Avast Confirms Windows 10 April 2018 Update Bug, Releases Fix

Only “a small subset of customers” affected, Avast says

A bug in Windows 10 April 2018 Update rendered some computers completely useless when the upgrade was completed, and a compatibility issue with Avast antivirus was believed to be the culprit.

And while Avast originally said that it found no evidence its antivirus was causing the issues, a company engineer now says that an in-depth analysis of this behavior that was performed in collaboration with Microsoft revealed a problem did exist.

“In cooperation with Microsoft we have identified an element of the latest Windows 10 1803 update that is incompatible with the Avast Behavior Shield, causing the aforementioned update to fail in some instances (related to a timing issue, Internet connectivity issue, etc),” a post on the Avast forums reads.

A fix has already been released to Windows 10 computers running Avast and which haven’t been upgraded to the April 2018 Update just yet, the same post reveals.

“We have found a way to prevent the problem and are now automatically pushing a VPS update to all customers which makes sure that the problem doesn't happen. The VPS number is 180524-08; all users running this version (or later) should be 100% safe,” the Avast engineer adds.

Only a few customers affected

On the other hand, clients who have already attempted to upgrade their computers but instead ended up being unable to boot are recommended to try an in-place upgrade using a removable media drive. This shouldn’t cause any file loss and instead repair the Windows 10 installation.

If possible, users can also try to roll back to the previous version of Windows 10, though in most cases this process failed because booting in Safe Mode wasn’t working either.

Avast says that the bug “appears to affect only a small subset of our customers” and that it might hit some other applications as well, though no specifics are available right now.

Yesterday, it was reported that Microsoft stopped offering Windows 10 April 2018 Update to systems running Avast, but it’s not clear if the process resumed after this fix was published.

is known since long time ago, that some AV that interfere with kernel calls could affect the updates in serveral Windows versions, not only in Windows 10.

so before updating your Windows and if you are using a third part antivirus, better disable or uninstall it first, and then install the updates.

Been happening since Vista that i know of  but the thing was before Windows 10 people didn't have to upgrade every 6mths .;)

Even in Linux if you dont disable 3rd party ppas and revert back to stock open source drivers it can cause you too mess up you're  upgrade. When I was messing around with Manjaro  everytime they was a big upgrade  i had to do all kinds of stuff to keep it from messing up my install . People on Windows are use  too just being able too turn Windows on and not have to fix nothing and when they do they take it too a tech or gets a technically inclined person to fix it for them . If you was not technically inclined you would not even be reading the PC centric news and this is why Windows 10 will never be a big hit with consumers, only the technically inclined or businesses with ITs  can keep it running .

I got a friend who builds computers who had to wait and wait around on a fix on Windows 10 before because they didn't want too unplug there other drives with  there games on them Redstone 2 it was . And i  just unplugged  my extra drives and installed it clean without any troubles  even though i was getting and error when i tried to upgrade from RS1. And if daul boot with Linux and Windows every time you upgrade Windows 10 it will mess up the grub and you will only have Windows so you may as well just clean install every 6 mths if going to use this OS. Theres a million things can go wrong when upgrading.

Why you think  the techies always said before  it was always best to clean install windows before there was a Windows 10, nothing  has changed but now they push upgrades witch are just another name for  SP on consumers every 6 mths and if you're and insider you most likely going to nuke your install a few times if you install much software  on you're PC, there not even meant for production and really  when consumers get the final upgrade it's still beta and not even approved for business yet .  Everything out of  M$ mouth is aimed at  Enterprise were they  make the real  money off of, to them you're nothing but a lab rat who reports to Donna Skanky Pants.  :lmao:

Microsoft: Here's why Windows Defender AV isn't ranked higher in new antivirus tests

Post like these prove they could care less about the consumer , they love Linux and Big Enterprise and  they dont love people who pirate and got windows 10 for free are just paid half price for it .

I'ts like people who beta test AVs  they asking for loads of of trouble , Kaspersky borked my install of windows many times beta testing it , NoD32 Beta cause my Windows updates to stop working and Avast Beta caused .Net to stop working  and this way back when I used XP before 2011, so when you install new versions of windows 10 that are really still beta you should except no different than a million different bugs. They even admit using Windows Defender will slow you down if you install lots of 3rd party programs. I know when I tried it on RS 3 with W10FWC it slowed my PC way down and when I  disabled it  speed back up  and I istalled NOD32 with W10FWC it was  still fast .   B)

It was made quite clear from the first announcement of Windows 10 that consumers were nothing more than beta testers.  Even when it is ready for businesses or large organizations, if they are running Microsoft System Center they can control when or if they upgrade to the latest version without Microsoft having any say in it.  Antivirus programs are for computer illiterate people and idiots who run cracked software and visit sites without using a sandbox or VM to protect their primary system.  I can't recall the last time I had a BSOD or driver problem on any of my Windows 7 or 8.1 systems.  It has been so long that I have a BSOD that I use for a wallpaper occasionally just for the hell of it.  There is no justification in the world for upgrading to Windows 10 unless you are a sadomasochist.

Yep yep you're brain is going to tell you you have a invisible virus on you're pc from surfing the internet , not ! .. Hell you're more likely to get infected installing some legit app from some state hacker than using cracked software i been using cracked software for 17 years and in all that time only i got infected just once and that was my fault from downloading from a uploader i  did not know. And  I  had and antivirus on and it didn't work because it was 0day put in a keygen only thing that told me i had it was a firewall and Winpatrol so that proves you're theory wrong. If you dont like cracked software why do you even be on websites that have it like  this one? Is because you are the feds , or is just because you like to troll ? We dont want to hear you're off the wall shit on here. Didn't i use to see you on the old Vdown years ago as well, most warez sites would ban you for talking that crap if this was Appznet i would pm the vice president and had you had banned myself. Only reason you do it because they not so strict here  ?. ...

Lucky for me my PCs had windows 8.1 keys embedded in the BOIS and i just used Linux and got them out and reinstalled Windows 8.1 and dont have to worry with Windows 10 no more tell 2023,  maybe by 2020 when there is no more Windows 7 updates they well get Windows 10 stable so they can sell it to all the people wanting to buy.

"Only a few?" Ha. In my town, population about a couple of hundreds - three cases already. Come on, Avast.
