Guidelines and Templates

This document is intended to clarify the usage of the "Software Updates" forum at nsane.forums and to give guidance to our members of the preferred format of any updates. This document will be updated. It is your responsibility to be 'up to date' with its content. These guidelines are in addition to and not instead of the Forum Rules.

  • General Guidelines:
    • Software updates for applications listed on the nsane.down frontpage should be posted in this forum instead (the template doesn't need to be used in that forum). If you are unsure of which applications are listed, use the "Quick Downloads Search" on nsane.down.
    • Links to illegal content are not allowed as per the Guidelines. Please see the 'sharecode system';
    • Search before posting. Please ensure your update hasn't been already posted.
    • Test your download before posting, make sure it is working and not infected. [We recommend the use of VirusTotal.com]. We will delete and possibly take further action against members if items are not tested.
    • Members should create a new topic for each new version of an application. This makes it easier for others keep track of new releases. (Updating topic titles for a new version should be avoided).
    • Whenever possible, members should provide download links from the software developer homepage, rather than uploading it to their own file host. If we feel that a member is consistently breaking this rule (for example to earn "Points" on a file hosting service), we will take further action.
    • Don't bother mirroring other people's files unless the links are dead or someone specifically asks for a mirror. Members shouldn't care about earning points, but helping others - we are a community website;
    • It's not a competition about who can post the most updates. We would rather have posted only a selected amount of the "best" software updates. Quality is more important than quantity.
    • We don't care if it's a "full" version or not, as such don't bother including this information in the topic title or description.
    • Cash or Affiliate links are not allowed. Warnings will be issued if this isn't followed.
    • Members should use the "Downloads Template" shown below. By using a standard format, we make the community easier to access;.
    • Non Microsoft Windows software updates should be tagged as such, i.e. [Mac], [Linux], followed by the topic title.
    • Mobile Software Updates should be posted in this forum instead.
  • Post Requirements
    • We require all posts to include the following information at a minimum:

      • Application name and version (before anything else) in the title;

      • Any additional information in the title should be separated from the application name and version with a dash (-).

      • A description of the software (you can usually just copy and paste this description from the developer's homepage);

      • A detailed list of changes from the previous version (again, this can be just copied and pasted from the developer's homepage). If there is a large amount of changes, you may prefer to link to the list of changes on the software's homepage;

      • A link to the developer's homepage;

      • A Download link.

  • The following information is also preferred to be included in any update:

    • A screenshot of the software item during usage (this could be a link to a set of screenshots on the software's homepage);

    • A included .nfo file when posting any fixes;

    • Your comments about the software and its benefits when compared to similar products.

  • Other Information
    • If there's any kind of infection (malware) involved, please immediately contact the staff using the 'Report' button, and include a VirusTotal.com report if possible. This allows prompt action to be taken (when required);
    • If a posted item has already been posted or is "old news", please let the staff know via the 'Report' button and it will be dealt with accordingly;
    • When a link doesn't work (for you), please make a post in the topic explaining your issue;
    • Any questions should be directed to the site staff.
