    Pale Moon 28.7.0 (x86/x64) + Portable

Pale Moon 28.7.0 (x86/x64) + Portable Pale Moon is an Open Source, Firefox-based web browser available for Microsoft Windows and Linux (with other operating systems in development), focusing on efficiency and ease of use. Make sure to get the most out of your browser! Pale Moon offers you a browsing experience in a browser completely built from its own source with carefully selected features and optimizations to maximize the browser's speed*, stability and user experience, while maintaining compatibility with thousands of Firefox extensions many have come to love and rely on. Features: Optimized for modern processors Firefox-based: As safe as Mozilla's flagship browser Supported by a friendly, active community of users Familiar, efficient, fully customizable interface (no Australis!) Smooth and speedy page drawing and script processing Increased stability: experience fewer browser crashes Support for Firefox extensions (add-ons) and themes Uses slightly less memory because of disabled optional code Support for SVG, Canvas and downloadable fonts Extensive support for HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL More customization and configuration options than Firefox Able to use existing Firefox profiles with the migration tool Changelog (v28.7.0) Changes/fixes: Landed a large JavaScript parser tune-up, which as a targeted goal brings our ES6 stringification fully in line with the ES2018 revision for classes, and implements rest/spread parameters for object literals. (Cheers to Luke!) Fixed a crash with the tuned-up parser code when certain error messages were triggered. Aligned browser behavior with mainstream regarding inner window behavior when domain is manipulated. Improved performance dealing with frame properties. Improved performance for handling html5 strings. Improved performance of image content loading. Fixed potential type confusion in array joins. Fixed an issue on some pages causing high CPU usage when wrongly specifying plugin content. Fixed an issue with the add-ons manager "discover" pane if no network connection is present. Fixed an issue with bookmark/history search results offering context menu options that would be invalid without a selection. Fixed the devtools JSON viewer and enabled it by default. Fixed searching from about:home not working for search plugins using the POST method. Fixed an issue with the checkboxes for location bar preferences. Fixed SVG alignment issues if SVG-containing elements fall on odd pixel sizes, causing blurry display of especially small SVGs like icons/glyphs. SVGs will now always be pixel-snapped to provide expected crisp display. Fixed precompilation of Sync client modules when packaging. This also removes the redundant services.sync.enabled pref. Added support for matroska containers and h264-based webm video formats. Added support for AAC audio in matroska and webm video formats. Added support for spaces in the Mac package and application name. Added an exception to the unique file origin policy for font types. Added native file picker support for xdg on Linux. Updated the default bookmark icons. Updated the SQLite lib to 3.29.0. Removed e10s information from about:troubleshooting. Removed hotfix leftovers. Removed the WebIDE developer tool. Removed conditional build-time disabling of the Pale Moon status bar code. Removed "Delete this page" and "Forget about this site" links from live bookmarks (since they make no sense on feeds). Removed the Financial Times' polyfill user-agent override since they updated their detection to work with Pale Moon. New Start menu on Windows 10 20H1 should look like this

New Start menu on Windows 10 20H1 should look like this While many of us don’t want a Live Tile-less Windows 10 experience, Microsoft has decided to move on from almost a decade old UI to pave the way for a new Start menu experience. From what we have seen so far, the Live Tile-alternative in leaked Build 18947 isn’t promising and frankly, it’s not a worthy competitor. Windows 10 users voiced a similar opinion and rejected the alternative outright. Notably, Steven Sinofsky who was also the brain behind the Windows 8 UI didn’t like the new design that is expected to replace the Live Tiles. While the new design is in a development phase and will receive many improvements before it ships to the public, based on the leaked build, Twitter user @Scoots37 has designed a new Start menu that seems very close to what Microsoft wants to achieve. In my opinion, the new Start menu on Windows 10 20H1 should look exactly like this, or better. If Microsoft ends up making the new Start menu look this good., would you finally stop missing the Live Tile UI? Source: New Start menu on Windows 10 20H1 should look like this (MSPoweruser)

File Explorer and Microsoft Forms get updated with new icons

File Explorer and Microsoft Forms get updated with new icons As a part of implementing fluent design across the Operating System, Microsoft has been updating icons of all the first-party apps and services. Around four months back, Microsoft released the new Office Icons for Windows Insiders and it was followed by a public rollout. Now Microsoft is planning to add new icons to two more first-party services. First spotted by Aggiornamenti Lumia, the Windows 10 File Explorer will also be getting new icon soon. Not only that, but Microsoft has also updated the Microsoft Forms icon silently. While we couldn’t spot the new File Explorer icon, the new Forms icon shows up on OneNote. Unfortunately, the updated Forms icon is currently added to just the OneNote app. We expect Microsoft to update the icons soon for everyone. Microsoft will roll out 19H2 update to Windows 10 users soon and while it will be a minor update, we might see new icons for most of the first-party apps and services. India Loses Contact with Vikram Lander During Historic Moon Landing Attempt

India Loses Contact with Vikram Lander During Historic Moon Landing Attempt India lost contact with its Vikram lunar lander Friday (Sept. 6) during a daring attempt to make history as the first country to land near the south pole. The landing anomaly may have dashed Indian dreams of becoming just the fourth country to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the moon. Long, tense minutes stretched out inside the mission control center for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which designed the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had arrived onsite at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, India, about half an hour before touchdown of the landed component, dubbed Vikram, was scheduled to take place. That announcement came at 4:48 p.m. EDT (2048 GMT) from K. Sivan, the director of ISRO. "Vikram lander descent was as planned and normal performance was observed up to an altitude of 2.1 kilometers [1.3 miles]," Sivan said in an announcement at mission control. "Subsequently the communications from the lander to the ground station was lost. The data is being analyzed." Data comparing the planned trajectory of the Vikram lander with telemetry from the spacecraft. (Image credit: ISRO) Modi spoke after Sivan's announcement, appearing to bolster downcast spirits in mission control as they investigated the issue. "Be courageous," he said. "What we achieved is not small," Modi added. "Wish you all the best." Sivan did not specify when ISRO would be able to provide updates about the fate of the Vikram lander. According to data shown during the descent maneuver, the lowest altitude reported back to Earth was 0.2 miles (0.33 kilometers) above the lunar surface. A plot comparing live data received to the mission's trajectory suggested that Vikram was about 0.6 miles (1 km) horizontally off-track from the targeted landing site when communications stopped. "India is proud of our scientists!" Modi wrote in a Twitter update shortly after learning of the anomaly. "They've given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be!" "We remain hopeful and will continue working hard on our space programme," he added. Chandrayaan-2 consisted of three components — an orbiter, a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan — which together launched to the moon on July 22 atop a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) rocket. It took nearly 7 weeks to arrive at its destination; Chandrayaan-2 arrived in lunar orbit on Aug. 20, and the lander separated from the orbiter on Sept. 2 to begin its descent to the lunar surface. The lander and the rover were designed to spend one lunar day — about 14 Earth days — investigating the lunar surface with a variety of scientific instruments. Both were expected to shutdown come nightfall at the moon's south pole, because they weren't built to withstand to frigid temperatures of the lunar night. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with ISRO director K. Sivan after the agency lost communications with the Vikram lander. (Image credit: ISRO) Despite the demise of the Pragyan lunar rover and Vikram lander, the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter will continue studying the moon from afar for about a year. From its vantage point at an altitude of about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the moon's surface, the orbiter uses eight scientific instruments and cameras to study Earth's natural satellite from afar. The following are among the payloads: An X-ray spectrometer to measure the abundance of different elements on the moon. A solar X-ray Monitor, which studies high-energy radiation from the sun. A dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar to map the lunar surface. The Chandrayaan-2 Atmospheric Compositional Explorer 2 (CHACE 2), which studies the composition of the moon's exosphere, or ultrathin atmosphere. A radio science experiment that will study electrons in the moon's ionosphere. Today's possible failure may mark the second time ISRO has crash-landed a spacecraft on the moon. The country's first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008 and consisted of only an orbiter, which successfully conducted vital research at the moon, and an impactor. Chadrayaan-1 operated for about 10 months. Chandrayaan-2 bears some similarities to Chandrayaan-1, but it carried new and improved technologies that ISRO is testing for future planetary missions — like its next mission to Mars. India had announced tentative plans to launch a third moon mission called Chandrayaan-3 in 2024. Like Chandrayaan-2, that mission would include a lunar rover. India was striving to become the fourth country to soft-land on the lunar surface, after the United States, Russia and China. The fatal crash of the Vikram lander comes just months after Israel's first moon mission, Beresheet, met a similar fate. But unlike Beresheet, Chandrayaan-2's mission lives on in the orbiter that will circle the moon, alone two weeks before its time. The internet may be vulnerable to state intervention, but demonstrators in Hong Kong have found a way around it to stay connected to each other. As pro-democracy rallies rage in the territory, protestors are increasingly giving up on SMS, emails and China’s social media Swiss army knife WeChat in favor of peer-to-peer mesh networking apps like Bridgefy and FireChat. With the government keeping a close eye on social networks — homegrown and elsewhere — in an attempt to stifle dissent, these off-the-grid messaging apps have proven to be a blessing in disguise. According to Forbes, downloads of Bridgefy has skyrocketed by 4,000 percent over the past 60 days, citing metrics from Apptopia. Both apps work without the internet or traditional phone services. Users on the platform, instead, rely on short-range communication protocols like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios in the phone to communicate directly with other devices within 200ft – 330ft (60m – 100m) that are also running Bridgefy or FireChat. To chat over longer distances, your messages simply jump between nearby users — creating a mesh network — until it reaches the intended target. What’s more, “the people in the middle don’t have access to your messages, have to perform any action whatsoever, or have to be in your contacts list.” Based on statistics from Apptrace, Bridgefy’s ranking on Apple’s App Store climbed from #973 in late June to #6 as of September 1. It has a similar jump on Android, where the app is positioned at #2. On the other hand, FireChat’s ranking on iOS and Android is in the 50’s — a big increase from below 300 levels before June. The recent wave of anti-government protests in Hong Kong — which began in early June — were sparked by a bill (since suspended, but not withdrawn) that would allow people accused of crimes against mainland China to be extradited. While the former British colony enjoys a special status that grants people rights and freedom not seen in the mainland, the move has attracted criticism because of potential concerns that China is tightening its grip over the region. In addition to undermining Hong Kong‘s judicial independence, the proposal could also have been used to target civilians who speak out against the Chinese government. As a result, the protesters want Hong Kong authorities to formally withdraw the now-abandoned extradition bill, set up an inquiry commission to investigate police brutality in tackling the protests, exonerate those who have been arrested during previous protests, and stop characterizing the June protests as “riots.” The situation, at present, has evolved beyond the initial scope to protest against the erosion of the special freedoms in Hong Kong. Although there is nothing to stop the authorities from hopping on to the network as well, this is not the first time the apps have played a crucial role in circumventing censorship. FireChat has already been used in protests in Taiwan, Iran and Iraq, and even Hong Kong back in 2014 to rally against China’s limitation of voter rights. Messaging app Telegram, for its part, is said to be rolling out a new group chat feature to safeguard protesters’ identities from being discovered by authorities in mainland China and Hong Kong officials. While these upswings may be a repeated trend, the apps’ purpose as a giant megaphone hasn’t gone unnoticed. “People are using it to organize themselves and to stay safe, without having to depend on an Internet connection,” Bridgefy CEO Jorge Rios said. Astronomers Detect a Mammoth Planet With The Most Extreme Orbit We've Ever Seen

The exoplanet's orbit overlaid on the Solar System. The planets and Sun are not to scale. (W. M. Keck Observatory/Adam Makarenko) Astronomers Detect a Mammoth Planet With The Most Extreme Orbit We've Ever Seen Astronomers have found an exoplanet with an absolute doozy of an orbit. Rather than a nice, more-or-less circular path around its star, the exoplanet HR 5183 b slingshots around more like a comet - a long, elliptical orbit with the star at one end of the oval. It's the first time any exoplanet has been found with such a bizarre orbital path. If HR 5183 b were in our Solar System, it would swing in closer than the orbit of Jupiter, and then way out farther than the orbit of Neptune. Although many other exoplanets have been found with elliptical orbits, they have been nowhere near as extreme. "This planet is unlike the planets in our Solar System, but more than that, it is unlike any other exoplanets we have discovered so far," said astronomer Sarah Blunt of Caltech. "Other planets detected far away from their stars tend to have very low eccentricities, meaning that their orbits are more circular. The fact that this planet has such a high eccentricity speaks to some difference in the way that it either formed or evolved relative to the other planets." HR 5183 b is a massive gas giant that orbits a Sun-like main sequence star called HR 5183 around 103 light-years away. Because the exoplanet's orbit is so weird - it takes around 74 years to orbit the star, swooping out as far as over 30 astronomical units - the team got really lucky in detecting it. They managed to capture it at periastron, its closest approach. That's less than 5 astronomical units. It took a lot of patience. The star was under long-term surveillance as part of an exoplanet search using the radial velocity method. This is a very reliable method for finding exoplanets, based on the very slight movement of the star as it is tugged out of place by the gravity of its orbiting bodies. For close-orbiting planets that take just days to whip around the star, this doesn't require a lot of time. But if you want to find distant exoplanets with orbits on the scale of years, decades or even centuries, you have to put in a lot of time. That's why the star was being monitored. Then, after 10 years, something weird happened. The star started rapidly accelerating - pulled by the exoplanet's three-Jupiter mass. In 2018, the radial velocity measurements turned over and flattened out. "This planet spends most of its time loitering in the outer part of its star's planetary system in this highly eccentric orbit, then it starts to accelerate in and does a slingshot around its star," said Caltech astronomer Andrew Howard. "We detected this slingshot motion. We saw the planet come in and now it's on its way out. That creates such a distinctive signature that we can be sure that this is a real planet, even though we haven't seen a complete orbit." The slingshot is a bit like the gravity assist manoeuvre spacecraft sometimes perform to get a speed boost. It flings the planet back out into the far reaches of the stellar system, where it eventually will reach its farthest point - apastron - and loop back again. But how did it get that way? The observational evidence suggests that planets are formed from the circular disc of leftover material that didn't get slurped up into the star as it was forming. So, if things remain calm, planets should maintain a relatively circular orbit. But we know comets can change their orbital paths when they interact gravitationally with larger Solar System bodies, and that provides a clue as to what could have happened with HR 5183 b. The most likely scenario, the researchers said, was that HR 5183 b was once neighboured by another planet of similar size. When they got close enough to each other, the gravitational interaction could have kicked HR 5183 b into its weird orbit - and booted the other planet out of the stellar system entirely. It seems the more we discover about exoplanets, the weirder they get. We've seen huge exoplanets orbiting a tiny star. There's an exoplanet that's being rapidly evaporated by its star. There's an exoplanet with three suns, and an exoplanet with vaporised rare-Earth metals in its atmosphere. Maybe even exoplanets like giant space eyeballs. And now HR 5153 b, the exoplanet rocketing around its star on a wildly elliptical orbit. "It's just been one surprise after another in this field," Howard said. "This newfound planet is another example of a system that is not the image of our Solar System but has remarkable features that make our Universe incredibly rich in its diversity." The research is due to appear in The Astrophysical Journal, and is available on the pre-print website arXiv. Source: Astronomers Detect a Mammoth Planet With The Most Extreme Orbit We've Ever Seen

Anti-Piracy Efforts Are Unlikely to Beat Sci-Hub

Elsevier and other academic publishers see 'pirate' site Sci-Hub as a major threat to their billion-dollar industries. Many researchers, however, can't function properly without the notorious site. Since anti-piracy efforts are unlikely to beat the site, perhaps it's time for the publishers to draw a lesson from Sci-Hub instead? Sci-Hub has often been referred to as “The Pirate Bay of Science,” but that description really sells the site short. While both sites are helping the public to access copyrighted content without permission, Sci-Hub has also become a crucial tool that arguably helps the progress of science. The site allows researchers to bypass expensive paywalls so they can read articles written by their fellow colleagues. The information in these ‘pirated’ articles is then used to provide the foundation for future research. What the site does is not permitted, according to the law, but in the academic world, Sci-Hub is praised by many. In particular, those who don’t have direct access to expensive journals but aspire to excel in their academic field. This leads to a rather intriguing situation where many of the ‘creators,’ the people who write academic articles, are openly supporting the site. By doing so, they go directly against the major publishers, including the billion-dollar company Elsevier, which are the rightsholders. Elsevier previously convinced the courts that Sci-Hub is a force of evil. Many scientists, however, see it as an extremely useful tool. This was illustrated once again by a ‘letter to the editor’ Dr. Prasanna R Deshpande sent to the Journal of Health & Allied Sciences recently. While Deshpande works at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at Poona College of Pharmacy, his latest writing is entirely dedicated to copyright and Sci-Hub. In his published letter (no paywall), the researcher explains why a site such as Sci-Hub is important for the scientific community as a whole. The Indian researcher points out that Sci-Hub’s main advantage is that it’s free of charge. This is particularly important for academics in developing countries, who otherwise don’t have the means to access crucial articles. Sci-Hub actually allows these people to carry out better research. “A researcher generally has to pay some money ($30 or more per article on an average) for accessing the scholarly articles. However, the amount may not be ‘small’ for a researcher/research scholar, especially from a developing country,” Deshpande notes. Aside from the cost issue, Sci-hub is often seen as more convenient as well. Many professors use the site and a recent survey found that it’s used to conduct research by 62.5% of all medical students across six countries in Latin America. According to Deshpande, these and other arguments lead to the conclusion that Sci-Hub should be supported, at least until there is a good alternative. “Reading updated knowledge is one of the essential parts of lifelong learning. Currently, Sci‑Hub is the only answer for this. Therefore, Sci‑Hub has various advantages because of which it should be supported,” Deshpande concludes. This is of course just the opinion of one researcher, but the web is riddled with similar examples. A simple Twitter search shows that many academics are sharing Sci-Hub links among each other, and some have even created dedicated websites to show some of the latest working Sci-Hub mirrors. The major publishers are obviously not happy with this. Aside from lawsuits against Sci-Hub, they regularly send takedown notices to sites that link to infringing articles, including Google. Recently Elsevier took it a step further by going after Citationsy, a tool that allows academics and researchers to manage citations and reference lists. The service previously published a blog post summing up some options for people to download free research articles. This blog post also linked to Sci-Hub. Elsevier clearly didn’t like this, and sent its lawyer after Citationsy, requesting it to remove the link. Citantionsy founder Cenk Özbakır initially wasn’t sure how to respond. Linking to a website isn’t necessarily copyright infringement. However, challenging a multi-billion dollar company on an issue like this is a battle that’s hard to win. Eventually, Özbakır decided to remove it, pointing to a Google search instead. However, not without being rather critical of the move by Elsevier and its law firm Bird & Bird. “I have of course taken down any links to Sci-Hub on Citationsy.com. @ElsevierLabs obviously thinks making money is more important than furthering science. Congratulations, @twobirds! We all now that the only thing this will achieve is less people reading papers,” Özbakır wrote on Twitter. The ‘linking’ issue was later picked up by BoingBoing which also pointed out that many of Elsevier’s own publications include links to Sci-Hub, as we also highlighted in the past. While not all researchers are unanimously backing Sci-Hub, it appears that this type of enforcement may not be the best way forward. Pressuring people with cease and desist notices, filing lawsuits, and sending takedown notices certainly isn’t sustainable in the long term, especially if they target people in the academic community. Perhaps Elsevier and other publishers should use the massive popularity of Sci-Hub as a signal that something is clearly wrong with what they are offering. Instead of trying to hide piracy by sweeping it under the rug, Elsevier could learn from it and adapt. VIEW: Original Article.
