We tested it with a server log file, which compressed with ZIP had a file size of 18 Mb and using 7-Zip was reduced to 8 mb (results may vary, depending on file type). 7Zip supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB formats, so it can be used with all popular archive files. The program offers a basic file explorer interface and also integrates into the Windows right-click menu. It can be associated with any of the supported formats and also offers command-line support.

Not really IMO. To get compression from 7-Zip equal to WinRAR's, you have to use LZMA2 method. But if you use LZMA2 method, the RAM usage is quite high during compression. Even after that it only beats WinRAR's compression in some file types. Not to forget that at default, 7-Zip will solid compress the files, even WinRAR has this feature but not as default, solid compression may get better compression % but if one file gets damaged, whole archive would be useless.

7z gets better compression ratios in some formats and with certain file types.. However WinRAR is comparable in some areas.. WinRAR's UI is a little more friendly and offers more options.. truthfully if you choose to have between the two.. I would have to go with 7Zip.... Both integrate with the Context Menu, and both can have themes.. but I have both installed and they are the only two I have ever needed...

EDIT: What DK said.. LOL

My support for 7-zip is up and down with more information and understanding I get of it. From what I can see, LZMA2 has been able to compress almost uncompressable files by 2-3% (thats good if you have a huge file). But with others, I'm seeing slight better compression ratio with WinRAR. And I'm testing lots and lots files to say that. For general compression I feel WinRAR is better.

Well, 7zip is opensource so there's always a room for improvement and will surely improve more in future. I haven't seen many updates from WinRAR's side though.

Yeah WinRAR gets the most usage on mine.. particularly from the side point of extracting from Context Menu.. of downloaded files.. 7-Zip personally.. I like when I am packaging files that will be accessed by all OSes.. You have the option of putting it into a format which can be used or access by default for others.. in the past.. though OSes have changed and more formats can be used by a wider range.. There are some programs which access gzip types.. and those files may need something like 7Zip.. WinRAR.. you have ZIP or RAR.. which most can use a zip.. now.. but used to it wasn't the case..
