oest et al. "We found that simple cloaking techniques representative of real-world attacks- including those based on geolocation, device type, or JavaScript- were effective in reducing the likelihood of blacklisting by over 55% on average," researchers said. Results varied per URL blacklists and cloaking technique [check graphs at the end of the research paper], but the thing that stood out during their research was that cloaks A, E, and F had zero detections on mobile browsers that were using Google's Safe Browsing URL blacklist. When researchers repeated their tests in mid-2018, they got the same results, at which point they realized that Google's Safe Browsing technology was not working as intended on mobile devices. [Cloak A was effectively a "no cloak," meaning that Safe Browsing was not alerting users about any phishing pages, even if they used cloaking technologies or not -- effectively not working at all]. The issue was eventually fixed by the end of 2018, researchers said. Source

Systems administrators: You need to know about this Windows 10 1903 patching change

Systems administrators: You need to know about this Windows 10 1903 patching change Microsoft is changing how WSUS and Configuration Manager will handle patches as of Windows 10 1903. Here's what admins need to know. Credit: Microsoft Administrators who manage Windows updates should know about a change Microsoft has made to how patches will be handled starting with the May 2019/1903 update. The change is connected to work Microsoft is doing underpinnings to the Microsoft update systems infrastructure. I first learned about this change thanks to Configuration Manager architect Bryan Dam who runs the damgoodadmin.com site. Microsoft blogged about the change late in the day on May 23, a couple of days after Windows 10 1903 and Server 1903 began rolling out. Those using System Center Configuration Manager or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to patch their systems need to make a one-time change to the settings around getting updates and patches for Windows 10 1903 and Server 1903 or later, as Microsoft noted in its blog post today. Admins/users need to manually configure the settings for 1903 in ConfigMan and WSUS, according to Microsoft, because of work it's doing around the Unified Update Platform (UUP). From Microsoft's post: "With Windows 10, version 1903, we are introducing new product categories to enable future support for the Unified Update Platform (UUP) for on-premises management solutions, which provides improved delivery technologies for Windows updates. A configuration change is, therefore, required for environments running the latest public release of Configuration Manager, as well as for environments using WSUS (without Configuration Manager) for updates. (Note: UUP for on-premises management solutions is not yet available. We will have future news regarding UUP, including a public preview, at a later date.)" In order to deploy updates to Windows 10 1903 or Server 1903, Configuration Manager version 1902 or later is required, Microsoft's post notes. Admins will not have to select a new option each time a feature update is released for Windows 10, Server and/or Configuration Manager; Microsoft officials said they plan to automatically add this new catory to software update synchronization and existing automatic deployment rules as of the next version of Configuration Manager. Updates for Windows 10 1903 and Windows Server 1903 -- and their future follow-ons -- are being released under new version-specific product categories, as Dam explained in a May 22 blog post. And those using Configuration Manager or WSUS need to know this so they can manually change required settings. The Windows 10 1903 and Server 1903 feature updates were both published under the existing Windows 10 product category. But starting with the first updates for these feature updates, the product categories change to version-specific. As Dam noted in his own blog post this week, if admins don't make these changes manually this time around, "the OS updates for the 1903 versions may not sync/apply/deploy/whatever if the technology you use to apply updates filters by the product category in any way." His advice: "Every ConfigMgr or WSUS administrator on the planet will need to manually enable these new categories if they plan to deploy updates for them," Dam said. There's not a lot of published information that I could find about UUP. But here is one story from last year's Ignite conference about UUP, which said UUP is meant to enable companies to use servicing instead of "media-based" technologies for feature updates. As of Ignite last fall, Microsoft was saying UUP would be in public preview for WSUS and ConfigMan customers before year end. UUP is already the default for customers using Windows Update, the story said. Source

"This time when we go to the Moon, we're actually going to stay." Maxar has been selected to build and fly the first element of NASA’s lunar Gateway. Maxar Technologies NASA has chosen its first commercial partner for a proposed space station, known as the Lunar Gateway, to be built near the Moon. On Thursday, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said Maxar Technologies would build the first component of the Gateway—the power and propulsion element. Like the name suggests, it will provide electricity to the Gateway and help move it around. "This time when we go to the Moon, we're actually going to stay," Bridenstine said in making the announcement. He has characterized the Gateway, which will be positioned in a high, elliptical orbit balanced between the Earth and Moon's gravity, as a reusable "Command Module." Under NASA's current plans to land humans on the Moon by 2024, this is where astronauts will launch to from Earth before climbing aboard pre-positioned landers to take them down to the lunar surface. Despite the fanfare Thursday—Bridenstine provided an hour-long overview of NASA's ambitious Moon plans at the Florida Institute of Technology for a relatively simple contract award—the announcement represents a continuation of a Lunar Gateway plan that was initiated under the Obama administration. The Obama space plan involved using the Gateway as a stepping stone toward Mars, but now the Trump administration is pivoting toward the lunar surface. There has been a somewhat heated debate in the aerospace community about whether such a Gateway, which adds to the delta-v energy needed to reach the lunar surface, helps or hinders NASA's efforts to build a sustainable deep-space exploration program. Thursday's announcement left no doubts about the project's embrace by the White House, meaning the Gateway concept has successfully survived a transition from one president to another. Gateway could grow The contract announced Thursday is worth a maximum of $375 million. Intriguingly, Maxar said Blue Origin and Draper will join the team in designing, building, and operating the spacecraft. Such a partnership raises the possibility that the power and propulsion element, which will weigh about 5 tons fully fueled, could be launched on Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket. During a teleconference with media, Maxar's Mike Gold said the company would choose a commercial rocket for the power and propulsion element launch in the next 12 to 18 months. Most likely, New Glenn is the favored launch vehicle, however, Maxar is protecting itself in case that rocket is not ready to fly in 2022 when NASA wants this hardware in space. (At present, Blue Origin is working toward a 2021 launch date of the powerful rocket, but large rocket projects often slip to the right). The Gateway is a unique piece of hardware for NASA in that it will form the cornerstone of its first deep-space outpost. The station will use solar electric propulsion to maintain its orbit and have the ability to maneuver into other orbits around the Moon. Before humans visit the Gateway in 2024, the space agency plans to add a small "habitat" module. Over the course of the 2020s, NASA may expand the Gateway with other modules, including those provided by international partners. Officials said the electricity from the power and propulsion element's solar panels would be more than enough to accommodate Gateway expansion. GOP, Dem Senators officially introduce loot box, “pay-to-win” legislation

Expansive prohibitions could heavily impact large swathes of the game industry. Unlike this ceramic replica, video game loot boxes are not filled with real candy. ThinkGeek Weeks ago, Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) released an outline for the The Protecting Children from Abusive Games Act, aimed at stopping randomized loot boxes and pay-to-win mechanics in the game industry. Today, Hawley was joined by Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) in formally introducing that bill in the Senate, complete with an 18-page draft of its legislative text. Perhaps the most interesting portion of the bill attempts to define so-called "pay-to-win" mechanics in games. Those are defined broadly here as purchasable content that "assists a user in accomplishing an achievement within the game that can otherwise be accomplished without the purchase of such transaction" or which "permits a user to continue to access content of the game that had previously been accessible to the user but has been made inaccessible after the expiration of a timer or a number of gameplay attempts." For multiplayer games, this would also include any purchasable in-game content that "from the perspective of a reasonable user, provides a competitive advantage." As far as loot boxes are concerned, the act targets games where purchasable in-game content is randomized or partially randomized. This includes games where you purchase one item for the chance to purchase unknown or random items in the future, closing one potential loophole before it even starts. Any games fitting the above definitions would be illegal to publish or sell under the act, provided those games were shown to be "minor-oriented" (based on guidelines similar to those laid out in COPPA) or that publishers had "constructive knowledge" that some players were under 18. The FTC and state attorneys general would have authority to enforce the act via civil penalties, and the FTC would be required to release a report on compliance within two years of its passage. "The onus should be on developers to deter child consumption of products that foster gambling and similarly compulsive purchasing behavior, just as is true in other industries that restrict access to certain kinds of products and forms of entertainment to adult consumers," according to an FAQ on the bill from Hawley's office. A huge potential reach The expansive definitions for prohibited content in this act would have far-reaching consequences across the game industry. In mobile gaming, ultra-popular mobile titles from Candy Crush Saga to Clash of Clans, and countless games in between, use gameplay timers and in-game items to gate progress as almost a matter of course. Separately, major games ranging from FIFA to Overwatch rely on randomized loot boxes for the vast majority of their revenue these days. Rulings against loot boxes in Belgium and The Netherlands have forced major publishers to stop selling games in those countries. But the United States is an overwhelmingly larger market where similar prohibitions could have a much larger effect on these publishers' bottom lines. "These are very resourceful people, and I'm sure they can design games that don't rely on gambling directed at children in the center of the game," Sen. Hawley told Kotaku in a recent interview. Today's introduction brings legislation on these issues one step closer to a reality. But similar legislation will also have to be introduced in the House and survive likely committee hearings and markups in both chambers before it can even get to a full vote by all legislators and potential signature by the president. "Certainly, the reception we have gotten from parents [and] from gamers has been absolutely tremendous," Hawley told Kotaku regarding the bill's prospects for passage. "I think it's an issue that more and more people are going to care about as they learn about it, and it'll be the start of a broader conversation." (Sen. Hawley has not responded to a request for comment from Ars Technica) Lobbying groups including as Focus on the Family, Common Sense Media, the Parents Television Council, and the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood offered support for the bill in a statement. The introduction of the act comes after Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) separately urged the FTC to look into loot box regulation early last year. The FTC plans to convene a workshop on the issue later in 2019. Source: GOP, Dem Senators officially introduce loot box, “pay-to-win” legislation (Ars Technica)

The Boring Company appears to have its first paying customer

One dissenting vote from the board based on the company's lack of experience. Enlarge / A view of the exit of The Boring Company's test tunnel in Hawthorne. The Boring Company On Wednesday, the board of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) voted to grant The Boring Company—Elon Musk's private tunneling venture—a $48.6 million contract to build a two-mile Loop at the expanding Las Vegas Convention Center. LVCVA officials recommended The Boring Company's proposal to the board back in March, saying that it had the most competitive price among the transportation companies that submitted proposals. At the time, Boring Company officials said they could build the Convention Center's transportation system for between $33 million and $55 million. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the final cost for the project is expected to be $52.5 million. Elon Musk's Boring Company wants to ameliorate traffic by moving people through tunnels on electric cars or electric skates at speeds of up to 155 miles per hour. Musk has said he can significantly reduce the cost of tunneling through the company's technical improvements to boring machines, the reuse of dirt to create concrete reinforcement, the use of continuous tunneling and reinforcing operations, and by digging smaller tunnels that don't need to accommodate internal combustion engines. One member of the LVCVA board voted against giving the contract to The Boring Company: Mayor Carolyn Goodman opposed the contract based on The Boring Company's lack of experience. Indeed, the tunnel at the Las Vegas Convention Center would be the company's second tunnel ever (its first test tunnel, a one-mile stretch under SpaceX's campus, debuted in December despite an unfinished ride). LVCVA appears to be the Boring Company's first paying customer as well. Although Chicago's former mayor approved a partnership with The Boring Company to build an express O'Hare-to-downtown line last year, contract negotiations have appeared to stall, and Chicago's newly elected mayor has spoken skeptically about the project. However, LVCVA CEO Steve Hill has been positive about using The Boring Company for the Convention Center's transportation. He told the Las Vegas Sun that in addition to the company putting forward the most competitive proposal, he wanted a Boring Company tunnel because "this is a system that has high capacity, it’s innovative and fun, and we think it provides a great customer experience.” Source: The Boring Company appears to have its first paying customer (Ars Technica)

Windows 10 May 2019 Update: the 10 best new features

Windows 10 May 2019 Update: the 10 best new features Windows Sandbox, a new light theme, and more Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update is being made available to existing machines this week. After an extended period of testing, Microsoft is making this update available to everyone via Windows Update. Like previous updates, the May 2019 Update includes a bunch of new features, minor tweaks, and other changes. I’ve been testing the Windows 10 May 2019 Update recently, and here are my favorite new additions. A new light theme The biggest new visual change to Windows 10 in the May 2019 Update is a new light theme. It takes over as the default theme for Windows 10 Home, and it’s essentially a white version of the currently black theme that most people use in Windows 10. While Windows 10’s dark mode isn’t always consistent throughout the operating system, the white theme is fairly well-executed across the operating system, thanks to a lot of apps and areas using white backgrounds as standard. Microsoft has also tweaked the default wallpaper of Windows 10 so it better fits in with the new light theme. Windows Sandbox Windows 10 is getting a new Windows Sandbox feature in the May update. Microsoft is trying to address the fear of running an unknown .exe on your PC, by developing a simple way for anyone running Windows 10 to launch apps in an isolated desktop environment. Windows Sandbox creates a temporary desktop environment to isolate a particular app to that sandbox. Windows Sandbox is designed to be secure and disposable, so once you’ve finished running the app you wanted to test in this mode, the entire sandbox will be deleted. You don’t need to set up a separate virtual machine like most power users do today, but your machine will need to support virtualization capabilities (enabled in the BIOS). Microsoft is making Windows Sandbox available as part of Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise, as it’s aimed at business and power users rather than regular consumers. You’ll even need to go into “Turn Windows features on or off” to actually enable Windows Sandbox in the first place. If you’re running Windows 10 Pro, it’s worth enabling just in case you want to be extra careful about a random .exe from the internet. Uninstall more built-in apps Microsoft has gradually been allowing Windows 10 users to remove more of the built-in apps that are starting to show up in the operating system. In the May 2019 Update, you can now kill off apps like Groove Music, Mail / Calendar, Movies & TV, Calculator, the new Paint 3D app, and the 3D viewer. You still can’t easily remove apps like Camera or Edge, but with Microsoft’s browser moving to the Chromium engine the Edge uninstall option will likely show up in the future. Cortana and Search separated If you’re not a fan of the Cortana digital assistant in Windows 10, then Microsoft’s latest May 2019 Update has some new options for you. Microsoft is now decoupling search and Cortana in the Windows 10 task bar, allowing voice queries to be handled separately to typing in a search box to find documents and files. Windows 10 will now direct you toward a built-in search experience for text queries, while Cortana will exist for voice queries instead of them both bundled together. The new search interface includes your top-used apps, recent activities, and files, with options to filter by apps, documents, email, and web results. Search is still largely the same, with the exception of now searching across all files on a machine. Search is still a poor experience in Windows 10, overall. Microsoft did unveil “Microsoft Search” last year, promising that the new service will power search results in Office and Windows. Microsoft Search is still in the early phases, but hopefully, it will mean that future Windows 10 updates get more powerful search features so you actually find the file or app you were looking for instead of some random web result. Cleaner Start Menu Microsoft is making the Start Menu way less cluttered in the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update. Microsoft has cut the number of pinned apps on the Start Menu and is grouping them differently. This means all the bloatware and crap that’s usually pinned by default is grouped into a single section that you can quickly unpin. Unfortunately, you’ll only see this new Start Menu layout if you create a new user account or you’re using a fresh Windows 10 PC. A new brightness slider It’s the small changes that count, and a new brightness slider is certainly one of those. Available in the notification center, the slider lets you quickly adjust screen brightness. It replaces the tile that simply let you cycle through different levels of screen brightness. If you really want 33 percent screen brightness, you can do that now. Kaomoji (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Microsoft is making it easier for you to send ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ kaomoji from a Windows 10 PC to friends or co-workers. Microsoft has added kaomoji face characters in the May 2019 Update that are accessible through the same existing emoji shortcut (win+period). You’ll be able to pick from a number of kaomoji, and there’s also now quick access to em dash and other symbols from the emoji picker. Desktop apps in Windows Mixed Reality Microsoft is improving its Windows Mixed Reality VR support in the May 2019 Update. While the headsets were previously limited to running Steam VR games and Universal Windows apps, Microsoft is now allowing Desktop (Win32) applications like Spotify, Visual Studio Code, and Photoshop to be launched in the Mixed Reality app. The new feature is available from all apps in the Pins Panel where there’s now a Classic Apps (beta) folder that lists Desktop apps. It’s ideal if you’ve always dreamed of working fully in virtual reality. Windows Update now lets you pause updates Microsoft has finally listened to Windows 10 users and added much more control over how updates are triggered with the May 2019 Update. All Windows 10 users will now be able to pause updates, and Microsoft is even letting people choosewhen to install the latest major version. Windows 10 users will be able to simply stay on an existing version and continue to receive monthly security updates, avoiding the latest feature update. This is a big change over what was available before, especially for Windows 10 Home users. Microsoft is also changing the way it allocates space for Windows updates. Some updates can fail to install if there’s not enough free space, so Microsoft is now reserving around 7GB of disk space to Windows Update. This should mean that devices with more limited storage always get the latest security and feature updates without issues. Sign in to Windows 10 with a password-less Microsoft Account Microsoft is aiming to reduce our reliance on passwords, and one way it’s achieving that is through Microsoft Accounts that don’t have passwords. With the latest May 2019 Update, you can now set up and sign in to a Windows 10 PC with just a phone number on a Microsoft Account. You can create a Microsoft Account without a password by simply entering a phone number as the username, and a code will be sent to your mobile number to initiate a login. Once Windows 10 is logged in, you can then use Windows Hello or even a PIN to log in to your PC without ever using a password. Source

Two more Microsoft zero-days uploaded on GitHub

Serial publisher of Windows 0-days drops exploits for 2 more unfixed flaws SandboxEscaper has published 7 such exploits to date, 3 in the past 24 hours. Enlarge SandboxEscaper Update: One of the two exploits published on Wednesday has now been confirmed to exploit a Windows vulnerability that Microsoft patched in this month's Update Tuesday release cycle. The flaw involving the Windows Error Reporting service was previously described as CVE-2019-0863, Gal De Leon, the researcher Microsoft credited with discovering the vulnerability, said on Twitter. Researchers with "micropatching" service 0patch have confirmed that the other exploit published on Wednesday, an IE 11 sandbox bypass, does indeed work on a fully patched Windows 10 system. The headline of this post has been changed to reflect this new information. What follows is the story as it appeared earlier, with the exception of the last paragraph, which has also been changed to reflect the new information. A serial publisher of Microsoft zeroday vulnerabilities has dropped exploit code for three more unpatched flaws, marking the seventh time the unknown person has done so in the past year. Technical details of the vulnerabilities, along with working proof-of-concept exploits, are the work of someone using the moniker SandBoxEscaper. A local privilege-escalation vulnerability in the Windows Task Scheduler that was disclosed on Tuesday allows an authenticated attacker to gain SYSTEM privileges on an affected system. On Thursday, the person released a privilege escalation code that exploits a bug in the Windows Error Reporting service. Attackers can use it to modify files that would normally be off limits. A third exploit, which was also released Wednesday, works against Internet Explorer 11 and allows attackers to execute a JavaScript that runs with higher system access than is normally permitted by the browser sandbox. Decent deal Like the other exploits SandboxEscaper has published over the past year—including this one Ars covered last August and this one from last October—the three recent ones don’t allow attackers to remotely execute malicious code. Still, as security defenses in recent versions of Windows and other operating systems have improved, the value of these types of exploits has grown, since they are often the only way to bypass security sandboxes and similar protections. Despite some limitations in the exploit that were transparently noted by SandBoxEscaper, the disclosures are significant if they work as purported against fully patched versions of Windows 10. “Any new privilege escalation on native Windows 10 is a pretty decent deal as most vulnerabilities are on applications that you put on top of the OS rather than in the OS itself,” Charles Dardaman, a security researcher in Dallas, told Ars. “If an attacker had an RCE or some other way, like phishing, that gave low-level access to a machine, they could then use one of these attacks to escalate to Admin." In March, Google reported that a then-unpatched privilege-escalation vulnerability in older versions of Windows was being used alongside an unrelated exploit in the Chrome browser. On its own, neither exploit was able to do much damage, thanks to the defense-in-depth mitigations built into Windows and Chrome. Together, however, the exploits allowed hackers to remotely execute malware of their choice. Dardaman said that the two privilege-escalation vulnerabilities SandboxEscaper published over the past 24 hours are likely to have similar capabilities when combined with the right additional exploit. In Tuesday’s disclosure, SandboxEscaper wrote that the Task Scheduler vulnerability works by exploiting a flaw in the way the Task Scheduler processes changes to discretionary access control list permissions for an individual file. An advisory published Wednesday by US Cert confirmed that the exploit worked against both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10. Below is video of the exploit in action: Microsoft representatives have yet to comment on the disclosures this week. It wouldn't be surprising for patches for the two confirmed zerodays will be available as soon as next month's Update Tuesday. "Fifteen years ago today you led us out of the darkness.... Then, the unimaginable." Star Trek fans briefly turned into Internet archaeologists today after CBS posted, then quickly took down, the first trailer for Star Trek: Picard. Earlier this morning, Entertainment Weekly appeared to have taken down a story about the reveal, but luckily for everyone else the trailer still showed up in Google results as "Star Trek: Picard first trailer released." (And this being the Internet, of course, mirrored versions of the trailer soon existed everywhere, showing us the first public glimpse of a show that was last teased at CBS' Upfront presentation in March.) With rampant unofficial footage of the captain officially out of retirement, however, CBS soon righted the ship and debuted the teaser via the @StarTrek Twitter feed, noting it comes on the anniversary of The Next Generation's series finale. "Fifteen years ago today you led us out of the darkness," a voiceover intones elliptically over a vineyard that evokes images of the potential future in Next Generation finale All Good Things.... "You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable. What did that cost you? Your faith? Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself?" As we see a crate of Bourgogne bottles labeled Chateau Picard, the voiceover concludes: "Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet, Admiral?" Focus in on Patrick Stewart's stony face and cut to a logo shot over a gentle flute version of the Next Generation theme's opening sting. (Hey, I know a Starfleet captain who plays the flute!) What happened? Stewart said at Star Trek Las Vegas this month that "20 years will have passed" between the Next Generation setting we know and the Picard series. That would place the show in about the year 2399, 20 years after the setting of Star Trek: Nemesis, making Picard about 94 years of age. That's all to say we know very little about what might have happened "15 years ago" to cause an Admiral Picard to abruptly lose faith after a rescue mission and the "unimaginable" happenings that followed it. The description does evoke some parallels with Picard's capture and assimilation by (and subsequent rescue from) the Borg, and the vineyard setting evokes some ties to his recovery directly after that trauma. But it's hard to know how much to make of those thematic links at this point. Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman hinted to TV Guide earlier this month that "the destruction of Romulus will play into the series," which would certainly qualify as the kind of "unimaginable" act that could shake the usually unflappable Picard. "What has happened to him in that period of time [since Next Generation]?" Kurtzman said to TV Guide. "Have there been occurrences that force him to reckon with choices that he's made in his life? How do you hold on to being the person everybody loved when the circumstances around you may have changed so radically? Those are the big questions that we're asking." Star Trek: Picard will premiere on CBS: All Access in the US and Amazon Prime internationally at the end of 2019. Famed novelist Michael Chabon is among the executive producers. Google changes layout of mobile Google Search pages

Google revealed a change to its mobile search results pages yesterday that is already being rolled out to all users of the search engine. Google Search is the world's most popular search engine and while it lags behind in some regions, it dominates most. The design refresh of the mobile search results pages aims to better guide customers "through the information available on the web". Google notes in the announcement that the new design puts a "website's branding [..] front and center" so that customers "better understand where the information is coming from". Site names and icons are displayed on top of the page or site title in the new design. Previously, each entry started with the page title followed by the site icon and (part of its) URL. Now, entries start with the icon and URL, and then the actual page title. Google believes that the new design makes it easier to scan the results page. Advertisement uses the same format but instead of an icon Ad is shown in its place. It is hard to say if that makes it harder to spot advertisement; the old design draw borders around Ad which helped distinguish it from regular content. I'd say ads blend in even better than before, and that will surely drive more clicks to them. Depending on your query, you may get several pages worth of advertisement and other Google-powered features before the first organic search result. The company plans to put even more features and services (that it controls) on search results pages in the future. As we continue to make new content formats and useful actions available—from buying movie tickets to playing podcasts—this new design allows us to add more action buttons and helpful previews to search results cards [..] Google is still not honoring its quality guidelines when it comes to advertisement (which it enforces on sites), and the injection of even more Google-powered snippets will will keep Internet users even longer on Google's properties. If you don't like where this is heading, try Startpage Search or DuckDuckGo instead. Tip: check out these five tips to get the most out of Startpage. Update kb4497934 left an annoying bug in my system. Each time I wanted to turn off the computer, it showed the option "Update and turn off" or "Update and restart". I've turned off and restarted several times and the message kept appearing. Off course, there was nothing to update. Finally it took about 5 "Update and turn off" or "Update and restart" operation for Windows 10 to acknowledge that there was nothing to update.

Interesting to read all the non professional, idiotic comments on a very professional piece of security software that has served a legitimate purpose for years. It has been vetted by some of the most security conscious government entities and has been used by them for years. I have used it for years on my home systems. Before the use of virtual machines, it was the safest way to work with any download from the internet. That is not to say that it is the only piece of security software you need, but that it is a valid tool in your toolbox. I have some acquaintances in Sophos that I attended some malware and security classes with a few years ago in Chicago. I will contact them and see if I can find out what is going on with the program.

Intel Discloses Four New Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) Vulnerabilities

The bottom line....Computers are vulnerable to attack. We've know that for at least 36 years. Every new discovery is a remake of Chicken Little's "The sky is falling." When you start patching your microcode in your processor you are going to affect how well that processor runs. You end up trading speed for some pie in the sky fix for a vulnerability that you have a 1 in 100 Centillion chance of being victimized with.

Hackers abuse ASUS cloud service to install backdoor on users’ PCs

When are people going to learn to stay away from commercial cloud services? If they aren't being hacked they are disappearing with your data. If you want anywhere access to your data, buy a NAS and set up your own secure 'cloud'. Drobo has an app called Access that I have been using since it was first tested and I can securely access my data from my phone or tablet. And because I set it up and I control it I can make it as secure as I want it to be without having to trust some idiot setting in a building playing Minecraft or Candy Crush.
