Contaminated acai berry causes serious illness
Contaminated acai can cause illness. According to a report from the Tropical Medicine Foundation in Manaus, he reports that twenty-five people were infected with Chagas disease after drinking açaí juice in Coari, 367 kilometers from Manaus.

Probably, according to the advisory, an infected Barbeiro Bug fell on the açaí beating machine while the drink was being prepared or the fruits may not have been washed, being dirty with feces from the Barbeiro Beast transmitting the disease.

Contaminated Acai Causes Chagas Disease

Acai requires increased hygiene for its preparation
This report scares because even an apparent innocent açaí juice can contaminate with a potentially serious disease like Chagas disease.

The oral contamination of Chagas disease is not new, the first outbreak of human infection by Trypanosoma cruzi orally was reported in 1968 in an agricultural school in the city of Estrela, RS, where 17 students presented an acute Chagas disease and six died. The exact source of contamination has not been clarified, suspected of being some contaminated food. Another similar outbreak occurred later in Catolé do Rocha (PB), reaching 26 people, with one death.

The case that most drew media attention to the problem occurred in Santa Catarina in March 2005. In this case an outbreak of acute Chagas disease reached 25 people, resulting in three deaths. Here the contamination occurred not by the juice of açaí, but rather after the ingestion of sugarcane juice contaminated with feces of a Barbeiro Bug infected by Trypanosoma cruzi.

A simple analysis of the cases reported above shows that the problem is not the cane juice or the açaí juice, but rather the way in which they are prepared. In all cases if the food had been properly washed before preparation many lives would have been saved.

And you, will you continue to drink acai juice without any fear?
