Windows 10 build 17627 now available for Skip Ahead Insiders - here's what's new

Microsoft released a new Windows 10 Insider Preview build to users that chose to 'Skip Ahead' today. Build 17627 replaces build 17623 in the subset of the Fast ring, and that was only released five days ago.

 

As with all of the latest Skip Ahead builds, this one is from the Redstone 5 development branch. That means that it's a preview of the next feature update to Windows 10, after the Redstone 4 update that should be out next month. So far, the biggest new feature we've seen is Sets, which allows you to group apps into sets of tabs, similar to webpages in a browser.

 

Today's build doesn't contain any new front-facing features. There are, however, some changes, fixes, and improvements:

• We fixed an issue where If you try to open a file that is available online-only from OneDrive that hasn’t been previously downloaded to your PC (marked with a green checkmark in File Explorer), your PC could bugcheck (GSOD).

• We fixed an issue resulting in the Emoji Panel not working in the last two flights.

• When a process in Task Manager is suspended, or has suspended child processes, you’ll now see an icon indicating as much in the Status column of the Processes tab.

 

And as always, there are a few known issues to be aware of:

• If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender.

• When opening .html or .pdf files from the local system (double-click, right-click > open), Microsoft Edge will not render the loaded content if Microsoft Edge wasn’t already running before opening the file. To work around the issue, you can open the file again without closing Microsoft Edge.

• On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected.

 

Obviously, there will be a lot more news about Redstone 5 as time progresses. The update isn't due to be finalized until September, so we'll probably learn more about it at Microsoft's Build conference in May. We'll be there, so make sure to check back in for more news.
