Some of the most popular music videos on YouTube have been taken over by hackers, including the record-breaking Spanish-language music video Despacito, after accounts for streaming site Vevo were hacked.

Hackers took over a number of channels associated with Vevo, the video hosting service, changing the names of the videos and replacing them with figures in masks wielding machine guns.

The video for Despacito, on the Vevo channel for Puerto Rican pop star Luis Fonsi, was briefly deleted, having previously amassed more than 5bn views, the most of any YouTube video.

The hackers left text on the videos reading "free Palestine" and changed the video names to "hacked by" followed by a list of aliases of known hackers.

Since the attack, Vevo's videos have been restored by YouTube. A YouTube spokesman said: “After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue.”

Vevo said it was working to restore its videos and it would investigate the source of the breach.

The Hacker News reported that the one of the attackers, going by the alias Kuroi'SH had also claimed to have attacked Twitter accounts for BBC Arabic and viral news site NowThis.

This is not the first time Vevo has been hacked. Last year, Gizmodo reported roughly 3 terrabytes of internal data from Vevo was splashed online by hacking group OurMine. Vevo is joint owned by several music labels including Universal and Sony.

Despacito became a hit last summer, breaking records for the most watched YouTube video of all time. The hack comes a few days after Despacito became the first YouTube video to reach more than 5bn views. The videos have since been restored to the site following the hack. Other music videos for artists including Shakira, Taylor Swift and Drake were also hit.

On several of the hacked videos attackers left a pro-Palestinian messages. The cyber attack came as anti-Israel demonstrations in Gaza continue. An Twitter account claiming to be Kuroi'SH has Tweeted out a host of supposedly compromised accounts. Kuroi'SH tweeted: "Hacked @YouTube @shakira @postmalone +more @YouTube @SusanWojcicki I'm already in your account too."
