Twitter to Hide Troll Tweets

The company will use 'new behavioral signals' to identify the internet trolling and prevent it from intruding on your Twitter experience.

When it comes to bullies, should you engage or ignore? Twitter is choosing door No. 2. It announced today that it will stop troll tweets from popping up at the top of your conversations and searches using "new behavioral signals" to pinpoint the offensive messages.

According to a company spokeswoman, the approach will rely on machine learning, and the goal is to stop the trolling before people need to report it. "The result is that people contributing to the healthy conversation will be more visible in conversations and search," Twitter said in a blog post.

Twitter is using "many" behavioral signals to identify trolls, like "if an account has not confirmed their email address, if the same person signs up for multiple accounts simultaneously, accounts that repeatedly Tweet and mention accounts that don't follow them, or behavior that might indicate a coordinated attack," the company said.

"We're also looking at how accounts are connected to those that violate our rules and how they interact with each other," Twitter added.

Critics were quick to pounce on the policy with concerns that it will unfairly censor users. But a Twitter spokeswoman said the company is looking at behaviors, not what content is tweeted.

Twitter will not shut down accounts, just make them harder to spot. "Because this content doesn't violate our policies, it will remain on Twitter, and will be available if you click on 'Show more replies' or choose to see everything in your search setting," Twitter said.

Still, the new system won't be perfect; Twitter expects mistakes will be made, such as "false positives" with its detection methods. Nevertheless, the company remains upbeat about the troll-fighting tactic.

"We've already seen this new approach have a positive impact, resulting in a 4 percent percent drop in abuse reports from search and 8 percent fewer abuse reports from conversations," it said. "That means fewer people are seeing Tweets that disrupt their experience on Twitter."

Twitter has long faced criticism for failing to stop abuse over its platform, including sexual harassment and racism. In March, CEO Jack Dorsey said he wants to improve the micro-blogging service by enabling more healthy debate and critical thinking.

That push led Twitter to tackle non-comedic trolling, which can "distort and detract" public conversation over the platform. "While still a small overall number, these [troll] accounts have a disproportionately large—and negative—impact on people's experience on Twitter," the company added.

As long as it's done to keep bad accounts away, it's fine, but I hope they do not abuse it.

This is a much bigger troll site than Twitter ever was and it still exist .   People will just move off to  other platforms . This use to be a very bad problem on warez blogs back a few years ago , so most of them closed  the comments because there game for anti piracy  trolls and people with no life  and the ones that are left , witch are very few that alow it anymore i never  comment  there,  i just get my release and move on . It's still a bad problem at some other social media sites.  blogs and some forums so  this is just icing on the cake . :P

2018 the end of freedom of speech  on the billion dollar websites that mine you're data, there really doing you a favor now maybe you will find something constructive to do with you're life  besides being a keyboard warrior because if you said that kind of stuff to peoples face you get punched in the nose .
