Browser Guard 2010 can protect against sophisticated web attacks such as Hydraq

Security vendor Trend Micro has added to its growing range of free security offerings with a tool designed to improve the safety of web browsing.

Trend Micro Browser Guard 2010 is a browser plug-in which identifies and blocks malicious web pages in real time before they can harm a user's PC, according to the firm.

The product has been designed to protect against sophisticated threats such as the Hydraq family which was used to such effective ends in the Operation Aurora attacks by Chinese hackers on Google and other firms at the beginning of the year.

These attacks worked partly by inserting malicious JavaScript into web pages in an attempt to exploit older versions of Internet Explorer.

Browser Guard 2010 protects against similar attacks by analysing and blocking the malicious JavaScript from exploiting vulnerabilities or performing malicious activities, said Trend Micro.

It also hooks up with the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network to ensure that users are protected from the latest web-based threats.

"Web surfers face a number of different threats today which can take the form of bogus banking or shopping sites as well as web sites which, at first glance, look legitimate but are in fact malicious and set up to capture sensitive information such as passwords and credit card details," warned David Sancho, security researcher at Trend Micro.
