The Best Games Of 2011 ... So Far

With 2011 now halfway over it's time to take a quick look back to see what console and PC games peaked our interest in the first half of the year. While there are certainly a number of upcoming games that we are looking forward to there have been a number of titles that have already come out in 2011 that we have enjoyed. We also have picked a game that didn't meet even our low expectations.

o144R.jpg

Bulletstorm - Developers People Can Fly and Epic Games made an entertaining sci-fi first person shooter that recalls the great action games of the late 1990s combined with the the "skill shot" feature that allowed players to do more than just simple head shots to get points. Combine that gameplay with some great action set pieces in the single player and some entertaining multiplayer modes and you have a game that never gets boring.

T9m3r.jpg

Mortal Kombat - After a brief side trip into "T" rating territory with Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe, the former Midway game franchise returned in April with a new publisher (Warner Bros Interactive) but with the same development team. The result was an ultra-violent but stilll fun throwback to all of the things that made the earlier games so great; a 2D level design, great gameplay, lots of extras and of course the "fatalities" that make the Mortal Kombat series so different than the flood of Japanese developed fighting games.

QGFzr.jpg

Portal 2 - Valve once again proved they are among the best game developers in the business. While the sequel to 2007's "mini-game" in The Orange Box collection doesn't have that sense of wonder that the first game had with its portal puzzle gameplay, it's more than made up with a well constructed single player campaign, lots of humor, some challenging but not frustrating puzzles and an even more fun two player co-op campaign mode.

N15I2.jpg

LA Noire - Even with all the Internet reports of the reported issues with developing this game, Team Bondi's final result is a new twist on the open world crime action game series. Set in the 1940s in the real city of Los Angeles instead of some fictional setting, LA Noire concentrates less on the action and more about detective works and characters as you move up in the ranks of the LAPD. If you like games that tell good stories and make you think in order to accomplish goals, this game is for you.

Bbtld.jpg

The Witcher 2 - CD Projekt Red's sequel to the best selling PC RPG gave role playing fans a deep storyline, lots of quests, a great looking game engine and mature subject matter (i.e. sex). The final product is one of the best fantasy RPG titles you can get. It's even better when you consider that CD Projekt Red, via a patch, has eliminated all DRM set-ups from all of the game's versions.

2011's Biggest Disappointment So Far: Duke Nukem Forever - We admit that we had low expectations for this game that's been in development for 15 years. However we hoped that we could ignore the dated graphics, the linear nature of the game's levels and the lame attempts at humor if the game was fun to play. However the final product actually surprised us: it was boring, and that shouldn't be the case for a game featuring the Main Man.

I'll nominate Portal 2 for one of the game of a lifetime. :)

Bulletstorm was quite fun; The Witcher 2 is a masterpiece - but the last act is hugely disappointing, spoiling the whole game. Portal 2 and Duke Nukem forever were wasted bandwidth for me; uninstalled both after one hour of gameplay or so.

What about Crysis 2 ? Being the driver of Nanosuit 2.0 and smashing Crynet / aliens is so fun.

Also, Liked Portal 2, it was really good.

Also, A.I. in Bulletstorm wasn't good at all. i believe that King Kong is much smarter than Ishi or General.

Duke Nukem Forever: was pretty lame, I felt like I was playing a parody!

F.E.A.R 3: a damn good game but not for the faint hearted, literally!

Dragon Age 2: I couldn't even get myself to play it for more than 30 seconds, the controls and the camera make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to play it on PC.

Crysis 2: this one game that the checkpoint system doesn't work for it, it REALLy needed manual saving since checkpoints are TOO far apart which makes it boring after a while since you have to repeat a large portion when you die.

Bulletstorm: nice game, good for venting your aggression *grins*

In my opinion, Crysis 2 and Dragon Age II alongside with Portal 2 are the best games of 2011 so far.

Bulletstorm was a funny game, not very professional but overall good game.

We also forgot DiRT 3, tried it for hours and like it, it's graphic is too much better than the other racing games; I'm not very interested in rally games but DiRT is really something else.

Have nothing to say about F.3.A.R and The Witcher 2.

I installed Portal 2, got out of the tutorial which asked me to look up, down and sideways, and then I had no idea how the game works or what it is about and I ultimately had to uninstall the game. The Witcher 2: Is a nice game, but had to ditch it after series of failed attempts to kill Kayran (since I couldn't prepare the Mongoose portion, even after I got that thing needed for it from the cave). Crysis 2: I had a pretty rough time surviving in this game; I get killed often, and as Lohen mentioned, checkpoints make it even worse. DiRT 3: were a great game, but I had to do the same kind of races again and again, and I got bored and ditched it. Bulletstrom: installed it once, played for 5 minutes and uninstalled it right away - I'm recosidering playing this game again after I've read some good reviews about the game. Metro2033: Scares the crap out of me, couldn't get past the "Dead City" mission. I still have a hard time sleeping at night.

Dragon Age 2 could have been marvellous, if not for the repeating caves (who played it know what I'm talking about). Still, I hope a expansion will come for it that's long enough and fixes everything in a superb new adventure :P And then, DA3!

Is Dragon Age 2 a good, if not the best game to play?

Is actually a big disappointment, but still very fun. It could have been so much more though :(

Dragon Age II was a very good and I love it so much and in my opinion it was an awesome game but it could be better, yes, agree on this.

But still today, I believe DA:O was something else, when it released I told myself "It's another bullshit" and when I installed and played it, I didn't understand what happened, it was really awesome, the storyline was the best part of game, this game changed my life; I finished the game 2-3 times and played all DLCs.

Only two games inspired me so much and changed my life and made me to think about them for many months, Max Payne 2 and Dragon Age: Origins (+ Awakening); the stroyline of these games affected and inspired me so much.

Dragon Age II could be better but still I think it's very best in it's category and it should be remembered in history of game industry alongside with first version.

The story, eh?

This is why I like to play games... That's why I'm not good at driving, boxing, or casual gaming - no serious story behind.

DA:O is not a revolutionary game, but it was almost perfect for me. Of course, they almost destroyed it with the last DLC... Wonder what will happen to Morrigan? I assume she will be back in DA3, together with Leliana maybe :P

The re-using of the environments was horrible in DA2. I have never seen such a bad decision from a major player. Was dumbstruck when I realised this was intentional by Bioware.

If you loved the DA saga, why don't you try the KOTOR games? Yes the graphics are outdated, but the story is better than in DA ;) And if you're into sci-fi and Star Wars, it gets even better still.

Also, Mass Effect games are pretty story driven, and I was disappointed to find out that ME3 was delayed to 2012.

About Portal 2, once GlaDos (the villain) awakes, about after half hour of the game, the game changes altogether. There's a real deep story in Portal 2, has about 3 big twists in the plot and has the most artistic ending a game could ever have. The story and the ending has a huge influence on the people that liked Portal 2. I almost cried in the ending (yea kinda felt like that because of the back story. :P ). Once you jump, see up/down, you go to bed, you wake up and open the main door. After that your room is moved everywhere and once come at a halt you start your journey.

I'm playing Dirt 3 right now, I'm not liking the gymkhana mode that much. But so far so good. :)

Yet to play Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition. ^_^

How do you play Portal 2? I have no idea what to. I had this gun thing in my hand and then I I fired it and it made a blue hole on the ground, as soon as I walked over it, it changed the view like I were upside down. I've read plenty of reviews and they all have high ratings of the game, but I have no clue how to play this game, sadly :(

There are two portals. One is blue and one is orange. You go into either one of them and you come out of the other. Go into blue, come out of the orange one; and vise verse. At first while you are learning, you can only fire blue ones, but orange ones are already made by the game. After you have done the basics, you are allowed to shoot both blue and orange. Also, you can only fire (either of the portal) on white surfaces / walls. Just see couple of portal 2 starting videos you'll understand. :)

Dunno about basics, but for walkthroughs you can type "howcast portal 2 chapter 1" (without quotes) on youtube to see how to solve puzzles. :)

Crysis 2 has to be among the top for now..beautiful engine and it didn't melt my PC!

Just about to get fear 3...

Portal 2... well best valve game since Half-life 2 + counter strike source...that's telling you something!! (Well.. tf2 could sneak up there too, but disliked the change for real money items...it was good whilst it lasted...btw for any one that didn't know, it is now free 2 play).

Awaiting the david v goliath Battlefield 3 vs Mw3... hopefully infinity ward actually DOES something, but at this stage looks like BF3 will blow mw3 out of the water....

SSF4: arcade edition is one of the best, most balanced rostered fighting games ever made, apart from yun/yang. But ss4 always had that unique quality of the same fighter being played in completely different fashions effectively, e.g. Ibuki.

  • 2 weeks later...

Being a former Witcher junkie, I thought it'd be a tall order to top it...how wrong I was. Witcher 2 is indeed a masterpiece with a storyline that will not be bested for some time imo. Just make sure your rig is up to the challenge, this is one 'beautiful' game. ;)
