A new Facebook scam tricks users into participating in surveys with promises of an application capable of displaying alerts when friends delete or unfollow them.

According to Facecrooks, the scam is propagated through compromised accounts, which share a link to the rogue application page.

The associated spam message reads: "See who your friends really are! Check to see who has deleted you."

The application is called "loyalfriends" and at the time of writing, is still online. It claims to regularly check the user's friends to see if anyone has removed them.

"When it detects that someone has removed or blocked you, a message will popup informing you who it was and a link to there [sic.] profile," the description reads.

On install, the application will request permission to access the user's basic information, send them email, post on their walls, access their profile data at any time and manage their pages.

Allowing this to happen is clearly a bad idea and will cause people to unintentionally spam their friends and family with the aforementioned messages.

Misguided users, who end up installing the application, won't get the promised functionality. Instead, they will be prompted to complete a survey, allegedly for human verification purposes.

Users are even instructed to complete more than one survey, if the page is not unlocked after five minutes; and of course it will never be.

The purpose of the surveys is to trick users into subscribing to premium rate services, therefore earning money for the scammers via affiliate marketing.

The scam is similar in concept to an older one, that promised an app capable of listing profile visitors, despite this functionality being prohibited on the social network due to its privacy implications.

Facebook recently announced a crackdown on spam and even launched legal action against three alleged scammers.
