Here the contamination occurred not by the juice of açaí, but rather after the ingestion of sugarcane juice contaminated with feces of a Barbeiro Bug infected by Trypanosoma cruzi.

A simple analysis of the cases reported above shows that the problem is not the cane juice or the açaí juice, but rather the way in which they are prepared. In all cases if the food had been properly washed before preparation many lives would have been saved.
