Not a single day without a bug in Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft hasn’t yet resumed the rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809), but this doesn’t necessarily mean that new bugs aren’t discovered anymore.

Most recently, users have come across a font issue in this OS version, with some special characters not rendered correctly within apps.

A discussion thread on reddit shows that the bug was experienced in Foobar2000, and several users confirmed the issue on their systems too. By the looks of things, everything worked correctly in Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803), but the upgrade to version 1809 broke down font substitution for Unicode characters.

“Glad I'm not the only one. Have the same problem since 1809, also with the rating stars (U+2606 ☆ and U+2605 ★) in Foobar2000. I set the playlist font to Segoe UI Symbol to fix it at least in Foobar2000,” one user explains in a post in the said thread.

Hitting Windows 10 version 1809 only

Affected users have also posted the bug in the Feedback Hub, so if you’re hitting it too on your Windows 10 version 1809 system, open this link and send an upvote.

The Unicode symbols not being displayed correctly appears to be an issue that’s limited to Windows 10 version 1809, and according to user reports, it also exists in the latest preview build that Microsoft shipped to users in the Slow and Release Preview rings.

All these insiders have received a new preview build that includes the fix for a data removal bug in Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The new OS version was originally published on October 2 for all users, but Microsoft pulled the update a few days later after discovering that the update removes some files stored in libraries.

There’s no ETA as to when the rollout could be resumed, but as you can see, Microsoft has more than just a single bug to fix before more users could get it.
