Miley Cyrus Used as Lure in New Facebook Scam

A new survey scam is propagating on Facebook by promising credulous users provocative imagery with Miley Cyrus, who will celebrate her eighteenth birthday tomorrow.

The American actress, famous for her role as Hannah Montana in the Disney television series and film adaptation of the same name, has been targeted by cybercriminals before.

In 2007, a hacker known online as TrainReq, abusively obtained access to the Gmail account of then 15-year-old tv star and leaked provocative photos found inside.

These included pictures of young Cyrus barring her midriff in front of a mirror in the bathroom while in her underwear.

It seems that one of those images is now used by scammers on Facebook to trick people into participating in deceptive surveys.

The scam starts with messages that read "Miley Cyrus went too far with her hot boyfriend. Wow! she is wild," being posted from the victims' accounts.

Clicking on the advertised link takes overly curious users to a page showing a video thumbnail, which depicts Cyrus raising her t-shirt with her teeth.

Attempting to play the video launches a rogue Facebook application that asks users for permission to post on their walls, among other things.

This app serves as the scam's propagation mechanism and users who misguidedly grant it access to their profiles end up spamming their friends.

Following the rogue app prompt, users are asked to take one of several surveys, all of which try to silently sign them up for premium rate services.

If you fell victim to this scam, go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites and remove the rogue app from there.

Also make sure to delete all spam messages from your wall by clicking the x sign which appears when hovering the mouse cursor over them.
