Windows 10 Version 1809 Comes with New Option for Rarely-Used Files

Microsoft has developed a new option for Windows 10 users that allows OneDrive to automatically make rarely-used file available exclusively online.

Technically, what this new setting does is allow files that are configured in OneDrive Files On-Demand to be available both online and offline to be removed from the local drives if they haven’t been accessed in a user-defined period of time.

This means that Windows 10 will help save storage on your hard disk by keeping data you don’t use available in your OneDrive account.

Of course, users are allowed to choose how the feature handles their files and this behavior comes disabled by default, which means that you need to enable it from the Settings app manually. It is available under Settings at the following location:

Settings > System > Storage > Choose how we free up space automatically > OneDrive

You can choose between 1 day, 14 days, 30 days, and 60 days, so Windows can automatically check whether you’ve accessed files in your synced folders within this time and then remove them to make the data available online only.

Users are also allowed to prevent this feature from removing certain files by right-clicking them and selecting the option called “Always keep on this device.”

OneDrive is becoming a more important part of the Windows experience, and this feature is a significant improvement for Files On-Demand. At the same time, Microsoft is also focusing more on ways to allow the operating system to manage the available storage more efficiently, and in the last few updates, Windows 10 got new capabilities in this regard.

With version 189, Microsoft deprecates Disk Cleanup, instead moving all its capabilities to the Settings app in order to perform more straightforward cleaning. Disk Cleanup will stick around for a little longer, but could get the ax in a future Windows 10 update.
