Forum thread sort order

If a user changes the thread sort order in a forum, is that change supposed to stick for future openings of that forum?

For example, whenever I open the "General News" forum, the threads are listed in "Start Date" order. If I change the sort order to "Recently Updated", then close the tab and reopen that forum in a new tab, the threads are back to sorting by  "Start Date".

Most forums seem to always revert to "Start Date" on reopening, a few are stuck on "Recently Updated", but none of the ones I tested ever remember my sort order change.

Happening to me with both iOS Safari and Windows Firefox.

I've gone though my profile and account settings and can't see a setting for default or forum specific sort order. Apologies if I've missed it.

Sorry, but it's annoying to have to change the sort order every time I open a forum to see recent activity. :)

This settings how to sort posts by default is possible set from admin panel and is possible set for every forum category separately. If it is set, then it is so. If You want sort differently, You must do it manually or use special url
For example

https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=last_post&sortdirection=desc     -     Recently Updated
https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=title&sortdirection=asc     -     Title
https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=start_date&sortdirection=desc     -     Start Date
https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=views&sortdirection=desc     -     Most Viewed
https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=posts&sortdirection=desc     -     Most Replies
https://www.nsaneforums.com/forum/4-general-news/?sortby=forums_topics.last_post&sortdirection=desc&advancedSearchForm=1"     -     Custom Sort

desc = descending, ie begins from newest
asc = ascending, ie begins from oldest

You can freely change between sort ascending or descending, simply change asc to desc and vice versa.
If Your webbrowser is set to store Your site preferences, then it should store Your preferences and they are there still You delete or change them.
Forum don't store them as cookies.
If it is annoying to remember and every time rewrite this long url again, You have to do Your own stream (My Activity Streams ) and then You can always open it at once exactly as You want.

@Kalju  I've enabled "Accept cookies and site data" in Firefox settings, and for good measure set https://www(dot)nsaneforums(dot)com to "Allow", but my sort changes are still ignored on reopening a forum.

When I check cookies and site data for this domain, there are only some cookies, no Storage (site data?).

Looks like I'll have to remember to sort each forum each time I visit, or use a Firefox addon like Redirector to redirect the plain forum links to one with "?sortby=last_post&sortdirection=desc" appended.

You are right. Does not seems to be remembering them. Have no option in site settings available for us to give options to users to decide either. Can be counted as IPB bug this.

As an interim measure for consistency, would it be possible to make the default sort order the same for all forums and sub-forums?

Currently for example, the General News forum sorts threads by "Start Date", but the Software News forum sorts by "Recently Updated".

"Recently Updated" would be my suggestion, latest activity at the top makes the most sense to me.

This had been an issue of contention between me and shought some time ago. :P From what I can remember, I called for uniformity across the forums whereas shought, rightfully so, said sorting of both news sections and chat sections cannot be same. We could not decide over it.

Still, Software News being different than other news sections was an issue that was pending from a long time. I have now fixed it. All topics in Software News will now appear sorted by Start Date.

We are still unsure whether Software Updates and Giveaways should be continued to be sorted by Start Date though.
